Il giorno dei Troll

Da tempo ormai sentiamo delle attività dei troll su internet che cercano di cambiare direzione dei discorsi su temi d’attualità.

Da tempo ormai sentiamo delle attività dei troll su internet che cercano di cambiare direzione dei discorsi su temi d’attualità. C’è il sospetto da tempo, ma una giornata passata su Facebook ha dato la prova che i troll esistono davvero e che sono molto ben organizzati.

Tristemente e tragicamente il catalizzatore per la prova è stata la morte di 17 giovani nella loro scuola negli Stati Uniti.

È tutto iniziato lunedì in tarda serata sulla pagina di una rivista australiana che ha messo online il filmato di studenti della Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida negli Stati Uniti che protestavano contro le leggi sulle armi dopo la morte di 17 loro coetanei, che erano stati uccisi a scuola da un ex alunno. Avevo già visto come siti americani che hanno mostrato il filmato sono stati bombardati da attivisti pro armi.

Avevo appena messo su un commento quando ho visto SDF, apparentemente un “australiano”, fare il commento che anche l’Australia ha avuto stragi simili dopo la strage di Port Arthur in Tasmania nel 1996 nella quale 35 turisti sono stati uccisi, tragico episodio che ha portato all’approvazione delle leggi anti armi che molti americani utilizzano come il modello da seguire nel loro paese. Gli ho chiesto immediatamente di elencarle. L’elenco è apparso dopo pochissimi minuti e questo ha dato inizio ai primi sospetti.

Così è iniziato uno scambio durante il quale molti mi hanno dato appoggio, ma nessuno ha fatto altrettanto per lui. Quando ho controllato il suo profilo i suoi link erano tutti per gruppi pro armi e politici e gruppi conservatori. Questo è stato rafforzato quando lui ha accusato un altro utente d’essere “comunista” per la sua opposizione. Allora ho cominciato a chiedere a SDF riguardo al finanziamento della NRA (National Rifle Association, il lobby pro armi) statunitense a gruppi australiani utilizzatori di armi, un fatto riportato più volte nella stampa australiana. Quando gli ho fatto domande dirette ha evitato di rispondere, anche quando gli ho chiesto di rispondere “si o no” e anche altri utenti gli hanno chiesto di rispondere. Quando sono andato a dormire era ancora sulla pagina a litigare.

Il passaggio del bastone
Al mio risveglio la mattina dopo (abito in Italia) ho controllato i messaggi le notifiche che hanno messo in evidenza che SDF era ancora in linea e un controllo veloce ha dimostrato che aveva continuato per ben undici ore. Ho deciso di vedere come sarebbe finita.

Ho ripreso il filo con lui per un paio di ore finché non si è fermato, dopo di che è stato rimpiazzato da utente americano dopo utente americano che si opponevano alle leggi anti armi e persino da attivisti antiaborto che volevano sfruttare l’occasione per predicare le loro cause. È successo così anche su un altro sito che seguivo.

Tutti gli americani utilizzavano lo stesso linguaggio, di nuovo con accuse di “comunisti” ad alcuni degli oppositori più accaniti, ma di solito un parere opposto era accolto con scherno, statistiche false e bugie vere e proprie. A un punto una partecipante americana che dichiarava di non essere mai stata in Australia continuamente dipingeva l’Australia come un paese insicuro con una criminalità diffusissima secondo i “siti dei fatti delle armi” (finanziate dalla NRA…), tutto malgrado le reazioni divertite dei veri utenti australiani.

Quando mi sono alzato il giorno dopo ho trovato il cosiddetto australiano SDF di nuovo in azione, sempre sprezzante verso chiunque si opponeva a lui, di nuovo senza un americano in vista. La sua reazione finale ci ha fornito la prova di quel che avevamo capito il giorno prima.

Dopo un commento sarcastico nei miei riguardi ho deciso di svelargli che difatti scrivo per un sito giornalistico bilingue e che  partecipavo per curiosità e che lui effettivamente mi ha mostrato che i troll agiscono davvero su Facebook per le lobby americane delle armi,  e ho ringraziato per avermi dato l’ispirazione per il prossimo articolo. Minuti dopo ha cancellato lo scambio. Con quella azione ha confermato che il suo ruolo non era per interesse personale, ma per appoggiare una causa.

Russia
Sia se SDF sia davvero australiano, oppure un Americano che fingeva d’esserlo, anche se il suo linguaggio favorisce la seconda ipotesi, ma l’incidente mette le notizie che seguiamo dall’estero a livello internazionale da un anno e mezzo in un’altra luce. Il ruolo della Russia nell’elezione di Donald Trump come Presidente degli Stati Uniti nel 2016 è ora soggetto a varie indagini di alto livello nel paese.

Chiunque segue i social media ha notato che il mio scambio con SDF non è raro. Qualsiasi soggetto di grande interesse attira una vasta gamma di punti di vista e la campagna elettorale presidenziale americana,  di conseguenza la presidenza di Trump, sono casi del genere. Questo infatti è il modello che lo scambio australiano ha seguito.

Qualsiasi lettore attento poteva vedere che certe frasi ed espressioni erano ripetute continuamente. Il comportamento della minoranza vocale diventava acceso, cercando di smentire commenti e persone, fornendo fatti falsi per “dimostrare” di avere  ragione. Inoltre, questo comportamento incoraggia coloro che hanno idee simili e li fa diventare ancora più convinti. Ma ci vuole poco per capire se il troll putativo sia una persona vera oppure un’identità falsa.

Spesso i troll hanno profili generici con pochi dettagli e origini apparentemente innocue. Generalmente chi condivide i punti di vista promossi spesso, come il caso del vago SDF, hanno profili personali con link alle pagine “mi piace” che svelano le loro preferenze e spesso i loro pregiudizi, come il caso dei “nazionalisti” che spesso hanno link a siti anti musulmani per rafforzare il loro messaggio.

Influenza
In breve, questo è il compito che i troll svolgono e in effetti questo è quel che le accuse e le indagini sull’elezione americana dimostrano sempre di più.

Capiscono che la gente tende a credere qualsiasi cosa che confermi i loro pregiudizi. Gli agenti stranieri, che agiscono in quel che alcuni americani ora chiamano una guerra informatica e attacchi informatici sul paese, non hanno bisogno di falsificare il voto alle urne. Semplicemente devono far crescere la sfiducia verso il candidato che vogliono che perda,  abbastanza da spingere il voto verso altri candidati e non necessariamente verso il candidato che gli agenti vogliono che vinca. Infatti, l’intenzione  dell’uso di “fake news” in queste campagne è discreditare candidati

Queste tattiche hanno avuto molto più successo di quel che gli agenti potevano aspettare perché Donald Trump ha ottenuto soltanto il 38% del voto popolare e le vittorie nei collegi elettorali, i “Grandi Elettori”, negli stati marginali hanno assicurato che Trump fosse  il 45° Presidente degli Stati Uniti.

In giro per il mondo i paesi cercano modi per opporsi a queste interferenze nelle loro campagne elettorali. Infatti, tali attacchi sono accaduti nella campagna presidenziale francese e ci sono accuse di attività di troll stranieri a favore di un gruppo di opposizione nelle elezioni italiane, ma nessuno sa se sia per favorire la vittoria, oppure per cercare di indebolire chiunque vincerà le elezioni il prossimo 4 marzo.

La soluzione sembrerebbe educare la gente a riconoscere le “notizie false” e capire le manipolazioni. Ma la risposta vera non è cosi semplice perché implica cambiare un fortissimo e primitivo aspetto del carattere umano, quello di opporci in automatico a quel che non ci piace. Questa è la vera sfida che la società moderna deve prendere seriamente.

For some time now we have been hearing about the activities of trolls on the internet that try and change direction on discussions on current themes. The suspicion has been there for some time, but a day spent of Facebook gave us proof that the trolls really exist and that they are highly organized.

Sadly and tragically the catalyst for the proof was the death of 17 young people at a school in the United States.

It all began late Monday night on the Facebook page of an Australian publication that showed a film clip of students of Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the United States protesting gun control laws after 17 of their fellow students were recently killed at school by a former student. I had already seen how American sites with similar clips had been bombarded by pro gun activists.

I had put up a comment when I saw SDF, a supposedly “Australian” user, make a comment that even Australia has had gun massacres after the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania in 1996 in which 35 tourists were killed that led to the gun laws that many Americans use as the example for their country to follow. I immediately asked him to list them. Suspiciously the list appeared after only a few minutes and that led to some initial suspicions.

So began the exchange in which others supported my line, but none supported his. When I checked his profile the links were all with pro gun groups and conservative politicians and groups. This was reinforced when SDF accused another user for being “communist” for opposing his views. I then began to query SDF about the American NRA funding Australian shooting groups, a fact frequently reported by the Australian media. When asked directly he avoided the question, even when asked to say yes or no to the question and urged to do so by others. When I went to bed he was still arguing.

Passing the baton
When I woke up next morning (I am based in Italy)  and checked for messages my notifications indicated  that he was still on line and a quick check showed that he had continued the exchanges for over 11 hours. I then decided to see where it would go.

I continued with him for another couple of hours until he stopped after which his place was taken by American user after American user who opposed gun laws and even American anti abortion activists who wanted to use the opportunity to preach their cause. This also happened on another stream that I was following.

The Americans all used similar language, again with the accusation of “communists” to some of the more vehement opponents but any differing view was normally met by derision, false statistics and outright lies. At one stage one American participant who stated she had never been to Australia continuously painted Australia as an unsafe county with widespread crime in the street according to the “gun facts site” (funded by the NRA…), this despite the amused reactions of the real Australian users.

Again when I woke up next day I found so-called Australian SDF back in action, always derisive and sarcastic against all those who opposed him, again with no Americans in sight. His final reaction was the proof of what most of us had understood the day before.

At his latest sarcastic comment directed to me, I decided to reveal to him that in fact I write for a news site and that I was participating out of curiosity and that he had shown that effectively trolls do act on Facebook for the American gun lobby and I thanked him for giving me the inspiration for my next article. Two minutes later he deleted the stream that I was following. With that one simple action he confirmed that his role was not self interest, but in support for a cause.

Russia
I do not know if SDF was truly Australian, or an American pretending to be one, although his use of language tended to favour the latter hypothesis, but the incident puts another light on the news that we have all been following internationally for nearly a year and a half now. The role of Russia in the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States in 2016 and now the subject of a number of high level investigations in the country.

Anyone who follows the Social media knows that my exchange with SDF is not rare. Any subject of major interest attracts a wide of views and personalities and the American Presidential campaign and the subsequent Trump Presidency are cases in point. This in fact is the model that the Australian exchange took.

Any attentive reader would see that the same phrases and expressions were repeated continuously. The behaviour of a vocal few became inflamed, trying to discredit comments and people, supplying false facts to “prove” that they are in the right. This also encourages those that share these views and make them even more vocal. But it takes little to see if the potential troll is a real person or a fake identity.

The trolls often have generic profiles with few general details and apparently innocuous backgrounds. Those who generally share the views being promoted often, as in the case of the elusive SDF, have personal profiles show links to “liked” pages which reveal their preferences and often their prejudices, as in the case of “nationalists” who often have links to anti Muslim sites to reinforce their message.

Influence
In short this is the tasks that the trolls carry out and this is effectively what the accusations and investigations on the election campaign are showing more and more.

They understand that people tend to believe anything that confirms their own prejudices. The foreign agents acting in what some Americans define as a cyberwar and cyberattacks on the country did not need to falsify the votes at the ballot box. They simply had to increase the distrust towards the candidate they wished to be defeated enough to push people to vote for another candidate and not necessarily for the candidate the agents wanted to win. In fact, the use of “fake news” in these campaigns is intended to discredit candidates.

These tactics succeeded much more than the agents ever expected because Donald Trump only received only 38% of the popular vote and 3,000,000 votes less than Democrat candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Electoral College wins in the marginal states ensured that Trump became the 45^th President of The United States.

Countries around the world are now trying to find the ways to oppose this interference in their election campaigns. In fact, such attacks occurred in the French Presidential election and there are accusations that the activity of foreign based trolls are favouring an opposition political party in the Italian national elections, but nobody knows if this is to ensure their victory, or to try and weaken whoever wins the election on March 4^th next.

The answer would seem to be educating people so they recognize the “fake news” and understand the manipulation. But the true answer is not so easy because it involves changing a very strong and primal aspect of human nature, to automatically oppose those they do not like. This is a true challenge that modern Society must take very seriously.
