Patrimoni Italiani nel Mondo

Prendiamo esempio dall’UNESCO e istituiamo una forma di premio di “Patrimonio Italiano nel Mondo”, fare conoscere in Italia i gruppi, gli individui, i luoghi e tutte le realtà che hanno formato le nostre comunità all’estero.

Nel nostro ultimo articolo (https://thedailycases.com/parlamentari-dallestero-si-o-no-anzi-no-parliamentarians-from-overseas-yes-or-no-rather-no/) abbiamo parlato delle nostre comunità nel mondo, come anche del ruolo di rappresentanza, sia dei parlamentari votati all’estero che del ruolo e selezione del CGIE e i Comites.

Benché avessimo parlato anche delle differenze tra le comunità italiane in Europa e quelle sparse in tutti i continenti, abbiamo detto, e vogliamo sottolinearlo di nuovo, che queste comunità non sono composte solo dai cittadini italiani che votano i parlamentari, ma dai figli della prima generazione dei nostri emigrati e anche dai discendenti che possono o non possono avere cittadinanza italiana, ma che sono, in ogni caso, di discendenza italiana e che hanno vissuto, in modi diversi, molti aspetti delle nostre tradizioni e usanze.

In tutti i casi, la nostra Cultura e le nostre usanze hanno svolto un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo di queste comunità. Inoltre, in tutte queste comunità esistono individui e gruppi, nonché anche luoghi e “istituzioni” italiane, che hanno svolto, e continuano a svolgere, ruoli importanti per promuovere la nostra lingua e Cultura, come anche ogni altra manifestazione del loro paese d’origine, siano industriali, commerciali, sportivi e di ogni genere.

Perciò, come giornale che ha lo scopo di far conoscere in Italia le realtà dei nostri parenti e amici all’estero, come anche di promuovere ogni aspetto del nostro paese e Cultura all’estero, desideriamo fare una proposta seria, mirata finalmente a fare capire nel Bel Paese le imprese compiute dai nostri emigrati e i loro discendenti in giro per il mondo.

Little Italy

In questi giorni il consiglio comunale dell’Inner West di Sydney in Australia ha deciso di nominare ufficialmente una parte del sobborgo di Leichhardt come “Little Italy” perché, per decenni, è stato il centro delle attività dei nostri amici e parenti in quella città lontana. Questo onore è il riconoscimento ufficiale di una realtà importante della Storia del Comune e la città e non solo della sua comunità italiana.

Sappiamo tutti, e ne abbiamo visto prova nel film capolavoro di Francis Ford Coppola “Il Padrino 2”, dell’esistenza di una di queste “Little Italy” a New York. Ma non esistono solo in quelle due città. Ci sono “Little Italy” sparse per tutto il mondo e hanno svolto un ruolo fondamentale nell’aiutare i nostri parenti e amici all’estero a stabilirsi nei loro nuovi paesi di residenza.

Tristemente, anzi tragicamente, stiamo dimenticando questi episodi man mano che i nostri concittadini in quei luoghi si trasferiscono in altre zone grazie ai frutti dei loro lavori nel corso degli anni.

Altri esempi

In questi centri di Cultura italiana, anche se non “alta” come vorrebbero alcuni addetti ai lavori della promozione della nostra Cultura, c’erano non solo i soliti negozi, generi alimentari e macellerie, ma anche edicole che vendevano giornali e riviste italiane, a volte settimane dopo l’uscita in Italia perché allora arrivavano via nave. C’erano i cinema e negozi che vendevano dischi, e poi sono arrivate le video cassette e DVD di musica e film italiani quando eventualmente i cinema erano chiusi.

Queste comunità italiane avevano anche i loro giornali in lingua italiana che davano notizie più “fresche” dall’Italia e anche gli avvisi dei circoli italiani e i gruppi che davano assistenza a chi ne aveva bisogno, e infine annunciavano fidanzamenti, matrimoni, battesimi, nascite e decessi dei componenti della comunità. Ora questi giornali devono accogliere la sfida dell’internet e delle nuove generazioni che non conoscono la lingua dei genitori e i nonni.

Da queste comunità sono usciti manovali e scienziati, insegnanti e grandi sportivi, commesse e avvocatesse, architetti e muratori, e tutte le professioni che possiamo immaginare come prove del contributo di questi centri italiani all’estero nei loro nuovi paesi.

Purtroppo, e non possiamo in tutta onestà non ammetterlo, abbiamo anche dato altri contributi molto meno onorabili, con quelle cosche e gruppi che ci hanno seguito e perseguitato dall’Italia e all’estero fino a darci quella nomina di “mafiosi”, che la grande maggioranza di noi non meritiamo di sentire.

Ma non vogliamo parlare di questa onta sulle nostre comunità, ma di tutto quello di queste comunità citato sopra.

E quanto si sa di queste realtà, un vero nostro orgoglio nel mondo, in Italia? Fuori dei luoghi comuni e gli stereotipi e le immagini di qualche film o fiction televisiva, non ne sappiamo quasi niente. E certamente non sappiamo niente delle differenze tra città e citta in ogni paese, tantomeno le differenze tra paese e paese, senza dimenticare tra continente e continente.

Allora cosa dobbiamo fare per far conoscere queste grandi imprese nel Bel Paese e non semplicemente onorare qualche individuo all’estero per il suo contributo personale?

Prendiamo esempio dall’UNESCO e istituiamo una forma di premio di “Patrimonio Italiano nel Mondo”, fare conoscere in Italia i gruppi, gli individui, i luoghi e tutte le realtà che hanno formato le nostre comunità all’estero.

Riconosciamo finalmente i pionieri, gli insegnanti della nostra lingua, luoghi come i vari “Little Italy”, i cinema, i giornali, ora le stazioni radio e televisive, ecc., ecc., che hanno promosso la nostra Cultura e hanno anche formato Culture nuove mettendo insieme il meglio dell’Italia, con il meglio dei loro nuovi paesi di residenza.

Non sarà facile, e rischiamo di ripetere gli sbagli di onorificenze come detto nell’ultimo articolo, ma mettiamo giù le basi solide per raccogliere queste storie e di riconoscere nel modo giusto tutti coloro che hanno dato onore alle loro origini italiane.

Ma non facciamo lo sbaglio che facciamo fin troppo spesso, di utilizzare solo eventuali guadagni come metro di giudizio. Gli insegnanti, per esempio, non fanno soldi, ma il loro ruolo è determinante per il futuro dei loro studenti e per promuovere lingua e Cultura.

Riconosciamo chi merita d’essere ricordato e onorato, paese per paese, generazione per generazione con riconoscimenti degni delle loro imprese. Ogni anno potremmo fare una cerimonia nazionale a Roma, con il riconoscimento da parte del Parlamento e del Quirinale, a gruppi e individui che hanno compiuto imprese particolarmente meritevoli, magari con copertura televisiva live.

Mentre scriviamo queste parole ci rendiamo conto che non sarà facile, ma sappiamo anche non è giusto che chi ha lavorato per promuovere e diffondere la nostra Cultura all’estero, chi è nato all’estero da genitori o nonni italiani, e ha svolto un lavoro importante in seno alle comunità locali, non sia riconosciuto a livello ufficiale (particolarmente se non di prima generazione come di solito è il caso).

Facciamo sapere in Italia che abbiamo davvero Patrimoni Italiani nel Mondo di cui dobbiamo essere orgogliosi, perché sono anche loro la faccia della migliore Italia e non di quello che, tristemente, vediamo troppo spesso nelle cronache.

E riconosciamo una volta per sempre che chi lascia il paese continua a svolgere ruoli importanti per il paese. Anzi, molti di loro iniziano le loro imprese partendo proprio dalla nostra Cultura e le nostre tradizioni.

Riconoscendoli in questo modo sarebbe un passo importante per capire che chi ha lasciato il paese non è “fuggito” come alcuni pensano maliziosamente, ma ha continuato ad amare il suo paese d’origine nel miglior modo possibile, con le proprie imprese.

Italian World Heritage

Let us take an example from the UNESCO and set up a form of “Italian World Heritage” prizes to make these groups, individuals, places and all the realities that formed our communities in the world known in Italy.

In our previous article (https://thedailycases.com/parlamentari-dallestero-si-o-no-anzi-no-parliamentarians-from-overseas-yes-or-no-rather-no/) we spoke of our communities around the world, as well as the role of representation by both the parliamentarians elected overseas and the role and selection of the CGIE and the Comites.

Although we also spoke about the differences between the Italian communities in Europe and those spread around all the continents we said, and we want to highlight once more, that these communities are not made up only of the Italian citizens who vote for the parliamentarians but by the children of the first generation of our migrants and also by their descendants who may or may not have Italian citizenship, but who are in any case of Italian descent and who lived, in varying degrees, many aspects of our traditions and habits.

In all these cases, our Culture and our habits have played an essential role in the development of these communities. Furthermore, in all these communities there are individuals and groups, as well as places and Italian “institutions” that have carried out, and continue to carry out, important roles for promoting our language and Culture, as well as every other manifestation of their country of origin, whether industrial commercial, sporting and every type.

Hence, as a site that has the aim to introduce Italy to the realities of our relatives and friends overseas, as well as promoting every aspect of our country and Culture overseas, we wish to make a serious proposal aimed at finally letting Italy know the deeds carried out by our migrants and their descendants around the world.

Little Italys

In recent days the Local council of Sydney’s Inner West in Australia decided to officially name a part of the suburb of Leichhardt as “Little Italy” because for decades it was the centre of the activities of our relatives and friends in that far away city. This honour is the official recognition of an important reality of the Council’s history and not only that of its Italian community.

We all know, and we saw proof of this in Francis Ford Coppola’s Masterpiece, the film “The Godfather 2”, of the “Little Italy” in New York. But they do not exist only in these two cities. There are “Little Italys” spread around the world and they played a fundamental role in helping our relatives and friends overseas to establish themselves in their new countries of residence.

Sadly, or rather tragically, we are slowly forgetting these episodes as our fellow countrymen in these places move to other areas thanks to the results of their work over the years.

Other examples

In these centres of Italian Culture, even if they are not “high” as the experts promoting our Culture would want, there are not only the usual shops, groceries and butchers, there were also stands that sold Italian newspapers and magazines, sometimes weeks after the release in Italy because they came from Italy by boat. There were cinemas and shops that sold records and then came the video cassettes and DVDs of Italian music and films when the cinemas eventually closed down

These Italian communities also had their Italian language newspapers that gave “fresher” news from Italy and also the announcements of engagements, weddings, baptisms and the passing of the members of the community. Now these newspapers must meet the challenge of the internet and the new generations that do not know the language of their parents and grandparents.

Out of these communities have come labourers and scientists, teachers and great sportsmen, shop assistants and lawyers, architects and bricklayers, and all the professions we can imagine as proof of the contribution of these Italian centres overseas to their new countries.

Unfortunately, and we cannot in all honesty not admit it, we have also given other much less honourable contributions with those gangs and groups that have followed and persecuted us in Italy and overseas to the point that we have the reputation of “mafiosi” that the great majority of us does not deserve to hear.

But we do not want to talk about this shame on our communities, but of everything about these communities that we mentioned above.

And how much is known in Italy about these realities, our true pride around the world? Besides the clichés and stereotypes and the images from a few films or TV programmes we know almost nothing about them. And we certainly know nothing about the differences from city to city in any country, let alone the differences from country to country, without forgetting from continent to continent.

So, what do we have to do to make these great deeds known in Italy and not simply to honour a few individuals overseas for his or her personal contribution?

Honour

Let us take an example from the UNESCO and set up a form of “Italian World Heritage” prizes to make these groups, individuals, places and all the realities that formed our communities in the world known in Italy.

Let us finally recognise the pioneers, the teachers of our language, places such as the various “Little Italys”, the cinemas, the newspapers, now the radio and television station, etc., etc. that have promoted our Culture and have also formed new Cultures by putting together the best of Italy with the best of their new countries of origin.

It will not be easy and we risk repeating the mistakes of honours we mentioned in the previous article, but let us set the foundations for collecting these stories and to recognize in the right way all those who have given honour to their Italian origins.

But let us not make the mistake that we make all too often of using only any making money as the yardstick. Teachers for example do not make much money but their role is decisive for the future of their students and to promote our language and Culture.

Let us recognize those who deserve to be remembered and honoured, country by country, generation by generation with awards worthy of their deeds. Every year we could hold a national ceremony in Rome with the recognition by Italy’s Parliament and the President of the Republic to the groups and individuals who have performed especially noteworthy deeds, maybe with live television coverage.

As we type these words we realize that it will not be easy but we also know that it is not right that those who have worked to promote and spread our Culture overseas, whose who were born overseas of Italian parents or grandparents and carried out major work in the local communities is not recognized officially (especially if they are not of the first generation as is usually the case).,

Let us make Italy know that we have true Italian World Heritage that should make us proud because they too are the face of the best of Italy and not the one that we sadly see too often in the newspapers.

And let us recognize once and for all that those who left Italy continue to play important roles for the country. Rather, the opposite is the case because many of then began their deeds starting from our very Culture and tradition.

Recognizing them in this way would be an important step towards understanding that those who left the country did not “runaway” as some maliciously think, but continue to love his or her country of origin in the best way possible, with their deeds.
