La Cultura è un essere vivente
Anni fa, durante un convegno internazionale, un Ministro italiano ha messo in tilt i traduttori simultanei con la frase “Bisogna agire immediatamente perché siamo in piena zona Cesarini”.
Quella “zona Cesarini” ha creato problemi per i traduttori perché è una frase che solo chi segue il calcio in Italia può capire, perché Renato Cesarini era un giocatore della Juventus celebre per segnare gol negli ultimi minuti di una partita. Infatti, il Ministro voleva dire che il tempo per agire stava per finire.
Questa incidente dimostra come la Cultura, compresa la lingua, cambia nel tempo, anche nel modo meno apparente.
In questo caso, per via dello sport.
Il calcio fu introdotto in Italia da marinai inglesi e non è un caso che il primo club italiano fu il “Genoa Cricket and Football Club” fondato nel 1893, e porta ancora quel nome come vediamo nel suo sito web. E anche il Milan fu fondato come il Milan Football & Cricket Club nel 1899.
Il calcio ha veramente cambiato il paese, non solo per via del campionato nazionale, e poi i Mondiali, ma anche con l’introduzione del Totocalcio nel 1946 per cui anche “ha fatto 13” entrò nella lingua italiana per descrivere un grande colpo di fortuna.
Non solo il calcio continua a fare parte della nostra Cultura, ma è l’esempio perfetto per mostrare quel che molte persone non vogliono capire della Cultura, che, nel corso degli anni, cambia insieme al paese.
Il film “La Stranezza” del 2022 del regista Roberto Andò mostra benissimo la reazione del pubblico a Roma nel 1921 della prima serata della celebre opera teatrale “Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore” di Luigi Pirandello, che finì con lo sgomento ed i fischi.
Il pubblico di quella sera non capì d’essere stato testimone di un’opera rivoluzionaria che, pochi anni dopo, non solo fu presentata in giro per il mondo, ma addirittura valse il Premio Nobel per la Letteratura per Pirandello. E viene ancora presentata regolarmente.
Questi casi non sono che la punta dell’iceberg della Cultura italiana perché è in costante evoluzione come possiamo dimostrare con qualche altro caso.
Da almeno gli anni ’80, nell’ultima notte di ottobre i ragazzi italiani fanno il giro dei loro paesi in costume per bussare alle porte per dire “Dolcetto e scherzetto” perché, sia la televisione che il cinema, hanno introdotto nel paese l’Halloween americano, che, in fondo, non è che il discendente del “Samhain” celtico che risale al VI secondo a.C. Un festeggiamento sparito in Europa grazie alla diffusione di un’idea nuova in tutta l’Europa, la religione cristiana nelle sue diverse forme.
Infatti, il cinema e la televisione sono stati protagonisti di cambiamenti enormi nella vita sociale italiana, e non solo per avere fornito, in forme nuove, aspetti tradizionali della nostra Cultura come la lirica.
La nostra penisola, come di nuovo tutta l’Europa, vede regolarmente cambiamenti enormi con l’introduzione di idee nuove, e anche scoperte scientifiche.
Due episodi particolari del passato portarono a cambiamenti culturali enormi nel Vecchio Continente, le Crociate, e la scoperta delle Americhe. Cambiamenti che vediamo ancora oggi con il tabacco, lo zucchero, le patate, i pomodori, caffè, il cioccolato, e moltissimi altri prodotti originari di altri continenti. Senza dimenticare che i numeri che utilizziamo furono introdotti in Europa da Fibonacci nel 1202.
Anche il nostro Rinascimento ebbe effetti fortissimi grazie a quella esplosione incredibile di artisti che ispirarono il mondo, e che continuano ancora a farlo.
E questi cambi artistici continuarono con artisti come Caravaggio, Picasso, van Gogh, gli impressionisti, e molti altri che regolarmente sfidano i loro contemporanei con opere nuove e controverse.
Poi, non ci dimentichiamo anche i filosofi e gli autori che, con le loro opere, hanno esposto i problemi della nostra società, costringendoci a modificare comportamenti che facevano male ai nostri contemporanei.
Un esempio di questi comportamenti era il feudalismo sparito del tutto in Europa soltanto nel ‘900…
Inoltre, moltissime scoperte scientifiche furono accolte con le grida di chi rifiutava di accettare idee nuove, soprattutto quando erano in opposizione alle idee delle religioni di turno.
Ciascuno di questi episodi ha visto cambi enormi nella Cultura di ogni paese, senza eccezione, ma ancora oggi c’è chi rifiuta di accettare che la Cultura NON è fissa e invariata, ma è una creatura immortale che cambia continuamente per rispecchiare i cambi degli esseri umani che ne sono i veri creatori.
Difatti, l’idea di “conservare” oggigiorno aspetti falliti del passato non è che il rifiuto di accettare che certe idee, certe politiche e altri aspetti della nostra società, non hanno più posto nel nostro mondo.
Infatti, i tempi cambiano e con questi cambi cambiano anche gli uomini e le donne.
E con questo non intendiamo dire che dobbiamo accettare ogni nuova idea ciecamente.
Ogni idea nuova deve per forza essere soggetta a controlli, ma rifiutare ogni nuovo passo semplicemente perché “abbiamo sempre agito in un certo modo” non fa altro che iniziare una lotta destinata a fallire.
Purtroppo, i potenti sono quelli che più si oppongono alle idee nuove per il semplice motivo che temono di perdere il loro potere. E, troppo spesso, proprio questo è stato il motivo per le persecuzioni del passato…
Una società moderna si conosce dalla capacità di accettare i cambiamenti naturali del tempo, e chi insiste a “conversare” il vecchio non fa altre che creare le condizioni per ripetere gli sbagli del passato…
E ora il “pericolo” sono i social perché sono la prova più schiacciante che, in realtà, ci sono limiti importanti ai poteri di chi governa e, come società, non sappiamo ancora contrattare questo fenomeno globale nel modo meno nocivo per tutti…

Years ago, during an international conference, an Italian Minister caused havoc for the simultaneous interpreters with the phrase “We must act immediately because we are in the middle of the Cesarini zone”
That “Cesarini zone” caused problems for the interpreters because it is a phrase that only those who follow Italian football can understand because Renato Cesarini was a player for Juventus famous for scoring goals in the final minutes of a game. In fact, the Minister meant to say that time for action was running out.
This incident shows how Culture, including language, changes over time, even in the least apparent way.
In this case because of sport.
Football (soccer) was introduced to Italy by English sailors and it is no coincidence that the first Italian club was the “Genoa Cricket and Football Club” founded in 1983, and it still bears that name as we see on its website. And AC Milan was also founded as the Milan Football & Cricket Club in 1899.
Football really changed the country, not only because of the national championship, and then the World Cup, but even with the introduction of Totocalcio (the football pools) in 1946, so even “Ha fatto 13” (He got the top score) entered the Italian language to describe a big stroke of luck.
And not only does football continue to be part of our Culture, but it is the perfect example to show what many people refuse to understand about Culture which, over the years, changes with the country.
In the 2022 film “La Stranezza” (Strangeness) directed by Roberto Andò shows very well the reaction of the audience in Rome in 1921 for the presentation of Luigi Pirandello’s now famous play “Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore” (Six characters in search of an author) which ended in dismay and booing.
That evening the audience did not understand that it had witnessed a revolutionary work that, a few years later, was not just presented around the world, but even earned Pirandello the Nobel Prize for Literature. And it is still performed regularly.
These cases are only the tip of the iceberg of Italian Culture because it is continuously evolving as we can show with just a few more cases.
Since at least the ‘80s, on the last evening of October young children in Italy go around their towns in costumes to knock on doors to say “Dolcetto e scherzetto” (Trick or treat) because both the movies and television introduced American Halloween to the country, which, after all, was none other than the descendant of the Celtic “Samhain” that dates back to the 6th century BC. A celebration that disappeared in Europe thanks to the spread of a new idea throughout Europe, the Christian religion in its various forms.
Indeed, the movies and television have been the protagonists of enormous changes in Italy’s social life, and not only for providing, in new forms, traditional aspects of our Culture such as Opera.
Our peninsula like, again, all of Europe, regularly sees huge changes with the introduction of new ideas, and even scientific discoveries.
Two specific episodes led to enormous cultural changes in the Old World, the Crusades, and the discovery of the Americas. Changes that we still see today with tobacco, sugar, potatoes, tomatoes, coffee, chocolate, and many other products originating from other continents. Without forgetting that the numbers we use were introduced into Europe by Fibonacci in 1202.
Even our Renaissance had very strong effects thanks to that incredible explosion of artists who inspired the world, and who still continue to do so.
And these artistic changes continued with artists such as Caravaggio, Picasso, van Gogh, the Impressionists, and many others regularly challenging their contemporaries with new and controversial works.
And then, let us not forget the philosophers and the authors whose works exposed the problems of our society and forced us to change behaviours that were hurting our contemporaries.
One example of such behaviour was feudalism which totally disappeared from Europe only in the 20th century…
Moreover, a lot of scientific discoveries were greeted with the cries of those who refused to accept new ideas, especially when they were in opposition to the religion of the time.
Each one of these episodes saw enormous changes in the Culture of every country, without exception, but there are still those today who refuse to accept that Culture is NOT fixed and unchanging but is an immortal creature that is constantly changing to reflect the changes in human beings who are its real creators.
In fact, the idea of “preserving” nowadays failed aspects of the past is merely the refusal to accept that certain ideas, certain policies, and other aspects of our society, no longer have a place in our world.
Indeed, times change and with these changes so do men and women.
And by this we do not mean we should accept every new idea blindly.
Every new idea must of necessity be subject to scrutiny, but to reject every new step simply because “we have always acted in a certain way” does nothing but start a struggle destined to fail.
Unfortunately, the powerful are the ones most opposed to new ideas for the simple reason that they fear losing their power. And, too often, this has been the very reason for persecutions of the past…
A modern society can be recognized by its ability to accept the natural changes of time, those who insist on “preserving” the old are only creating the conditions to repeat the mistakes of the past…
And now the “danger” is the social media which are the most damning evidence that, in fact, there are important limits to the powers of those who govern and, as a society, we still do not know how to deal with this global phenomenon in the least harmful way for everyone…
