Anna Maria Mazzini è conosciuta soprattutto con il suo nome d’arte: MINA

Nel 1982 un gruppo nuovo ha avuto un successo inatteso in Australia. Il successo è stata una sorpresa non tanto perché la canzone fosse in italiano, infatti nel corso degli anni Umberto Tozzi, Alan Sorrenti e Ada Mori hanno avuto successi nel paese, ma nel caso dei Globos la canzone era stata un successo in Italia venticinque anni prima quando non c’era RAI World, tanto meno le stazioni radio delle varie comunità italiane. E quindi persino molti italiani in Australia non conoscevano il brano che in Italia fu uno dei moltissimi successi della Tigre sconosciuta.

Ma quel successo australiano è stata la prova che artisti italiani, senza dimenticare anche gli scrittori e altre categorie che potrebbero avere grande successo all’estero, si possono affermare anche nella nostra lingua se promossi nel modo giusto e con introduzioni in altre lingue per prepararne il terreno all’estero.

Molti in Italia non avranno una sorpresa a capire la grandezza della cantante soggetto di questo articolo perché lei, insieme al suo grande amico, nonché il suo socio in avventure musicali, Adriano Celentano, anche lui sottovalutato dal pubblico non italiano, hanno accompagnato gli italiani nel corso della loro vita, negli amori e anche nelle tristezze per oltre 5 decenni. Diremo di più, non crediamo esistano altri cantanti nel mondo che abbiano avuto canzoni e album di successo in ogni decennio dagli anni 50 ad oggi.

Però, altrettanti italiani in Italia si meraviglieranno nello scoprire che lei è sconosciuta quasi del tutto al grande pubblico internazionale.

Il nome della Tigre

Il nome Anna Maria Mazzini non vuol dire tanto, nemmeno per molti in Italia. È nata a Busto Arsizio il 25 marzo 1940, ma qualche mese dopo la sua famiglia si è trasferita nella città che le diede il soprannome, la “Tigre di Cremona”.

Anna Maria Mazzini è conosciuta soprattutto con il suo nome d’arte:  MINA.

Ma nello scrivere di lei, e anche di altri grandi cantanti, dobbiamo fare il commento che, benché se ne siano già andati altri grandissimi cantanti come Fabrizio de André e Lucio Dalla, il Bel Paese sta per assistere alla fine di una generazione straordinaria di cantanti e cantautori e nel far conoscere al mondo questa “tigre sconosciuta” ci auguriamo che non aspetteremo la loro scomparsa per immortalarli nell’unico vero modo possibile, farli finalmente conoscere al mondo intero e non solo quello di lingua italiana.

L’elenco dei suoi successi comprende canzoni bellissime come “Il cielo in una stanza”, “Amor mio”, “Grande, grande, grande”, “L’immensità”, “Parole, parole, parole” e anche “Se telefonando”. Ma non tutte le canzoni sono d’amore e passione come dimostra “Mille bolle blu” e la canzone che è stata di grande successo in Australia, di cui parleremo tra poco.

Consigliamo ai nostri lettori all’estero di cercare questi brani sul web, ma voglio indicare in modo particolare un brano e un filmato, entrambi di pezzi ignoti al pubblico internazionale, per dimostrare cosa il mondo ha perso in questi oltre sei decenni di successi.

Il silenzio fatto musica

Un brano che ci fa sentire la forza della sua voce è stato presentato a San Remo del 1968 addirittura da Dionne Warwick e Tony Del Monaco, ma il successo nelle classifiche è stato di Mina e il testo scritto dal grandissimo paroliere Mogol insieme a Paolo Limiti ed Elio Isola.

Presentiamo questo capolavoro con i sottotitoli per fare capire meglio al lettore anche la bellezza delle parole:

Mina però non ha avuto solo un successo straordinario, ma anche una vita segnata da controversie a causa della sua vita privata che l’ha vista bandita dalla RAI per ben due volte, peggio ancora in un periodo in cui non c’erano le reti privati per darle un palco nazionale televisivo nel frattempo. Poi, tragicamente anche la scomparsa prematura del fratello ha avuto un impatto enorme sulla sua vita.

Ma Mina è sempre tornata sul palco e il piccolo schermo con successo enorme tra il pubblico. Lei ha presentato programmi di varietà, ha potuto fare duetti e scene buffe con grandi cantanti, attori e comici che regolarmente vediamo oggi in Italia nel programma estivo della RAI “Techtechete”, che non fa altro che confermare il suo talento e voce straordinaria.

Ma tra questi programmi un programma in particolare ha lasciato la documentazione di una performance davvero incredibile, che mette in luce anche un altro cantante quasi sconosciuto del tutto all’estero e che in Italia è considerato tra i cantanti più importanti della nostra musica leggera.

Il duetto straordinario

Nel nominare il paroliere Mogol sopra non abbiamo parlato del capitolo più importante della sua carriera unica di autore di testi di canzoni. La musica leggera italiana degli anni 60 e 70 è stata segnata in modo spettacolare dal sodalizio tra Lucio Battisti e Mogol (Giulio Rapetti, il soggetto di un nostro articolo qualche mese fa), che ha prodotto una lunga serie di canzoni e album di successo per due decenni.

Era naturale che Mina facesse un programma e un duetto con Battisti, che è scomparso  a soli 55 anni nel 1998. Nel 1972 lui era all’apice della sua carriera e il loro duetto televisivo ci da un’opportunità, non solo di vedere due grandissimi artisti in azione, ma di ascoltare pezzetti dei successi del binomio Battisti-Mogol.

Nell’ascoltare queste canzoni il lettore deve tenere in mente un aspetto del duetto. All’epoca era solito alla televisione italiana cantare in play back. Guardando Mina e Battisti insieme ci vuole poco per capire che cantano dal vivo e questo rende il filmato ancora più incredibile.

Dobbiamo anche ricordare che solo un anno dopo di Battisti è scomparso anche colui che è considerato il più grande dei nostri cantautori, che ha scritto canzoni che oltretutto sono vere e proprie poesie, Fabrizio de André, e il nostro paese deve fare molto di più per fare conoscere al mondo anche questo cantante, persino Peter Gabriel dei Genesis riconosce la bellezza della sua musica.

Nel 1974 Mina decise di lasciare il mondo dei concerti e i programmi televisivi, con l’eccezione di due performances straordinarie, alla Bussola nel 1978 per festeggiare i suoi 20 anni di carriera e sul web per il suo pubblico nel 2001(entrambi disponibili su YouTube). Ha continuato a cantare e ogni anno rilascia un album e ogni album vede di nuovo successo.

Successo inatteso in Australia

Ma qual era la canzone di Mina che ha avuto successo in Australia nel 1982? Era “Tintarella di Luna” interpretata dal complesso locale “The Globos”. Dobbiamo dire per chi non è mai stato in Australia, che il giornale di lingua italiana più venduta del paese è “Il Globo” di Melbourne, e allora il nome del complesso è anche un omaggio a una parte importante della comunità italiana nella terra australe.

I nostri lettori in Italia nel vedere questo filmato riconosceranno immediatamente che lo stile e il modo di vestire della cantante principale è davvero una copia dello stile di Mina, e quindi anche un omaggio importante a lei. Alla fine c’è l’intervista al complesso che spiega perché ha scelto una canzone italiana del 1957. Tristemente non si pronuncia mai il nome di Mina.

Ascoltare le risposte dei componenti del complesso ci da la prova che promuovere più e meglio la nostra Cultura, di cui la musica leggera è una parte importante nel corso degli ultimi decenni, è più che possibile, basta avere la reale volontà di farlo.

Come per molti altri cantanti, autori e artisti, è semplicemente incredibile per gli italiani in Italia pensare che artisti del genere siano sconosciuti all’estero. Ma non è incredibile, è la realtà dolorosa della nostra Cultura.

Troppi italiani, a partire dai nostri addetti ai lavori, di tutte la categorie della nostra Cultura, inclusa quella “Alta”, sono così convinti della grandezza della nostra Cultura che non si rendono conto che non è proprio così dal momento che partiamo per l’estero.

Allora, non aspettiamo più per fare le promozioni per fare conoscere al mondo questi personaggi italiani fondamentali per la qualità della nostra vita, e certamente non aspettiamo che sia troppo tardi per loro vedere la loro arte finalmente riconosciuta dal grande pubblico internazionale.

The Unknown Tiger

In 1982 a new pop group had an unexpected hit in Australia. The hit was a surprise not so much because the song was in Italian, in fact, over the years Umberto Tozzi, Alan Sorrenti and Ada Mori had hits in the country, but in the case of “The Globos” the song had been a hit 25 years before in Italy, when there was no RAI World, much less the various Italian community radio stations.

But that Australian hit was proof that Italian artists, without forgetting writers and other categories who could be very successful overseas as well, can also establish themselves in our language if they are promoted in the right way and by being introduced in other languages to prepare the ground overseas.

Many people in Italy will not be surprised to understand the greatness of the singer who is the subject of this article because she, together with her great friend, as well as her partner in musical adventures, Adriano Celentano who is also underestimated by the non-Italian public, have accompanied Italians during the course of their lives, their loves and even their sadness for more than 5 decades. We will say more, we do not believe there are any other singers in the world who have had successful songs and albums in every decade from the 1950s to today.

However, just as many Italians would be amazed to discover that she is virtually unknown to the great international audience.

The Tiger’s name

The name Anna Maria Mazzini does not mean much, not even to many Italians. She was born in Busto Arsizio on March 25, 1940 but a few months later her family moved to the city that gave her the nickname, la Tigre di Cremona (the Tiger of Cremona).

But in writing about her, and also other great singers, we must state that, although many other great singers such as Fabrizio de André and Lucio Dalla have already passed on, Italy is about to witness the end of an extraordinary generation of singers and singer-songwriters and in introducing this “unknown tiger” to the world we hope that we will not wait until their passing to immortalize them in the only real way possible, by finally making them known to the whole world and not just that of the Italian language.

The list of her hits includes beautiful songs such as “Il cielo in una stanza”, “Amor mio”, “Grande, grande, grande”, L’Immensità”, “Parole, parole, parole” and also “Se telefonando”. But not all the songs are about love and passion as she showed in “Mille bolle blu” and the song that was a big hit in Australia and we will talk discuss later.

We suggest to our readers overseas to look for these songs on the net but we want to point out specifically a track and a film clip, both of pieces unknown to the great international market, to show what the world has missed in these more than five decades of hits.

The silence made of music

One song that lets us hear the strength of her voice was presented at the San Remo Song Festival in 1968 by no less than Dionne Warwick and Tony Del Monaco but the success on the charts was by Mina. The lyrics were written by the great wordsmith Mogol together with Paolo Limiti and Elio Isola. We present this masterpiece with subtitles to let the reader better understand the beauty of the words as well:

Mina however did not only have extraordinary success, she also had a life marked by controversy because of her private life that saw her twice banned by RAI, worse still in a period in which there were not yet the private channels to give her a national television stage in the meantime. And then, tragically by the premature death of her brother that had a huge impact on her life.

But Mina always came back to the stage and the small screen with enormous success. She presented musical variety programmes in which she performed duets and comic sketches with great singers, actors and comedians that we see regularly on RAI’s summer TV programme “Techetechete” that only confirm her talent and extraordinary voice.

And in particular, one of these programmes left us the documentation of a truly incredible performance that also puts the spotlight on another singer who is virtually unknown overseas and who in Italy is considered one of the country’s most important singers of light music (pop, rock, etc.).

The extraordinary duet

When we named Mogol above we did not talk about the most important chapter of his unique career as the author of lyrics. Italian light music in the 60s and 70s was marked in the most spectacular way by the partnership between Lucia Battisti and Mogol (Giulio Rapetti, who was the subject of one of our articles a few months ago) that for two decades produced a long line of successful songs and albums.

It was natural that Mina would have a programme and perform a duet with Battisti, who died in 1998 at only 55. In 1972 he was at the peak of his career and their duet on television gives us the chance not only to see two great artists in action but also to listen to excerpts of the hits by the Battisti-Mogol partnership.

While listening to the songs the reader must bear in mind one aspect of this duet. At the time the usual practice on Italian television was to sing in playback. Watching Mina and Battisti together it takes little to understand that they were performing live and this makes the clip even more incredible.

 

We must also remember that only one year after Battisti Fabrizio de André, the singer who is considered the greatest of our cantautori (singer song writers), also passed away. He wrote songs that are above all true poetry and our country must do much more to also let the world know this singer who even Peter Gabriel of the group Genesis recognizes for the beauty of his music.

In 1974 Mina decided to leave the world of concerts and television programmes, with the exception of two extraordinary performances, at the Bussola night club in Tuscany to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her career and in 2001 on the web for her public (both available on Youtube). She continues to sing and every year she releases an album and every year she sees new success.

The unexpected hit in Australia

But which was Mina’s song that became a hit in Australia in 982? It was “Tintarella di luna” (Moonlight tan) interpreted by the local group “The Globos”. For those who have never been in Australia we must say that the country’s most popular Italian language newspaper is Melbourne’s Il Globo and therefore the group’s name is also a tribute to an important part of the Italian community in Australia.

Watching this clip our readers in Italy will immediately recognize that the lead singer’s style and way of dressing are true copies of Mina and therefore this too is an important tribute to her. At the there is an interview with the group that explains why it chose an Italian song from 1957. Sadly Mina’s name is never mentioned.

 

Listening to the answers by the members of the group give us proof that promoting more and better our Culture, of which light music has been an important part over the last few decades, is more than possible, we only need the real will to do so.

As with many other singers, authors and artists, it is simply unbelievable for Italians in Italy to think that such artists are unknown overseas. But it is not unbelievable, it is the painful reality of our Culture.

Too many Italians, starting with our experts in all the categories of our Culture, including “High Culture”, are so convinced of our Culture’s greatness that they do not understand that this is not the case from the moment we leave for overseas.

So, let us wait no more to carry out the promotions to let the world know these Italian performers, artists and authors who are essential for the quality of our lives and, of course, let us not wait until it is too late for them to see their art finally recognized by the great international audience
