I volti italiani nel mondo da riconoscere

Gli emigrati italiani e i loro discendenti si sono distinti in tutti i continenti e in tutti i rami della vita umana sin dal loro arrivo nei nuovi paesi di residenza.

Quando parliamo degli italiani all’estero la mente di molti, anzi troppi in Italia, torna alle immagini dei bastimenti, magari le foto d’archivio in bianco e nero degli italiani nella famosa Ellis Island di New York che era la porta principale per milioni di loro nel cercare una vita nuova lontano dai luoghi di nascita e gioventù, per chi poi sarà sepolto in un paese lontano che nemmeno sognava a quella tenera età.

Però, se cominciamo a pensare a cosa hanno fatto questi milioni di italiani all’estero nel corso di oltre un secolo e mezzo, quante persone in Italia sono capaci di andare oltre i luoghi comuni, gli stereotipi e, tristemente, gli sfottò che alcuni fanno, perché i discendenti di questi emigrati spesso sanno poco o niente del paese d’origine dei genitori, nonni e bisnonni?

Recentemente un controllo dei giornali esteri su internet ci ha dato molto da pensare su questo aspetto, non solo per noi nel giornale, ma osiamo dire anche per l’Italia in generale che ha la memoria troppo corta per quel che riguarda i nostri parenti e amici all’estero.

L’italiano e il monumento nazionale

Conosciamo tutti una delle statue più grandi del mondo che è anche un monumento nazionale importantissimo per gli Stati Uniti. Il monumento di Mount Rushmore nel Dakota del sud mostra i volti di quattro presidenti americani, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt e Abraham Lincoln. L’intenzione di questo monumento era di lodare la Democrazia, ma in un certo senso il monumento è anche il riconoscimento di chi ha dato un contributo fondamentale alla crescita non solo degli Stati Uniti, ma anche di molti altri paesi, gli immigrati, di cui i nostri parenti e amici erano e rimangono tuttora uno dei gruppi più importanti.

Per 75 anni la famiglia di Luigi Del Bianco ha lottato per far riconoscere il ruolo di scalpellino principale del monumento di Mount Rushmore. Era stato proprio l’ideatore stesso del monumento a chiedere la sua inclusione nel progetto, perché si era distinto in altri monumenti dello stesso architetto e la foto di Del Bianco in testa a questo articolo lo dimostra nel corso di una di queste opere.

Nel 2006 il National Park Service del paese che amministra il monumento, ha finalmente riconosciuto il ruolo di Del Bianco nella realizzazione di questa opera e anche il suo comune di residenza ne ha fatto giusto omaggio all’emigrato italiano.

Ma nel congratularsi con la famiglia di Del Bianco per la lotta per far riconoscere il lavoro del loro nonno in queste opere, dobbiamo chiederci quanti altri italiani sono stati coinvolti nel progetto, e altri del genere che non sono stati riconosciuti?

Gli scalpellini italiani sono stati fondamentali nella costruzione non solo di monumenti come Mount Rushmore, come anche di parlamenti, ponti e innumerevoli costruzioni pubbliche in tutto il mondo, e tristemente questi contributi sono ignorati (in entrambi in sensi della parola) in Italia.

Ma se parlassimo solo degli scalpellini italiani nel mondo rischiamo di vedere solo un dettaglio di un quadro molto più vasto e straordinario di quel che molti di noi immaginiamo.

Altri contributi

Infatti, gli emigrati italiani e i loro discendenti si sono distinti in tutti i continenti e in tutti i rami della vita umana sin dal loro arrivo nei nuovi paesi di residenza.

Di nuovo vediamo i lavori umili della prima generazione in ciascun paese, ma non ci rendiamo conto che questi lavori avevano uno scopo preciso, di poter dare ai loro figli, e di conseguenza ai loro nipotini e pronipoti, opportunità che all’epoca non erano possibili nel loro paese d’origine.

Questa prima generazione ha lavorato nei campi e nei grandi stabilimenti. Alcuni sono diventati macellai e proprietari di negozi di generi alimentari, magari indirizzati ai loro connazionali nei primi anni, per poi espandersi al resto della comunità. Altri sono diventati falegnami, elettricisti e idraulici per poi diventare costruttori a loro turno. Altri hanno lavorato nei negozi e i mercati e chissà quanti altri lavori, ma sempre con il sogno del futuro.

In questi e molti altri modi la prima generazione è diventata ricca e non solo nel senso economico. È facile lodare chi ha potuto realizzare imprese importanti come ha fatto la famiglia Belgiorno-Nettis in Australia, che ha visto Papa Giovanni Paolo II celebrare una messa nel loro stabilimento e come loro altri in altri paesi. Però, nel concentrarci su questi successi solamente economici non vediamo moltissime altre storie di altri tipi di successo che portano nomi e ispirazione italiana.

Imprese

I figli e discendenti di emigrati italiani sono diventati importanti avvocati, medici, inseganti, scienziati, politici (anche ministri e capi di governo in alcuni paesi) e professionisti di ogni genere. Inoltre gli italiani sono diventati cantanti, artisti, attori, scultori e registi. Figli e nipoti di emigrati italiani si trovano in tutti campi della vita moderna in tutti i paesi dove ci sono comunità italiane, e quindi hanno avuto un impatto molto più grande nei loro nuovi paesi di residenza di quel che riusciamo a comprendere.

E cosa sappiamo di questi figli, nipoti e pronipoti di emigrati italiani? A parte qualche caso di cantanti, registi e attori cinematografici, di solito americani, ne sappiamo veramente poco.

Cosa sappiamo dei nostri parenti e amici che hanno costruito importanti associazioni di assistenza sociale, culturale e artistica in giro per il mondo? Di nuovo, poco o niente. Senza dimenticare i nostri autori e poeti, anche in altre lingue. Come abbiamo il dovere di fare conoscere al mondo la grandezza della nostra Cultura, abbiamo anche l’obbligo di far conoscere in Italia i nostri tesori culturali italiani internazionali.

A volte sappiamo di sportivi di origine italiana che vengono a giocare in Italia, ma non ci rendiamo conto di quanti oriundi si sono distinti nello sport in altri paesi.

Perciò, non dobbiamo solo pensarci ma dobbiamo finalmente agire in una direzione e con uno scopo preciso.

Riconoscere

Qualche settimana fa questo giornale ha lanciato un appello (https://thedailycases.com/gli-italiani-allestero-ignoti-the-unknown-italians-overseas/) che ripetiamo ora, di istituire un premio per riconoscere finalmente quegli italiani e i loro figli e nipoti che hanno portato onore al loro paese d’origine.

Non sarà facile perché un progetto del genere non si fa solo con articoli ma con il contributo di tante persone in ogni paese dove ci sono comunità italiane.

Questo giornale ha cominciato a lavorare in questa direzione, ma in questa fase iniziale abbiamo bisogno anche di cominciare a identificare e fare conoscere gente sin d’ora, e per fare questo abbiamo bisogno del contributo anche e in modo particolare dei nostri lettori.

In fondo all’articolo c’è un indirizzo email dove potrete inviarci le vostre storie di italiani e discendenti di emigrati italiani che meritano d’essere riconosciuti nel loro paese d’origine. Non chiediamo solo i nomi ma anche di sapere cosa hanno fatto. Non cerchiamo solo storie di successo economico, in fondo il metro di giudizio del successo è anche come arricchiamo e miglioriamo la vita di tutti, e in questo noi italiani siamo, come sempre, all’avanguardia.

Inoltre, saremo felici anche di storie inviate da circoli e associazioni italiane perché anche loro hanno dato un contributo per arricchire la vita dei loro paesi di residenza.

Siamo tutti fieri delle nostre origini che hanno ispirato le imprese di ogni generazione, sia in Italia che all’estero, ma queste imprese non devono rimanere ignote. Sono parte fondamentale della nostra Storia e perciò devono essere documentate sennò, come è già capitato fin troppo spesso, rischiamo di perdere la memoria di queste imprese.

Senza la Storia non siamo niente e anche in questo la Storia di noi italiani non è seconda a nessun’altra. Allora facciamo sapere a chi pensa che siamo solo pasta e pizza che siamo molto di più di quelle due meraviglie culinarie…

The faces of Italians around the world to be recognized

Italian migrants and their descendants have distinguished themselves in all the continents and in all the branches of human life since their arrival in the new countries of residence.

 

When we talk about the Italians overseas the minds of many in Italy, too many in fact, turn to the images of the ships or maybe archive photos in black and white of Italians at the famous Ellis Island in New York that was the main door for millions looking for a new life far away from the places of birth and childhood for those who will then be buried in a country far away that they never even dreamed of when they were young.

However, if we start to think about what these many millions of Italians overseas have done over the last century and a half how many people in Italy are able to go beyond the clichés, the stereotypes and, sadly, the teasing that some do because the descendants of these migrants often know little or nothing about the country of origin of their parents, grandparents or great grandparents?

Recently a look through overseas newspapers on the internet gave us much to think about this, not only for us in the newspaper, but we dare say also for Italy in general that has too short a memory concerning our relatives and friends overseas.

The Italian and national monument

We all know one of the world’s biggest statues that is a very important monument for the United States. The Mount Rushmore monument in South Dakota shows the faces of four American Presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The intention of this monument was to praise Democracy but in a certain way the monument is also recognition of those who gave a fundamental contribution to the growth of not only the United States but also to many other countries,  the immigrants of which our relatives and friends overseas are still one of the most important groups.

For 75 years the family of Luigi Del Bianco fought to have his role as chief carver of the Mount Rushmore monument recognized. It was the monument’s designer who asked for his inclusion in the project because he had distinguished himself in other projects by the architect and the photo of Del Bianco at the head of this article is from one of these projects.

In 2006 the country’s National Park Service that manages the monument finally recognized Del Bianco’s role in the creation of this work and even his town of residence paid homage to the Italian migrant.

But in congratulating the Del Bianco family for the battle to get their grandfather’s work for this monument recognized we must ask, how many other Italians involved in the project and others of its kind were never recognized?

Italian stoneworkers were fundamental in the construction not only of monuments such as Mount Rushmore but also of parliaments, bridges and numberless public buildings around the world and sadly these contributions are unknown or have been ignored in Italy.

But if we talk only about Italian stoneworkers around the world we risk seeing only one detail of a picture that is much bigger and extraordinary that many of us imagine.

Other contributions

In fact, Italian migrants and their descendants have distinguished themselves in all the continents and in all the branches of human life since their arrival in the new countries of residence.

Once again we see in our minds the humble jobs of the first generation in each country but we do not realize that these jobs had a precise purpose, to be able to give their children and subsequently their grandchildren and great grandchildren, opportunities that were not possible in their country of origin at the time.

This first generation worked in the fields and in the big factories. Some became butchers or owners of grocery stores, maybe aimed at their countrymen in the early years that then expanded to the rest of the community. Others became carpenters, electricians and plumbers to then in turn become builders. Others worked in shops and markets and who knows how many other jobs but always with the dream of the future.

In these and many other ways the first generation became rich and not only in the financial sense. It is easy to praise who was able to build great companies as the Belgiorno-Nettis family did in Australia which saw Pope John Paul II celebrate Mass in their factory and like them others in other countries. However, in concentrating on these purely economic successes we do not see many other stories of other types of success that bear Italian names and inspiration.

Deeds

The children and descendants of Italian migrants have become singers, actors, sculptors and movie directors. Children and grandchildren of Italian migrants can be found in all fields of human life in all the countries where there are Italian communities and therefore they have had a much greater impact in their new countries of residence than we understand.

And what do we know about these children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Italian migrants? Apart from some cases of singers and movie directors and actors, who are usually American, we truly know very little.

What do we know about our relatives and friends overseas who have built important welfare, cultural and artistic organizations around the world? Once more, little or nothing. Without forgetting our authors and poets, in other languages as well. Just as we have a duty to let the world know the greatness of our Culture, we also have an obligation to let Italy know our international Italian cultural treasures

Sometimes we know of sportsmen and women of Italian origin when they come to play in Italy but we do not realize how many oriundi (people of Italian origin) have distinguished themselves in other countries.

Therefore we must not only think about this, we must finally act in one direction and with a precise purpose.

Recognition

A few weeks ago this newspaper launched an appeal (https://thedailycases.com/gli-italiani-allestero-ignoti-the-unknown-italians-overseas/) that we now repeat, to set up an award to finally recognize those Italians and their children and grandchildren who have brought honour to their country of origin. 

It will not be easy because a project such as this cannot be achieved only with articles but with the contribution of many people from every country where there are Italian communities.

This newspaper has begun to work in this direction but in this initial phase we also need to identify and to make known people, starting now, and in order to do this we also need the contribution of our readers in a particular way.

At the end of the article there is an email address where you can send your stories of Italians and descendants of Italian migrants who deserve to be recognized in their country of origin. We are not asking only for names but we also want to know what they have done. We are not looking for only stories of economic success, deep down the yardstick of success is also how we enrich and improve the lives of others and, as always, in this we Italians are in the front line.

Furthermore, we will also be happy for stories sent by Italian clubs and associations because they too have given a contribution to enriching the lives of their countries of residence.

We are all proud of our origins that have inspired deeds of every type, both in Italy and overseas, but these deeds must not remain unknown. They are an essential part of our history and therefore must be documented, otherwise, as has already happened all too often, we risk losing the memory of these deeds.

Without history we are nothing and in this too the history of we Italians is second to none. So, let us show those who think that we are only pasta and pizza that we are so much more than those two culinary marvels…
