L’Italia Ignota

Unknown Italy

The photo at the top of this article is of the beautiful Ducal Palace of an Italian city that is little known in Italy and almost totally unknown overseas, Urbino. The Palace was built by the desire of a major character of the Renaissance, Federica da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino and Captain General and Standard Bearer of Pope Sixtus IV, he too unknown to the great international public that often knows his famous portrait by Piero della Francesca without knowing who he was.

We start this article with these two images to illustrate a point that many people do not want to recognize about the promotion of our country. In a period in which we have to think about relaunching Italian tourism to recover from the international pandemic we must understand that in the past we have advertised Rome, Florence and Venice so well that tourists have to queue for hours to see the main attractions while places like Urbino, Padua, Arezzo, Modena and countless others do not attract the tourists that their history and artistic treasures deserve.

But this trend is not limited only to the Cities of Art but extends to many activities in all the country that, if promoted in the right way internationally, would attract tourists from around the world.

Every spring and summer in Italy we see marathons ultra marathons and other sporting events that showcase beautiful landscapes in all the regions yet, despite the fact that many Italian athletes take part, we see few foreign athletes. We must ask ourselves, what are the organizers and FIDAL, Italy’s athletics federation, doing to attract athletes from around the world to Italy?

Siena’s Palio is known around the world but how many know of the Palios in Ascoli, Faenza, Foligno and Asti, to name some, and other historical re-enactments? Let’s ask ourselves another question, what are the organizers and the regional governments of these events doing to attract international tourists with targeted promotions for history buffs?

The answer to these rhetorical questions is always the same, little or nothing.

And like these examples we could talk about ceramics, places of classical Italian films, even popular festivals in many regions that would make the world understand that our cuisine is not only pasta and pizza. All this and much, much more make up what is undoubtedly the world’s biggest Cultural heritage but the answer to the observations above explain why we are ranked only seventh as a world tourist destination.

If, as a country, we really want to massively increase the number of international tourists we must stop thinking of the stereotypes of Michelangelo’s David, the Colosseum and Venice’s canals and we must start to present to the world a menu that is much, much vaster and for all tastes because no other country can offer international tourists what Italy can offer.

And then there is another gap that we make all too often. We have a huge resource overseas that would not only provide many tourists every year but these would also be the best spokespersons for our country, the more than 90 million people around the world who are migrants or the children and descendants of our migrants who are often looking for their identity which also includes our Cultural Heritage.

So, we want to ask not only the national Government but also the regional Governments that are responsible for relations with our relatives and friends overseas, what are they doing to attract these many millions to their country of origin and also to invite them to help us to promote Italy in their countries of residence/birth?

Italy urgently needs international tourism that is on a par with the value of our Cultural Heritage, firstly because it would mean more work for Italians but above all because the money that would come in from the tourists is needed to maintain and restore places and works of Art that we risk losing due to an endemic lack of funds. Furthermore, carrying out this work means being able to offer even more attractions to the world’s tourists in order to make our tourism grow more and more in the future.

So, let us decide once and for all to not limit our tourism offer to the world to only three cities and to show the world that this hitherto unknown Italy has much more to offer than the world knows. We have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose. What are we waiting for to change how we promote our Culture and tourism?
