La Tigre di Cremona

Come il suo grande amico e poi collega di imprese musicali, Adriano Celentano, il soggetto del primo articolo di questa trilogia, la voce di Mina ha accompagnato la vita degli italiani per generazioni

Prima Parte: (Dal Beat al Cinema e la Televisione: Adriano Celentano – From Beat to the Movies and TV: Adriano Celentano)

Nel 1958 al celebre locale “La Bussola” una ragazza di 18 in vacanza a Forte dei Marmi accetta la sfida di alcuni suoi amici di salire sul palco per cantare una canzone. La ragazza, bella e normalmente timida, si diverte così tanto che ripete l’impresa per diverse sere tanto da costringere il proprietario a contenere il suo entusiasmo. In quelle sere d’estate il pubblico del locale ha visto la nascita di una delle vere leggende della musica “leggera” italiana, Anna Maria Mazzini, in arte Mina.  

Al ritorno a Cremona dove viveva la famiglia, Mina si è presentata a un gruppo rock popolare della città chiamato gli “Happy Boys” che ha segnato il vero inizio di una carriera brillante e tempestuosa. Da quel giorno la ragazza nata a Busto Arsizio(VA) il 25 marzo 1940 in una famiglia benestante e che aveva studiato dalle suore, ha iniziato il percorso che nello spazio di pochissimi anni l’ha portata in testa alle classifiche delle vendite dei dischi che non lascerà mai nei decenni da allora.

Come il suo grande amico e poi collega di imprese musicali, Adriano Celentano, il soggetto del primo articolo di questa trilogia, la voce di Mina non solo ha accompagnato la vita degli italiani per generazioni, ma ha interpretato la musica dei più grandi cantautori e parolieri della categoria della Cultura italiana con un nome ingannevole, la musica “leggera”.

Primi successi

Nel 1960 Mina ha avuto il primo grande successo con un brano ancora suonato regolarmente in Italia “Tintarella di luna” che le ha aperto le porte al Festival della Canzone Italiana di San Remo. Purtroppo, quell’apparizione e quella dopo non hanno avuto successo, tanto da farle decidere di non partecipare più alla manifestazione più importante della musica italiana. Ma questo non ha fatto alcun male alla sua carriera perché era già stata notata da altri grandi personaggi della musica italiana.

Fino a quel punto lei era considerata come una dei cantanti chiamati “urlatori” per via del loro stile, però due personaggi avevano capito il potenziale della sua voce straordinaria. Il cantautore Gino Paoli e il grandissimo Giulio Rapetti, il paroliere italiano  più importante con il nome d’arte Mogol, le hanno offerto un loro brano. All’inizio Mina non si sentiva di cantarlo, ma, dopo le insistenze anche della sua casa discografica, lei ha deciso di incidere il suo primo capolavoro, “Il cielo in una stanza”.

Questa canzone è stato il successo più grande di quell’anno in Italia e senza dubbio uno dei pezzi più identificanti di quella che già chiamavano la “Tigre di Cremona”, perché ha messo in risalto aspetti della sua voce inesplorati fino ad allora. Con questo successo il suo futuro era già assicurato, anche se ci sarebbero stati poi episodi che avrebbero potuto metterla a rischio nel futuro.

Altri successi

Da quel punto in poi la carriera di Mina è stata sempre in crescita e la sua popolarità era tale che nel 1962 era una stella di uno dei programmi televisivi più popolari del paese, Studio Uno del leggendario regista televisivo Antonio Falqui. Al suo fianco c’erano molti altri cantanti e complessi popolari e artisti dell’epoca come il Quartetto  Cetra, Don Lurio e la Sorelle Kessler.

Aveva già avuto successo all’estero con concerti e dischi in paesi come la Spagna, la Germania, l’Austria e persino successo in Sud America e Giappone che hanno assicurato la sua immagine in quei paesi.  In quei programmi televisivi non solo ha dimostrato tutto il suo talento canoro, ma ha potuto mettere in mostra altre capacità nel fare divertire il pubblico televisivo accompagnando i grandi attori e comici di quegli anni, come Marcello Mastroianni e Totò.

Purtroppo, benché la sua vita professionale di quegli anni fosse sempre ricca di successi, sia della vendita dischi che televisivi, la vita privata di Mina ha messo a rischio la sua carriera.

“Quarantena” e tragedia

Nel 1962 ha iniziato una storia d’amore con l’attore Corrado Pani. In un paese fortemente cattolico dove la parola “divorzio” era un concetto quasi straniero permesso solo a chi poteva pagare i costi altissimi per far annullare il matrimonio dalla Sacra Rota, questa storia con un uomo sposato ha attirato l’ira dei dirigenti della RAI.

Nell’aprile del 1963 la nascita del loro figlio Massimiliano ha portato alla decisione di metterla in “quarantena” per un anno. Era anche bersagliata da una parte bigotta della stampa, ma il suo pubblico, forse anche un sentore del referendum che sancì la legge sul divorzio in Italia nel 1971, non ha mai smesso di comprare i suoi dischi.

Mina ha continuato a incidere dischi e ad esibirsi per il suo pubblico, sempre con grande successo. Con il tempo la RAI decise di farla rientrare nei suoi studi televisivi e nel 1965 Falqui riporta Mina a Studio Uno come presentatrice, dove è apparsa con i migliori personaggi dello spettacolo italiano, da divi televisivi e del cinema ai cantanti e comici più popolari del paese. Il paradosso è che oggigiorno la cantante dello “scandalo” è ancora vista regolarmente in RAI nei suoi programmi di rievocazione del passato, come “Techetechete”, il brillante programma estivo che prende il materiale dagli archivi RAI.

Anche se nel 1965 ha avuto il colpo durissimo della morte del fratello Alfredo in un incidente stradale, dopo lo chock enorme si rimette al lavoro.

Nel 1968 incide un brano “La voce del silenzio” dei suoi amici Paolo Limiti, Mogol ed Elio Isola. Questo brano è semplicemente stupendo, non solo per la voce unica di Mina, che lo canta come nessun altro, ma anche per via delle parole stupende che dimostrano tutta la bellezza della lingua italiana.

Destino crudele

Negli anni seguenti benché la sua carriera andasse a gonfie vele, la sua vita privata burrascosa ha dovuto subire effetti che potevano distruggere chiunque altro.

Un esaurimento nervoso l’ha costretta a rinunciare a un progetto insieme a Frank Sinatra che aveva espressamente chiesto di lavorare con lei. Nel 1973 suo marito Virgilio Crocco e padre della figlia Benedetta è deceduto negli Stati Uniti, come suo fratello anche lui in un incidente stradale. Malgrado tutti questi episodi, ed altri, Mina non ha mai lasciato il palco e la televisione. Però, anche questa parte della sua vita è destinata a finire.

Nel 1974 Mina ha presentato “Mille luci” con Raffaella Carrà. Il programma ebbe grande successo col pubblico, ma tristemente era destinato ad essere anche l’ultimo grande spettacolo della sua vita.

Chissà se l’avesse saputo prima, ma la sigla finale del programma era “Non gioco più” e alla fine delle trasmissioni suonò come una premonizione della sua decisione non solo di non andare più in televisione, ma anche di rinunciare ai concerti.

Svizzera e i dischi unici

Con la chiusura di questa fase della sua vita Mina si è trasferita in Svizzera da dove, ogni anno, incide un nuovo album ed ogni anno questi dischi hanno successo enorme con il pubblico che non ha mai smesso di amarla.

Questi album hanno anche un aspetto molto particolare. Le loro copertine sono vere opere d’arte curate da esperti di grafica e fotografi come Luciano Tallarini, Gianni Ronco e Mauro Balletti che farà tutto da solo dalla seconde metà degli anni ’80.

E questi album sono un’ulteriore prova che la sua voce non ha mai smesso di stupire come sentiamo nel terzo filmato, “Adesso è facile” del 2012, scritto da Manuel Agnelli.

L’ultimo suo album, e sempre di successo, è “Mina Fossati”, una collaborazione con un altro dei grandi cantautori italiani, Ivano Fossati, del novembre 2019. Di nuovo Mina dimostra che vuole lavorare con i migliori della musica “leggera” italiana.

Ma c’è una collaborazione musicale di Mina che dura oltre vent’anni che ha stabilito primati di vendite in Italia, quella con il suo amico Adriano Celentano, che sarà il tema della terza e ultima parte di questa trilogia di articoli di due dei personaggi più importanti della Cultura italiana moderna.

First part: (Dal Beat al Cinema e la Televisione: Adriano Celentano – From Beat to the Movies and TV: Adriano Celentano)

In 1958 an 18 year old girl on holiday in Forte dei Marmi accepted the challenge by some of her friends to climb onto the stage of the famous “La Bussola” night club to sing a song. The beautiful and normally shy girl enjoyed herself so much that she repeated the deed for a number of evenings, so much so that the owner was forced to contain her enthusiasm.  On those summer nights the club’s audience saw the birth of one of the true legends of Italian music, Anna Maria Mazzini, known as Mina.

On her return to Cremona where her family lived Mina introduced herself to a popular rock group in the city, the “Happy Boys” which was the real start of a brilliant and stormy career. From that day the girl born in Busto Arsizio (VA) on March 25, 1940 to a wealthy family and who had studied with the nuns began a path that in the space of a few years took her to the top of the charts in record sales which she would never leave in the decades since then.

Like her friend and then colleague in musical endeavours, Adriano Celentano, the subject of the first article of this trilogy, Mina’s voice not only accompanied the lives of Italians for generations but she also interpreted the music of the greatest cantautori (singer songwriters) and lyricists of the category of Italian Culture with a misleading name, “musica leggera” (“light”/pop music).

First hits

Mina had her first hit in 1960 with a song that is still played regularly in Italy, “Tintarella di luna”, which opened the doors to the San Remo Festival of Italian Song. Unfortunately, that appearance and the one after were unsuccessful which led to her decision to no longer take part in Italy’s most important music event. But this did no harm to her career because she had already been noticed by other great personalities of Italian music.

Up to that point she had been considered one of the singers called “urlatori” (screamers) due to their style, however two people had understood the potential of her extraordinary voice. The cantautore Gino Paoli and the great lyricist Giulio Rapetti, Italy’s most important lyricist known as Mogol, offered her one of their songs. At first Mina did not feel like singing it but after the insistence also of her record label she decided to record her first masterpiece, “Il cielo in una stanza” (The sky in a room).

The song was that year’s biggest hit in Italy and without a doubt one of the pieces most identified with she who was already being called the “Tigre di Cremona” (Tigress of Cremona) because it highlighted aspects of her voice that had been unexplored until then. With that hit her future was assured but there would then be episodes that could have put her future at risk.

Other hits

From that point on Mina’s career was always on the rise and her popularity was such that she was a star of one of the country’s most popular TV programmes, Studio Uno by the legendary television director Antonio Falqui. Beside her were many other popular singers, groups and artists of the times such as the Quartetto  Cetra, Don Lurio and the Kessler Twins.

She had already had hits overseas with concerts and records in countries such as Spain, Germany, Austria and even hits in South America and Japan which ensured her image overseas. But in these television programmes she not only showed all her talent in singing, she could also put on show other skills to entertain the television audience by accompanying great actors and comedians of the time such as Marcello Mastroianni and Totò.

Unfortunately, although her professional life in those years was full of success both with records and on television, Mina’s private life put her career at risk.

“Quarantine” and tragedy

In 1962 she began an affair with actor Corrado Pani. In a strongly Catholic country where the word “divorce” was almost a foreign concept allowed only to those who could afford the very high costs of annulling the marriage by the church’s Sacra Rota, this story with a married man attracted the ire of RAI’s executives.

In April 1963 the birth of their son Massimiliano led to the decision to put her into “quarantine” for a year. She was also targeted by a bigoted part of the Press but her public, possibly a hint of the referendum that would sanction divorce in Italy in 1971, never stopped buying her records.

Mina continued to record songs and to perform in public, always with great success. Over time RAI decided to let her return to its television studios and in 1965 Falqui brought her back to Studio Uno as a presenter where she appeared with the best personalities of Italian show business, from TV and movie stars to the country’s most popular singers and comedians. Today the paradox is that the singer of the “scandal” is still seen regularly on RAI in its programmes that recall the past such as “Techetechete”, the brilliant summer programme that takes its material from RAI’s archives.

She also had another bad body blow in 1965 with the death of her brother Alfredo in a road accident but after the huge shock she went back to work.

In 1968 she recorded the song “La voce del silenzio” (The voice of silence) by her friends Paolo Limiti, Mogol and Elio Isola. The song is simply stunning, not only due to Mina’s unique voice, which she sings like no other, but also because of the wonderful lyrics that show all the beauty of the Italian language.

Cruel Fate

Although her career was booming in the following years her stormy private life continued to have effects that could have destroyed other people.

A nervous breakdown forced her to pull out of a project with Frank Sinatra who expressly wanted to work with her. And in 1973 her husband Virgilio Crocco and father of her daughter Benedetta died in the United States, in a car accident like her brother.

Despite these episodes, and others, Mina never left the stage and television. However, this part of her life was also destined to end.

In 1974 Mina presented the TV programme “Mille luci” with Raffaella Carrà. The programme was very successful with the public but sadly it was also destined to be the last great show of her life.

Who knows if she knew beforehand but the programme’s closing song was “Non gioco più” (I’m not playing anymore) and at the end of the show a premonition of her decision not only to no longer go on television but also to give up concerts.

Switzerland and unique records

With the end of this stage of her life Mina moved to Switzerland where every year she has recorded a new album and every year these records have been huge hits with the public that never stopped loving her.

These albums also had a very particular aspect. The covers are also true works of art looked after by experts of graphics and photography such as Luciano Tallarini, Gianni Ronco and Mauro Balletti who would do it all on his own from the mid ‘80s.

And these albums are further proof that her voice never ceased to amaze as we hear in the third video, “Adesso è facile” (Now it’s easy, 2012) by Manuel Agnelli.

Her latest album, and a hit as always, was “Mina Fossati”, a collaboration with another of Italy’s great cantautori, Ivano Fossati, released in November 2019. Once again Mina proved that she wants to work with the best of Italy’s “musica leggera”.

But there is a musical collaboration by Mina that has lasted for more than twenty years which posted record sales in Italy, the one with her friend Adriano Celentano which will be the theme of the third and last part of this trilogy of articles on two of the most important people of modern Italian Culture.
