Before it’s too late

We must act to protect our fundamental human rights, to protect the constitutions, to defend a future that is not colonized before it is there

We need the Internet and related services, no doubt about it.  But we are reaching a critical point. Either we will win the battle for an ethical internet or we will be annihilated by our own lust for power, control and technology. I am convinced that what we share and use today will change in the years to come. Our ability to survive will surprise us, I don’t know how but we have no choice, and this is one of the best incentives. I read an article by Tim Berners Lee, professor at MIT and Oxford better known to the general public as the inventor of the World Wide Web.  I read an article by Tim Berners Lee, professor at MIT and Oxford better known to the general public as the inventor of the World Wide Web. Like many of my generation (born 1968) he believed that the web would be this fantastic and democratic place, made to serve mankind for social and “open source” projects or as Wikipedia, Openstreetmap. Things as we know thirty years later are very different. The degree of manipulation, misinformation is very high. Hackers strike relentlessly. Governments and institutions linked to them on the one hand try to control and regulate, on the other to exploit and manage. There is a grey area made up of large multinationals and small realities that manipulate, sell, steal and cross out our data thanks to increasingly sophisticated programs and big data. The result is a series of attacks on the true democratic heart of nations, coups d’état in which technocracies subvert the rules thanks to predictive and behaviour-changing programs.

I believe we are now close to a turning point, we must act to protect our fundamental human rights, to protect the constitutions, to defend a future that is not colonised before it is there. I believe it is a process that requires the joint effort of individuals and social groups, platforms and governments. We have failed before, but this gives us a chance to see the mistakes and to correct them. Tim Berners Lee, indicates a solution, a Web Contract, a global action plan carried out by some governments, entrepreneurs, platforms and individual web users. The Contract for the web www.contractfortheweb.org is certainly a starting point and we should really promote this idea that if signed will have the power to restore clarity, legitimacy, ethics. We must do it for us and for “our children”, for the generations to come, for those who still do not realize the danger of this fantastic tool. It will oblige governments and institutions to be more transparent in making public the actions taken and to stop breaking constitutions so casually. Political campaigns to be consistent and not based on disinformation and manipulation. The big platforms will have to stop selling your data and managing your profiles at will. The tools are now up to us.
