Mina e Celentano: il successo senza fine

Un semplice fatto conferma la grandezza e l’importanza di Adriano Celentano e Mina per la musica leggera italiana. In ordine sono primo e seconda nella classifica delle vendite dei dischi italiani in assoluto con oltre 150 milioni di dischi venduti ciascuno. La terza è Patty Pravo con 110 milioni seguita da Umberto Tozzi, Luciano Pavarotti ed I Pooh con circa 100 milioni di vendite. Altri cantanti italiani importanti come Vasco Rossi, Eros Ramazzotti, Zucchero, Renato Zero, Laura Pausini, Ligabue e Gianni Morandi che hanno avuto successi regolarmente, si assestano tra i 40 e 70 milioni di dischi venduti.

Visti i primi anni delle loro carriere che abbiamo trattato nei primi articoli di questa trilogia, era inevitabile che siano apparsi insieme nei programmi televisivi presentati da Mina come Studio Uno e Mille Luci. Infatti, queste apparizioni vengono riproposte durante “Techetechete”, il programma estivo della RAI che ogni anno presenta al pubblico moderno artisti, canzoni e sketch televisivi del passato per dimostrare l’enorme varietà di talento apparsa sulla televisione di Stato nel corso dei quasi settant’anni dalla sua nascita.

In parole povere, in questi decenni Mina e Celentano hanno avuto ruoli fondamentali nello sviluppo della musica italiana come pochi altri. Alcuni cantautori hanno dato voce ai sentimenti e temi sociali durante questi anni, come Lucio Dalla, Francesco Guccini, Ivano Fossati, Giorgio Gaber e in modo molto particolare Fabrizio de André, ma nessuno di loro ha avuto l’impatto con il pubblico così longevo quanto questa coppia d’oro.

Per questo motivo una notizia del 1998 ha avuto un effetto enorme sul pubblico italiano.

Album congiunto

La decisione di incidere un album insieme è stata senza dubbio la notizia più importante della musica leggera italiana di quell’anno. Con l’album “Mina Celentano” la coppia d’oro ha dimostrato d’essere sempre capace non solo di fare passi innovativi, ma di attirare l’attenzione del pubblico italiano in un modo straordinario.

Inoltre, sia in questa collaborazione che nei lavori che ne sono seguiti, hanno anche dimostrato un livello altissimo di autoironia, in modo particolare nel brano che chiuderà questo articolo. Difatti, già la copertina del primo album insieme, che li mostra come papere da cartoni animati, fa capire che l’album sarà molto divertente, a prescindere dal tipo di musica che contiene.

Naturalmente qualsiasi loro lavoro non poteva non riferirsi al loro passato e lo vediamo benissimo sotto nel video ufficiale del single, “Acqua e sale”, tratto dall’album.

Il filmato mostra l’apparizione di Mina censurata dalla RAI nel 1974 che ha portato alla sua decisione di non apparire più in pubblico (con l’eccezione di un’apparizione straordinaria, in ogni senso della parola, nel 1978 a “La Bussola” per un pubblico ristretto che si può vedere su YouTube), una scena del film “Il Bisbetico Domato” di Celentano e un loro duetto buffo, una parodia del grande successo di Mina “Parole, parole, parole” del 1972 con Alberto Lupo, durante una puntata di “Teatro 10” presentata da lei, dove si vede l’affiatamento naturale tra di loro.

Tale è stato il successo di questo album che è stato ripresentato in altre versioni nel corso degli anni che ne sono seguiti. Ovviamente un album di grandissimo successo non poteva che avere un seguito, ma il pubblico italiano ha dovuto aspettare 19 anni per sentirlo e vederne i filmati.

Le migliori

Il titolo del loro secondo album insieme, “Le Migliori”  nel  2017 fa capire che questa opera non sarebbe stata solo un album di inediti, ma contiene anche canzoni del loro passato, sia nella versione originale che nelle due nuove versioni, “Tutte le migliori”, pubblicata  l’anno dopo che ha presentato un secondo cd con brani inediti e classici del loro repertorio.

Nell’album c’è una versione nuova del brano innovativo del 1972 di Celentano, “Prisencolinensinainciusol” e nel filmato ufficiale girato nella celebre Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II di Milano, che si può vedere su YouTube, non vediamo Raffaella Carrà, bensì un ballerino classico molto popolare in Italia, Roberto Bolle.

E nel filmato ufficiale del brano sotto “Amami, amami” chi segue la musica leggera italiana da tanto tempo non può non riconoscere il pezzo suonato dal fisarmonicista che fa parte integrale della canzone “Storia d’amore” di Celentano del 1963.

Ma il filmato è affascinante anche per altri motivi, il primo è il modo nuovo di incorporare il testo nelle immagini, come anche l’appello a un pubblico non solo giovane, ma anche multiculturale. Inoltre, vediamo i cantanti in un modo impensabile all’inizio della loro carriera, sullo schermo di un cellulare.

Con l’uscita dell’album la stampa italiana è stata invasa da immagini dei due cantanti come vediamo nella foto in testa all’articolo, dove non si riconosce subito che le due donne a sinistra sono proprio Adriano Celentano che ovviamente si diverte nel ruolo. E questo deve farci capire un fatto non indifferente di questi due cantanti in quell’anno.

Nel 2017 Mina aveva 77 anni e Celentano 79, ed è davvero incredibile che non solo continuano a comportarsi in quel modo, ma che sono ancora capaci di cantare con la gioia della gioventù come si sente nei brani in questi album.

Omaggio

E questa capacità di divertirsi si sente chiaramente nella canzone e si vede ancora di più nel filmato ufficiale di un brano del primo album.

Il filmato di “Che t’aggia dì” è un cartono animato che fa omaggio a molti aspetti non solo della vita di Adriano Celentano e Mina, ma anche a un aspetto specifico del cinema italiano che è riconosciuto da tutto il mondo.

Il titolo della canzone ci da già un indizio del contenuto che viene confermato dalle immagini iniziali del villaggio dove le papere abitano. Benché Celentano fosse nato a Milano, la sua famiglia era di origine pugliese, cosa che viene rievocata perfettamente dal villaggio e confermata anche dalle parole in dialetto e gli accenti dei due cantanti.

Inoltre, la scena della stanza da letto è, allo stesso tempo, una parodia e un omaggio a una delle scene più famose tra la coppia d’oro del cinema italiano, Sophia Loren e Marcello Mastroianni, nel film “Ieri Oggi Domani” del 1962 del regista Vittorio de Sica che è indubbiamente una delle immagini più importanti dell’Italia del ventesimo secolo.

Come la prima collaborazione, questo album ha avuto più versioni e in tutti questi casi le vendite sono state altissime e già questo poteva far pensare che fosse un epilogo degno dei loro lavori, ma non è stato così.

Primato

In questo periodo il pubblico italiano aspetto l’uscita del nuovo album di Mina “Italian Songbook”  che sarà la prima parte di un’antologia importante. Si aspettano con molto interesse due brani inediti di lei di cantautori classici, ”Tempo piccolo” di  Franco Califano e “Nel cielo dei bars” di Fred Buscaglione.

E non abbiamo dubbio che anche Adriano Celentano è al lavoro per un nuovo album e sarà interessante vedere che sorprese ci farà nel futuro.

E nel parlare di questo nuovo album di Mina dobbiamo ricordarci che lei e Celentano hanno avuto i loro primi grandi successi nel 1960, cioè questo album segna la fine del sesto decennio di successi della cantante.

Una settimana fa in Inghilterra la cantante australiana Kylie Minogue ha stabilito il primato britannico di successi in cinque decenni e Mina sta per entrare nel settimo decennio, come anche Celentano con il prossimo album. Abbiamo pochi dubbi che il primato di questa coppia d’oro sarà difficile, se non impossibile, da battere.

La loro vita meriterebbe molto più di questi tre articoli e ci auguriamo d’aver dato ai nostri lettori internazionali un’idea dell’importanza della loro vita per l’Italia, ma vogliamo finire questa breve sintesi delle vite di Mina e Adriano Celentano con una riflessione.

Quando in Italia parliamo di “Cultura” abbiamo fin troppo spesso il vizio di pensare solo alla cosiddetta “Alta Cultura” e quindi quando trattiamo la musica pensiamo alla lirica e la musica sinfonica, chiamata anche “classica”.

Ma quando vediamo l’impatto di personaggi come Mina e Celentano, e aggiungiamo anche altri come Fabrizio de André, Domenico Modugno e Renato Carosone, per nominarne solo tre, come possiamo fare finta che anche la musica leggera non faccia parte della nostra Cultura?

La risposta è semplice, fa parte del nostro Patrimonio Culturale nazionale e per questo motivo dobbiamo finalmente riconoscere l’importanza della musica leggere nella vita degli italiani, perché senza i cantanti nominati in questa trilogia di articoli la nostra esistenza negli ultimi decenni sarebbe stata molto più povera, in ogni senso.

One simple fact confirms the greatness and importance of Adriano Celentano and Mina for Italian light/pop music. They are, in order, first and second in the charts of Italian all time record sales in absolute terms with more than 150 million records sold by each. Third is Patty Pravo with 110 million followed by Umberto Tozzi, Luciano Pavarotti and I Pooh with about 100 million sales. Other major Italian singers such as Vasco Rossi, Eros Ramazotti, Zucchero, Renato Zero, Laura Pausini, Ligabue and Gianni Morandi who have hits regularly have from 40 to 70 million records sold. 

Considering the early years of their careers that we dealt with in the first articles of this trilogy it was inevitable that they appeared together in TV programmes presented by Mina such as “Studio Uno “and “Mille Luci”. Indeed, these appearances are presented regularly every year during “Techetechete”, RAI’s summer TV programme that each year presents to today’s audience artists, songs and TV sketches from the past to show the huge variety of talent that has appeared on the State TV over the nearly seventy years since its creation.

In other words, Mina and Celentano during these decades have played a fundamental role in the development of Italian music like few others. Some cantautori (singer songwriters) such as Lucio Dalla, Francesco Guccini, Ivano Fossati, Giorgio Gaber and in a very particular way Fabrizio de André have given voice to feelings and issues during these years but none of them have had the impact with the public and as long-lived as this golden couple.

For this reason a news item in 1998 had a huge effect on Italy’s public.

Joint Album

The decision to record an album together was without a doubt the major news of Italy’s light/pop music in that year. With the album “Mina Celentano” the golden couple showed that it is always capable of not only taking innovative steps but also of attracting the attention of the Italian public in an extraordinary way.

Furthermore, in both this collaboration and in the works that followed, they also showed a very high level of self-irony, especially in the song that will close this article. In fact, the cover of the first album together that shows them as ducks from a cartoon already makes us understand that the album will be entertaining, regardless of the types of music it would contain.

Of course, any of their work could not fail to refer to their past and we see this very well below in the official video of the single “Acqua e sale” (Water and salt) taken from the album.

The video shows the appearance by Mina censored by RAI in 1973 that led to her decision to no longer appear in public (with the exception of an extraordinary, in every sense of the word, appearance in 1978 at the “La Bussola” night club in front of a limited audience which can be seen on YouTube), a scene from the film “Il Bisbetico Domato” (The Taming of the Scoundrel) with Celentano and their funny duet, a parody of Mina’s big hit with “Parole, parole, parole” (Words, words, words) with Alberto Lupo, during an episode of “Teatro 10” presented by her in which the natural harmony between them can be seen.

Such was the success of this album that it was presented in other versions over the years that followed. Obviously a highly successful album had to have a sequel but the Italian public had to wait 19 years to hear it and to see the videos.

The best ones

The title of their second album together, “Le Migliori” (The best ones), lets us understand that this work would not be an album made up of only unreleased songs but also of songs from their past, in both the original version and the two new versions of the album, “Tutte le migliori” (All the best ones), released a year later that presented a two and four CDs with unreleased tracks and classic songs from their repertoire.

The albums contain a new version of Celentano’s 1972 innovative song “Prisencolinensinainciusol” and in the official video filmed in Milan’s famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery, that can be seen on YouTube, we do not see Raffaella Carrà but Roberto Bolle, a classical ballet dancer who is very popular in Italy.

And in the official video below of the song “Amami, Amami” (Love me, love me) anybody who has followed Italian light/pop music for a long time would not fail to recognize the piece of music played by the accordionist which is an essential part of Celentano’s 1963 hit “Storia d’amore” (Love story).

But the video is also fascinating for other reasons; the first is the way of incorporating the lyrics into the images, as well as the appeal to an audience that is not only very young but also multicultural. In addition, we see the singers only in a way that would have been unthinkable at the start of their careers, on the screen of a mobile phone.

With the release of the album Italy’s Press was invaded by images of the two singers as we see them in the photo at the head of the article where we cannot immediately recognize that the two women at the left is really Adriano Celentano who obviously enjoyed himself in the role. And this must make us understand a not unimportant fact about the two singers in that year.

In 2017 Mina was 77 years old and Celentano 79 and it is truly incredible that not only do they continue to behave that way but that they are still capable of singing with joy of their youth as can be heard in the songs on these albums.

Tribute

And this ability to have fun is clearly heard in a song from the first album and can be seen even more in the official video.

The video of “Che t’aggia dì” (What do I have to tell you) is a cartoon that is a tribute not only to many aspects of Adriano Celentano’s life but also to a specific aspect of Italian cinema that is recognized around the world.

The title of the song already gives us a hint of the content which is confirmed by the initial images of the village where the ducks live. Although Celentano was born in Milan his family came from Puglia and this is perfectly evoked by the village and also confirmed by the words in dialect and the accents of the two singers.

Furthermore, the bedroom scene is, at the same time, a parody and a tribute to one of the most famous scenes of the golden couple of Italian cinema, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, in the film “Ieri Oggi Domani” (Yesterday, today and tomorrow, 1962) by director Vittorio de Sica which is undoubtedly one of the most important images of 20th century Italy.

Like the first collaboration, this album has a number of versions and in all these cases the sales were very high and this could already suggest that it was an epilogue worthy of their work but this is not at all the case.

Record

The Italian public is currently waiting for the release of Mina’s new album, “Italian Songbook”, which will be the first part of a major anthology. Two songs previously not sung by her by two classic cantautori”, Tempo piccolo” (Small time) by Franco Califano and “Nel cielo dei bars” (In the sky of the bars) by Fred Buscaglione are awaited with great interest.

And we have no doubt that Adriano Celentano is also at work on a new album and it will be interesting to see what surprises he will bring us in the future.

And in talking about Mina’s new album we must remember that she and Celentano had their first big hits in 1960, in other words, this album marks the end of the singers’ sixth decade of hits.

A week ago in England the Australian singer Kylie Minogue set a British record for hits in five consecutive decades and Mina is about to enter onto her seventh decade, like Celentano with his next album. We have little doubt that this pair’s golden coupe’s record will be difficult, if not impossible, to beat.

Their lives would deserve much more than these three articles and we hope that we have given our international readers an idea of the importance of their lives to Italy but we want to finish this short summary of the lives of Mina and Adriano Celentano with a reflection.

All too often in Italy when we talk about “Culture” we have the bad habit of thinking only of “High Culture” and therefore when we deal with music we think about Opera and symphonic music, also called “classical music”.

But when we see the impact of people such as Mona and Celentano, and we also add others such as Fabrizio de André, Domenico Modugno and Renato Carosone, to mention only three others, how can we pretend that “musica leggera” (pop/rock music) is not a part of our Culture?

The answer is simple, it is part of our nation’s Cultural Heritage and for this reason we must finally recognize the importance of “musica leggera” to the life of Italians because without the singers mentioned in this trilogy of articles our existence in recent decades would have been much poorer, in every way.
