Great Ocean Road

The Hero, the adventure of 3 Australians and an Italian to discover Australia by bike.

Exclusively and by courtesy of our Paolo Buralli Manfredi, our newspaper will follow the bike journey of four adventurous cyclists who decided to travel by bike from Melbourne to Adelaide in Australia along stretches of road with breathtaking views starting with the Great Ocean Road. Paolo, John, Peter and Ross are the protagonists of this adventure which will allow us to know and admire some of the most fascinating sites of the southern continent.

First stage 7/04/2021

Paolo Buralli Manfredi

Here we are, we have arrived in the beautiful guest house in Apollo Bay. In the first stage we travelled 139km on the ancient Great Ocean Road, with a breathtaking view. As you can see from some of the short videos Australia’s natural beauty is among the most beautiful in the world.

Despite John having told us the reason the road was built, below I will spend a few words on this monument dedicated to soldiers who died in war.

Great Ocean Road

This stretch of road runs the 243 kilometres of the south-east coast between the towns of Torquay and Allansford in the state of Victoria which is even classified as “Australian national heritage”

It was built between 1919 and 1932 by returned soldiers of the First World War, the intention was to dedicate it to all the fallen in war and this is why the Great Ocean Road is the world’s biggest war memorial!

On this road you can also admire the “12 Apostles”, a series of limestone stacks which, in reality, are 11 today since one of them collapsed into the waters. Almost all the road stretches the south-east cliffs and offers breathtaking and unforgettable views.

Tomorrow we will leave Apollo Bay and climb up to 900/100 metres to arrive in Port Campbell, about 200 km from Apollo Bay.
