Non “solo un Immigrato” ma un essere umano e niente di meno

La vita di Willy Monteiro Duarte  è finita la notte di sabato scorso in una piazza del paese dove molti gli volevano bene quando è stato aggredito da quattro balordi che l’hanno picchiato per venti minuti fino alla morte

Willy Monteiro Duarte è un nome che deve essere ricordato da tutta l’Italia.  Non era “solo un immigrato”, era prima di tutto un essere umano, aveva ventun’anni con ogni diritto di poter vivere in Italia in pace e costruire una vita come hanno fatto i nostri parenti e amici all’estero.  

Willy Monteiro Duarte è cresciuto in Italia da quando aveva solo un anno di età, ha fatto gli studi qui e prima di morire aveva iniziato il lavoro che avrebbe dovuto essere l’inizio di un percorso verso la nuova vita felice che i genitori sognavano quando sono emigrati a Colloredo vicino a Roma, con lui in braccio vent’anni fa. Si, è venuto in Italia da bambino ma a tutti gli effetti era veramente un italiano. 

La sua vita è finita la notte di sabato scorso in una piazza del paese dove molti gli volevano bene quando è stato aggredito da quattro balordi che l’hanno picchiato per venti minuti fino alla morte. La sua vita doveva essere anonima, piena di soddisfazioni di lavoro ed eventualmente una fidanzata, moglie ed infine figli. Ma questo non è stato il suo destino e non per colpa sua. 

Non nominiamo le persone che l’hanno aggredito. Non meritano d’essere ricordati come tali perché il loro atto, secondo le cronache, non si limitava solo a quell’episodio. Difatti, il semplice ed atroce fatto che hanno potuto aggredire la povera vittima per venti minuti, ci dice molto di come erano visti nel paese e, se venisse confermato, dobbiamo chiederci perché le autorità locali, a tutti i livelli, non abbiano fatto niente per prevenire la tragedia che poi è arrivata. 

Sabato sera i quattro balordi non hanno compiuto una semplice aggressione, hanno compiuto un delitto vero e proprio e per questo devono essere processati e condannati, secondo la legge, e senza attenuanti di uso di stupefacenti, oppure d’essere sotto gli effetti degli steroidi della palestra, anzi sono aggravanti perché non esiste nessuna giustificazione per commettere un delitto del genere. 

Inoltre, da società civile, dobbiamo chiederci anche se certi programmi televisivi che tendono a “romanticizzare” gente che in effetti sono criminali e non neo-Robin Hood hanno avuto l’effetto di fare pensare a certi giovani, come i quattro innominabili di sabato sera, che la loro è una vita da imitare, persino fino all’atto più estremo. Davvero possiamo permetterci, nel nome di “intrattenimento”, di dare ai nostri giovani modelli che non sono affatto da imitare ma da condannare sempre e ovunque? 

Se le indagini confermano le cronache giornalistiche, da paese civile dobbiamo pretendere che le autorità chiedano non solo un processo veloce dalla corte più autorevole, quella d’Assise, ma che il loro castigo sia il più pesante possibile perché dobbiamo far capire a tutti che certi comportamenti non appartengono a una società moderna e rispettosa dei diritti umani. E dobbiamo anche pretendere che alla fine della procedura giudiziaria i quattro colpevoli spariscano per sempre dalla nostra vita, che i loro nomi non appariranno più nei giornali e che alla loro morte non saranno ricordati da nessuno tranne i parenti più stretti. 

A rendere questo episodio tragico anche un caso di razzismo, è stata prima una frase choc dei parenti degli aggressori riportata da tutti i giornali del paese e poi dai commenti di utenti dei social che non sono degni di un paese democratico come il nostro. 

Infatti, non nominiamo gli imputati anche perché i loro famigliari avrebbero pronunciato una frase riguardo questo incidente che li rende moralmente responsabili per la tragedia del weekend scorso.  

“In fin dei conti cos’hanno fatto? Niente. Hanno solo ucciso un immigrato”, questa è la frase pronunciata da parenti degli aggressori che molte fonti giornalistiche in Italia hanno riportato in risposta alle reazioni del pubblico per cercare di smorzare il clamore attorno i quattro violenti che dopo aver compiuto il loro “atto coraggioso” sono andati al bar per autocongratularsi per il loro “coraggio”. Ma il loro non è stato un atto di coraggio ma di vera vigliaccheria oltreché mostruoso.  

Nel giro di poche ore altri “coraggiosi” sui social hanno cominciato a “festeggiare” l’accaduto con commenti come “era una scimmia”, “uno scimpanzé in meno”, “se l’è cercata” e così via. Molti di questi utenti son spariti dai social poco dopo aver capito la gravità dei loro commenti, o forse penalizzati dagli amministratori dei social stessi, ma non prima degli screenshot che ora girano liberamente. Ora possiamo solo sperare che ci siano i mezzi che permetteranno alla Polizia Postale per rintracciarli ed imputarli per istigazione a odio razziale ed applicare il massimo della pena per far capire che certi commenti non appartengono al nostro paese e alla civiltà. 

Ci sono quelli che negano l’esistenza del razzismo, ma dopo frasi del genere dai parenti degli imputati e dagli utenti social con quale altro nome possiamo descrivere questi commenti? “Cretinate”, “goliardia”, “bullismo” e chissà quante altre parole non fanno altro che “giustificare” un atto che non è altro che un reato vero verso  i diritti di tutti in Italia. 

Il loro comportamento dimostra a tutto il mondo che il razzismo esiste in una parte della popolazione, non solo d’Italia, ma di ogni paese. E per cancellarlo abbiamo l’obbligo di far capire che non possiamo mai accettare quell’ “attenuante” per qualsiasi motivo e non solo per un delitto…  

Le pagine dei giornali, le cronache televisive e i social sono pieni delle immagini dei presunti responsabili per la morte di Willy Monteiro Duarte che loro stessi avevano messo online per mostrare quanto fossero “bravi e coraggiosi”. Invece, ora sono in carcere in attesa di un eventuale processo per ufficializzare quel che i loro parenti avevano ammesso tacitamente con quella frase orrenda, che non erano affatto “bravi ragazzi”, ma quattro assassini di un ragazzo che cercava di portare pace in una rissa.  

Non esiste attenuante per spiegare un tale atto, non esiste la definizione preterintenzionale, si tratta di un omicidio volontario, perché sennò hanno continuato a menare calci e pugni per venti minuti?. Un ragazzo poco più che ventenne ha avuto una morte atroce e basta dire “era solo un immigrato” per dire che il caso è finito e tutti a casa come prima?  

No, assolutamente no. Il nome di Willy Monteiro Duarte deve essere ricordato come un essere umano per insegnare che ogni vita è preziosa, e che tutti i residenti in Italia hanno le stesse speranze e gli stessi diritti.  

Se fosse possibile bisogna anche seguire legalmente chi cerca di “giustificare” queste azioni con il ragionamento non sciocco, ma criminale, che in fondo la vittima è un immigrato e quindi indegno dei diritti contenuti e protetti in quel che chiamiamo la “Costituzione più bella del mondo”  

Willy Monteiro Duarte deve esser ricordato per farci capire per sempre che le parole belle non valgono niente se permettiamo a quattro assassini innominabili di aggredire chiunque semplicemente perché lo vogliono loro.  

E tutto questo non potrà succedere fino al giorno che avremo capito tutti che la parola “razzismo” non è una bandiera di una parte politica, ma vuol dire offendere i diritti di chiunque sia nel paese, italiano e non.  

Il razzismo non sparirà finché tutti non avranno finalmente capito che la vita di ogni individuo non si giudica dal colore della pelle, dall’accento e le origini. Ogni persona deve essere giudicata dalle proprie azioni personali, nel bene e nel male. Certo, ogni gruppo di immigrati ha i suoi delinquenti, ma non per questo dobbiamo timbrarli tutti nello stesso modo. E tutti gli italiani all’estero ne sanno qualcosa perché fin troppo spesso nelle loro vite hanno sentito dire il binomio italiani/mafia…  

E il nome di Willy Monteiro Duarte va ricordato per sempre anche per dire a tutto il mondo che “immigrato” non è qualcosa di cui vergognarsi, ma un titolo da portare con onore per chi conduce una vita buona nel nuovo paese.  

Come chi compie orrori, come hanno fatto i quattro balordi di sabato notte, non merita altro che il massimo castigo della legge, l’ergastolo, e l’oblio perché non hanno fatto niente di buono per il nostro paese, tranne fare vedere al mondo che anche noi abbiamo chi uccide con la semplice attenuante che “era solo un immigrato”, dimenticando che Willy Monteiro Duarte era, prima di tutto, un essere umano e niente di meno. 

 

He was not “only an immigrant”, he was a human being and nothing less

Willy Monteiro Duarte’s life ended last Saturday night in the town’s piazza where many loved him when he was assaulted by four thugs who beat him for twenty minutes until he died

Willy Monteiro Duarte is a name that must be remembered in all of Italy. He was not “only a migrant”, he was first of all a human being, he was twenty one years old with every right to live in peacefully in Italy and to make a life for himself like our relatives and friends did overseas.

Willy Monteiro Duarte grew up in Italy since he moved here at only one year of age, he studied here and before dying had started a job that should have been the start of a path towards the new and happy life that his parents dreamed of when they migrated to Colloredo near Rome twenty years ago with him in their arms. Yes, he came to Italy as a child but to all intents and purposes he was truly an Italian.

His life ended last Saturday night in the town’s piazza where many loved him when he was assaulted by four thugs who beat him for twenty minutes until he died. His life should have been anonymous, full of satisfaction at work and eventually a girlfriend, wife and finally children. But this was not his fate and it was not his fault.

We will not name the people who assaulted him. They do not deserve to be remembered as such because, according to the newspaper reports, their actions were not limited only to that episode. In fact, the simple and atrocious fact that they were able to attack the poor victim for twenty minutes tells us a lot of how they were seen in the town and, if confirmed, we  must ask ourselves why the local authorities, at all levels, had done nothing to prevent the tragedy that then came.

Saturday evening the four thugs did not carry out a simple assault, they committed a real murder and they must be tried for this and condemned according to the law and with no extenuating circumstances such as the use of drugs or being under the effects of the steroids from the gym, indeed, these are aggravate the situation because there is no justification for carrying out such a crime.

Furthermore, as a civilized society, we must also ask ourselves if certain TV programmes that tend to “romanticize” people who effectively are criminals and not neo-Robin Hoods have the effect of making certain young people, like the four unmentionable people of Saturday night, think that theirs is a life to be copied, even to the most extreme act. Can we truly allow ourselves, in the name of “entertainment”, to give our young people models that are not at all to be imitated but to be condemned always and everywhere?

If the investigations confirm the news reports, as a civilized society we must demand that the authorities ask not only for a quick trial in the most authoritative court, the Assizes, but that their punishment be as heavy as possible because we must make everybody understand that certain behaviour does not belong to a modern society that respects human rights. And we must also demand that at the end of the judicial process that the four culprits disappear forever from our lives, that their names no longer appear in the newspapers and that at their death they will not be remembered by anybody except their closest relatives.

And what made this tragic episode also a case of racism was first a shock statement by relatives of the aggressors that was reported by all the newspapers and followed by comments from users on the social media that are not worthy of a democratic country such as ours.

In fact, we do not name the accused also because their relatives allegedly pronounced a phrase concerning this case that makes them morally responsible for last weekend’s tragedy.

“After all, what did they do? Nothing. They only killed a migrant” This was the phrase pronounced by relatives of the aggressors that many newspaper sources in Italy reported in reply to the public’s reaction to try to dampen the clamour around the four violent young men who, after having carried out their “brave act”, went to the bar to congratulate themselves for their “courage”. But theirs was not a courageous act but one of true cowardice, as well as monstrous.

In the space of a few hours other “brave” people on the social media began to “celebrate” the incident with comments such as, “he was a monkey”, “one less chimpanzee”, “he went looking for it” and so forth. Many of these users disappeared from the social media shortly after having understood the seriousness of their comments or punished by the administrators of the social media themselves but not before the screenshots that are now freely doing the rounds of the social media. Now we can only hope that there are the means which will allow the Postal Police to trace them and to punish them for incitement to racial hatred and to apply the highest penalty to make it clear that certain comments do not belong to our country and civilization.

There are those who deny the existence of racism but after phrases such as those of the relatives of the accused and the social media users what other names can we use to describe these comments? “Idiocy”, “gang spirit”, bullying” and who knows how many other words do nothing but “justify” an act that is nothing more than a true crime against the rights of everybody in Italy.

Their behaviour shows the whole world that racism exists in a part of the population, not only in Italy, but in every country. And to cancel it we have an obligation to make people understand that we can never accept that “mitigating” circumstance for any reason and not only for a murdee.

The pages of the newspapers, the TV reports and the social media are full of the images of the alleged people responsible for the death of Willy Monteiro Duarte that they themselves put online to show how “brave” they were. Instead, they are now in jail waiting for a trial to formalize what their relatives had admitted tacitly with that horrendous phrase, that they were not at all “good guys” but four murderers of a young man who had tried to bring peace to a fight.

There are no extenuating circumstances for an act that cannot be defined as unpremeditated. This was a voluntary homicide because, if it were not, why did they continue to kick and beat him for twenty minutes? A young man in his early twenties had an atrocious death and you simply have to say “he was only an immigrant” to say the case is closed and everybody goes home as before?

No, absolutely not. The name of Willy Monteiro Duarte must be remembered as a human being to teach that every life is precious and that all the residents in Italy have the same hopes and the same rights.

If it is possible we also need to follow legally these who try to “justify” these acts not with the silly but with the criminal reasoning that basically the victim was an immigrant and therefore unworthy of the rights contained and protected in what we call the “world’s most beautiful Constitution”

Willy Monteiro Duarte must be remembered to make us understand forever that beautiful words are worth nothing if we allow four unmentionable killers to attack anyone simply because they want to.

And all this will not happen until the day we have all understood that the word “racism” is not the flag of one political party but it means offending the rights of anyone in the country, Italian or otherwise.

Racism will not disappear until everybody has finally understood that the life of every individual is not judged by the colour of the skin, accent and origins. Every person must be judged by their personal actions, for better or for worse. Of course, every group of immigrants has its criminals but this does not mean we must consider them all in the same way. And all the Italians overseas know something about this because all too often in their lives they have heard the combination Italians/mafia…

And the name of Willy Monteiro Duarte must be remembered forever also to tell all the world that “immigrant” is not something to be ashamed of but a title to be borne with honour by those who lead a good life in the new country.

Like those who commit horrors, like the four thugs did on Saturday night, do not deserve anything except the maximum punishment according the law, life imprisonment, and to be forgotten because they did nothing good for the country except to show the world that we too have people who kill with the simple “extenuating circumstance” that “he was only an immigrant” to forget that Willy Monteiro Duarte was first of all a human being and nothing less.
