Dopo una parentesi politica dovuta alle recenti elezioni politiche in Italia del 25 settembre scorso e all’insediamento del nuovo Governo di centrodestra con Giorgia Meloni alla Presidenza del Consiglio, vogliamo tornare su un tema che avevamo iniziato con l’obiettivo di dimostrare che gli italiani nel mondo hanno fornito molti esempi di eroi di ogni genere per i quali non abbiamo affatto bisogno di usare personaggi ambigui e ingannevoli per dare lezioni di vita.
L’esempio di oggi viene dagli Stati Uniti, ma, come vedremo nelle prossime settimane, ogni continente ha fornito persone che hanno dato onore alle loro origini italiane.
E partiamo da una domanda, come si definisce un eroe? Sarebbe facile dire che sia qualcuno che ha avuto successo, ma la figura di oggi non è stato solo un uomo di successo finanziario, ma ha avuto un successo molto più grande perché ha potuto guardare la vita oltre i soldi e ha aiutato persone nei loro momenti difficili, non solo gente comune in periodi di disgrazia, ma anche persone che avevano bisogno di sostegno per lanciare le loro carriere e che di seguito hanno arricchito la nostra vita per i molti decenni che ne sono seguiti.
Amadeo Peter Giannini (1870-1949) è nato in California negli Stati Uniti da genitori emigrati da Favale di Malvaro (GE). Ha perso il padre in giovanissima età in seguito a un litigio banale, un evento sconvolgente che non gli ha impedito di trarre il meglio dalla vita e quindi questo gli ha permesso di comprendere le esigenze di chi faceva fatica a trovare i soldi e il sostegno necessari per lanciarsi in una nuova vita.
Quando la madre si è risposata ha aiutato il patrigno con la promozione dei suoi prodotti dimostrando un’accortezza straordinaria, che ha saputo dimostrare ancora di più quando ha sposato la figlia di un banchiere e le sue idee ed intraprendenza gli hanno permesso prima di poter mettersi in pensione già a trentun anni, e poi ad avviare grandi imprese e una Fondazione in grado di aiutare anche il paese d’origine dei suoi genitori.
Anzi, sembra quasi banale dire che al suo ritorno alla vita lavorativa fu tra i fondatori della società denominata “Banca d’Italia” che nel tempo divenne la Bank of America, la più grande banca commerciale del mondo. Ma due eventi storici hanno fatto capire che Giannini aveva una mentalità molto più aperta e benevola dei soliti stereotipi dei banchieri.
Una mentalità che aveva dimostrato già da giovane quando, dopo il terribile terremoto che colpì la sua San Francisco il 4 aprile 1906, invece di fare quello che facevano le altre banche restando chiuse nel periodo immediatamente successivo al terremoto, Giannini capì la necessità di fornire fondi a chi aveva perso tutto e riaprì la banca con un tavolo nel mercato per fornire denaro che aiutò la città a rimettersi in piedi in grande stile.
Oltre due decenni dopo, durante la Grande Depressione dopo il collasso economico del 1929, e di nuovo “pensionato”, tornò alla vita di banchiere per aiutare la “gente comune” colpita profondamente dalle conseguenze di quel collasso economico enorme, introducendo metodi che incoraggiavano la gente a cominciare a investire di nuovo per rilanciare l’economia.
E durante questi capitoli, come altri della sua vita, lui capiva anche che la gente aveva anche bisogno di ben altro nella vita e non solo di pensare ai soldi. Infatti è stato Amadeo Giannini ad aprire la carriera del grande Charlie Chaplin, finanziando il film capolavoro “Il Monello” che lanciò la sua carriera e anni dopo per lo stesso motivo è stato ancora lui a fornire a Chaplin e altri grandi attori dell’epoca i fondi per formare un nuovo studio cinematografico, l‘ora leggendario “United Artists”.
Quando Walt Disney si trovò in grandissima difficoltà economica perché il suo “Snow White and the seven dwarves” (Biancaneve ed i sette nani) era andato due milioni di dollari oltre le previsioni di spesa, Giannini gli fornì i soldi dimostrando di riconoscere l‘importanza di film e spettacoli del genere per la qualità della vita. Come fu anche lui a fornire l’appoggio finanziario che permise la realizzazione del grande classico non solo del cinema americano, ma anche del mondo “Gone with the wind” (Via col vento).
Ma l’aiuto più importante da parte di Giannini, sia come gesto di riconoscimento del suo passato, che in termini di quel che questa rubrica vuole fare capire ai nostri lettori in tutto il mondo, partendo proprio dall’Italia, è stato quando Amadeo Giannini conobbe un emigrato italiano di origini siciliane che agli inizi della propria carriera cinematografica che non riusciva a trovare un finanziatore del film che voleva realizzare. In quell’uomo Amadeo Peter Giannini vide quel che nessuno aveva riconosciuto in lui, il talento raro di un regista capace di raccontare storie importanti e sempre attuali.
Con il sostegno di Giannini il leggendario regista Frank Capra realizzò il suo capolavoro “It’s a wonderful life” (La vita è meravigliosa) che ancora oggi è uno dei film più popolari del mondo durante il periodo di Natale e così cominciò la carriera del regista che più di qualsiasi altro ha potuto mostrare quel che molti chiamavano “The American dream”, cioè il “sogno americano” che in quell’epoca spinse il innumerevoli milioni di persone, e non solo italiani, a scegliere come nuova meta di vita gli Stati Uniti d’America.
Nel corso della sua vita Giannini ha contribuito non solo a lanciare grandi società come Chrysler e Hewlett-Packard, dare un contributo importante per la costruzione del celebre “Golden Gate Bridge” di San Francisco, ma ha anche donato soldi alla gente comune, partendo dagli immigrati, perché sapeva che le grandi economie sono costituite anche dal loro impegno che non raramente, e lui stesso ne era una prova, sono capaci di fare grandissime cose proprio perché la vita e le loro origini hanno fornito le esperienze necessarie per superare gli ostacoli sulla loro strada.
Tuttavia, l’assistenza di Amadeo Giannini non si è limitata solo al suo paese di nascita, ma ha anche aiutato il paese di origine dei suoi genitori.
Nel 1945, dopo la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale che lasciò l’Italia in uno stato pietoso, Amadeo Giannini fondò la A.P. Giannini Foundation che non solo ha finanziato ricerche scientifiche, ma anche industrie italiane per poter rilanciarsi il più presto possibile. E ancora oggi la sua Fondazione continua il lavoro iniziata da Giannini.
Troppe volte pensiamo al successo in termini di soldi, se hai molti soldi in banca hai avuto successo, e non utilizziamo altri metri di giudizio. Però, la vita di Amadeo Peter Giannini dimostra chiaramente che i soldi sono un modo ingannevole di poter giudicare il “successo” nella vita di ogni individuo.
Il successo arriva in molti modi, con le grandi aziende, con le opere d’arte, o anche con la possibilità di far andare i figli all’università per dare loro l’opportunità di sviluppare il più possibile le loro capacità, e quindi dare un contributo importante alla società. Questi sono tutti modi per il successo che molti ignorano semplicemente perché pensano solo al denaro come metro di paragone.
Nell’aiutare la povera gente, Giannini ha dimostrato una lungimiranza ammirevole che dobbiamo copiare perché la vita non è sempre facile e aiutare chi ha bisogno di aiuto in momenti di difficoltà non è semplicemente un atto di beneficenza, ma anche il riconoscimento che tutti abbiamo bisogno degli altri e che nessuno vive da solo, senza eccezioni.
E nell’aiutare gente come Capra, Disney, Chaplin e molti altri, Amadeo Giannini ha continuato anche una grande tradizione italiana che è stata uno dei simboli del periodo più glorioso della nostra Storia, il Rinascimento: il mecenatismo, perché senza gente come Lorenzo de Medici, detto “il Magnifico” proprio per questo aspetto del suo carattere, il nostro passato e di conseguenza il nostro presente sarebbero stati molto più poveri.
E senza personaggi come Giannini e Lorenzo il Magnifico come farebbero gli artisti a realizzare i loro capolavori?
Quindi, quando parliamo di “eroi” ricordiamoci che diventare ricchi è semplicemente una questione di vanità, ma saper usare quei soldi per migliorare la vita di tutti è un vero atto da eroi…

After a political interlude due to the recent national elections in Italy on September 25 last and the installation of the new centre-right Government with Giorgia Meloni as Prime Minister, we want to return to a theme that we began with the aim of showing that the Italians around the world have provided many examples of heroes of every kind for which we do not at all need to use ambiguous and unreal characters to give lessons on life.
Today’s example comes from the United States but, as we shall see in the coming weeks, every continent has provided people who have brought honour to their Italian origins.
And we start with a question, how do we define a hero? It would be easy to say that he or she is a successful person but today’s figure was not only a successful man financially but he was much more successful because he could look at life beyond money and he helped people in their times of hardship, not only ordinary people in periods of disaster but also people who needed support to launch their careers and who subsequently enriched our lives for the many decades that followed
Amadeo Peter Giannini (1870-1949) was born in California in the United States of Italian migrants from Favale di Malvaro(province of Genoa). He lost his father at a very young age following a trivial argument, a shocking event that did not prevent him from making the best of life and therefore this allowed him to understand the needs those who found it hard to find the money and the support needed to launch into a new life.
When his mother remarried he helped his step-father with the promotion of his products showing extraordinary shrewdness that he knew how to show even more when he married the daughter of a banker and his ideas and resourcefulness allowed him to first be able to retire at the young age thirty one, and then to start major enterprises and a Foundation that were also able to help his parents’ country of origin.
Indeed, it almost seems banal to say that on his return to working life he was one of the founders of the company called the “Bank of Italy” which over time became the Bank of America, the world’s largest commercial bank. But two historical events made it clear that Giannini had a mentality that was much more open and benevolent than the usual stereotypes of bankers.
Already as a young man when the terrible earthquake struck his San Francisco on April 4, 1906 when, instead of doing what other banks did and stayed closed in the period immediately after the earthquake, Giannini understood the need to provide funds to those who had lost everything and he reopened the bank in the open in the market to provide money that helped the city get back on its feet in a big way.
More than two decades later, during the Great Depression after the financial collapse of 1929, and once again in “retirement”, he returned to the life of a banker to help “ordinary people” profoundly affected by the consequences of that enormous financial collapse, introducing methods that encouraged people to start investing once more to revive the economy.
And during these episodes, as in others in his life, he also understood that people also needed something else in their lives and not only to think about money. In fact, it was Amadeo Giannini who opened the career of the great Charlie Chaplin by financing his masterpiece “The Kid” and years later for the same reason it was still he who provided the funds to Charlie Chapman and other great actors of the time to set up a new movie studio, the now legendary “United Artists”.
When Walt Disney found himself in enormous financial difficulty because his “Snow White and the seven dwarves” had gone two million dollars over budget Giannini provided the funds that showed he recognized the importance of films and shows of this kind for the quality of life. As he was also the one who provided the financial support that allowed the production of the great classic not only of American cinema but also of the world “Gone with the wind”.
However, possibly the most important assistance given by Giannini, at least as a gesture of acknowledgement of his past and in terms of what this column wants to make our readers around the world understand, starting precisely with Italy, was when Amadeo Gianni met an Italian migrant from Sicily who wanted to start his movie career but he could not find a financier for the film that would let him do so. In that man Amadeo Peter Giannini saw what nobody had recognized in him, a rare talent as a director capable of telling important and timeless stories.
In that way the legendary director Frank Capra was able to film his great “It’s a wonderful life” that today is still one of the world’s most popular Christmas films and so launched the career of the director who more than any other was able to show what many called the “American dream” which was the reason why countless millions, and not only Italians, chose the United States of America as their destination.
Throughout his life Giannini contributed not only to launching large companies such as Chrysler and Hewlett-Packard, he gave an important contribution to the construction of San Francisco’s famous “Golden Gate Bridge” but he also gave money to ordinary people, starting with immigrants, because he knew that the great economies are also made up of their commitment so that not infrequently, and he was proof of this, they are capable of doing great things precisely because life and their origins have provided the experience needed to overcome life’s barriers.
However, Amadeo Giannini’s assistance was not limited to only his country of birth but he also helped his parents’ country of origin.
In 1945, at the end of World War Two that left Italy in a pitiful state, Amadeo Giannini founded his A. P. Giannini Foundation that financed not only scientific research but also Italian industries to be able to restart as quickly as possible. And today his Foundation still continues the work begun by Giannini.
Too often we think of “success” in terms of money, if you have a lot of money in the bank you have been successful and we do not use other yardsticks. However, Amadeo Peter Giannini’s life clearly showed that money is a deceptive way of being able to judge the “success” of each individual’s life.
Success comes in many ways, with large companies, with works of Art, or even with being able to let the children go to university to give them the opportunity to develop their skills as much as possible and therefore make important contributions to society. These are all ways to success that many ignore simply because they only think about money as the yardstick.
In helping poor people he showed admirable foresight that we must copy because life is not always easy and helping those who need help in times of trouble is not simply an act of charity but also the acknowledgement that we all need the help of others and nobody lives alone, without exception.
And in helping people like Capra, Disney, Chaplin and many others, Amadeo Giannini also continued a great Italian tradition that was one of the symbols of the most glorious period of our history, the Renaissance, “il mecenatismo” (patronage of the Arts), because without people like Lorenzo de Medici, called “il Magnifico” (the Magnificent) precisely because of this aspect of his character, our past, and subsequently our present, would have been much poorer.
And without people such as Giannini and Lorenzo il Magnifico how would the artists make made their masterpieces?
So, when we talk about “heroes” let us remember that getting rich is simply a matter of pride, but knowing how to use that money to make everybody’s life better is a true act of heroes…
