Presidente Mattarella e la lingua italiana come mezzo di coesione
Negli ultimi due articoli, link sopra, abbiamo trattato, nel primo, l’aspetto di doppia cittadinanza, e poi, nel secondo, alcune considerazioni sul “l’italianità” in seguito alle recenti modifiche alla legge di cittadinanza ora in Parlamento.
Naturalmente, la lingua italiana fa parte integrale dell’italianità dell’individuo, però, vogliamo riportare due commenti del Presidente della Repubblica Italiana, Sergio Mattarella, in cui esprime pensieri profondi sull’importanza della lingua italiana che, nell’umile parere del sottoscritto, hanno un valore enorme in termini della grandissima comunità italiana in giro per il mondo che, grazie alle molte ondate della nostra emigrazione nel corso di più di 150 anni, ora conta circa 90 milioni di emigrati italiani e discendenti di emigrati italiani, cioè, circa una volta e mezzo la popolazione attuale del paese.
Per i nostri lettori all’estero, bisogna dire che il Presidente della Repubblica rappresenta l’unità del nostro paese, per cui la sua figura istituzionale rappresenta anche gli italiani all’estero.
In effetti, con i suoi pensieri, il Presidente Mattarella fa capire a tutti, sia in Italia che all’estero, l’importanza della lingua italiana per mettere insieme le comunità italiane in ogni continente per formare una grande comunità mondiale composta da emigrati e discendenti di emigrati italiani, che parlano moltissime lingue nei loro paesi, ma che hanno tutti un’unica lingua in comune, e questa è proprio la nostra lingua nazionale.
Il 3 aprile scorso, durante la cerimonia per celebrare il 40° anniversario della Comunità Radiotelevisiva Italofona) il Presidente ha detto, “L’italiano è, oggi fra le lingue più studiate al mondo e le iniziative promosse per celebrare la nascita della Comunità Radiotelevisiva Italofona possono essere occasione proficua di riflessione per affrontare l’impegno, più che mai attuale, di diffonderne la conoscenza, incrementando le opportunità di dialogo”. E a queste parole dobbiamo aggiungere quel che il Presidente Mattarella aveva detto due mesi prima.
Difatti, nel suo discorso in occasione della seconda edizione del Festival “La Lingua Madre – La Lingua che conviene” nella Sala Capitolare del Senato organizzato dall’AIIC, Associazione Internazionale Interpreti di Conferenza – Regione Italia, il 21 febbraio scorso, in occasione della Giornata internazionale della lingua madre, celebrazione indetta dall’UNESCO per promuovere il multilinguismo, il Presidente ha detto, “La lingua italiana racchiude valori identitari in cui si riflettono tradizioni, costumi e le culture che uniscono la nostra comunità. È un intenso elemento di coesione, generatore di quel senso di appartenenza che accomuna anche i tanti connazionali all’estero e quanti riconoscono nella lingua e nella cultura italiane un valore universale”.
Le parole del Presidente Mattarella sono importantissime proprio per capire che, a differenza di quella minoranza ignorante in Italia che va sui social per deridere le usanze e l’italiano semplice degli oriundi, come anche una parte della nostra burocrazia nella Farnesina che mantiene contatti con gli italiani all’estero che disprezzano gli oriundi, che ci sono molti in Italia che vogliono avvicinare gli emigrati ed i discendenti al loro paese di origine, partendo dal Presidente della Repubblica.
Difatti, i nostri parenti e amici all’estero parlano moltissime lingue, cioè, quelle dei loro paesi di residenza e/o nascita, ma hanno soltanto una lingua in comune, l’italiano, oppure un dialetto secondo le regioni d’origine di ogni individuo. Ma, per motivi cha abbiamo spiegato spesso in questa rubrica “Italiani nel mondo”, pochi conoscono bene la lingua che li definisce.
Essendo nato e cresciuto all’estero, capisco benissimo i timori di chi in ogni paese potrebbe aver paura di imparare una lingua nuova, anche a una certa età, ma è solo nell’imparare una lingua che ti rendi conto quanto ti arricchisce, perché apre porte a un nuovo mondo composto da autori, cantanti, film, e attori nuovi, e molto spesso esperienze impossibili nella lingua del tuo paese.
Per spiegare vorrei raccontare un’esperienza personale. Quando andavo a scuola in Australia negli anni ‘60 e ‘70 durante le vacanze estive vedevo i film di don Camillo con Fernandel e Gino Cervi alla televisione, e piacevano anche ai coetanei non-italiani, ovviamente doppiati in inglese.
Un giorno ho trovati i libri di Giovanni Guareschi, tradotti in inglese, nella biblioteca della scuola e li ho letti tutti, godendoli moltissimo. Perciò, quando ho iniziato a studiare formalmente l’italiano ho deciso di rileggerli nella loro versione originale e li ho goduti ancora di più, per un motivo molto semplice, c’erano sfumature nei libri che non potevano essere tradotte, almeno in inglese…
E man mano che migliorava il mio italiano, mi rendevo conto che nel primo viaggio in Italia a 16 anni avevo capito pochissimo di quel che vedevo attorno e me, non solo alla tv, o al cinema quelle volte che ci sono andato, ma anche nei discorsi di famiglia…
Perciò, i figli e discendenti dei nostri emigrati potranno capire bene il loro passato soltanto tramite la nostra lingua.
Prima di concludere, vorrei ripetere le parole del Presidente Mattarella perché sono verissime e dovrebbero essere alla base di qualsiasi iniziativa di insegnare la lingua italiana agli oriundi.
“La lingua italiana racchiude valori identitari in cui si riflettono tradizioni, costumi e le culture che uniscono la nostra comunità. È un intenso elemento di coesione, generatore di quel senso di appartenenza che accomuna anche i tanti connazionali all’estero e quanti riconoscono nella lingua e nella cultura italiane un valore universale”.
Difatti, nel senso più ampio, “la nostra comunità” NON comprende solo chi abita in Italia, ma TUTTE le comunità italiane nel mondo perché anche loro sono di origini italiane e il Presidente Mattarella ha dimostrato che capisce benissimo l’importanza di creare una comunità italiana mondiale, e non solo gruppi isolati in innumerevoli città e paesi sparsi per tutto il mondo.
E se siamo italiani, o discendenti di italiani, c’è solo un elemento che crea la coesione necessaria per la formazione di una vera comunità italiana mondiale, la lingua italiana.
Allora, per questa ragione ho un motivo in più per ringraziare il Presidente Mattarella per il suo servizio al paese e a tutti gli italiani nel mondo.

In the last two articles, links above, we dealt, in the first with the issue of dual citizenship and then, in the second, with some considerations on “Italianness” following the recent changes to Italy’s citizenship law now in Parliament.
Of course, the Italian language is an integral part of the Italianness of an individual, however, we want to quote two comments by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in which he expresses profound thoughts on the importance of the Italian language which, in my humble opinion, is of enormous value in terms of the very large Italian community around the world that, thanks to the many waves of our emigration over more than 150 years, now numbers about 90 million Italian emigrants and descendants of Italian emigrants, about one and a half times the country’s current population.
For our readers overseas, it must be said that the President of the Italian Republic represents the unity of our country, so his institutional figure also represents Italians overseas.
Indeed, with his thoughts. President Mattarella makes everyone, both in Italy and overseas, realize the importance of the Italian language for bringing together the Italian communities in every continent to form a great worldwide community composed of emigrants and descendants of Italian immigrants who speak many languages in their countries, but who have all one language in common, and this is precisely our national language.
On April 3rd last, during a ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Comunità Radiotelevisiva Italofona (Italian language Radio and Television Community) President Mattarella said, “Today, Italian is one of the most studied languages in the world and the initiatives promoted to celebrate the birth of the Comunità Radiotelevisiva Italofona can be a fruitful opportunity for reflection on the commitment, more topical than ever, to spread knowledge of it, increasing opportunities for dialogue”. And to these words, we must add what President Mattarella had said two months earlier.
In fact, in his speech on the occasion of the “La Lingua Madre – La Lingua che conviene” (The Mother Tongue – The language that fits) in the Capitular Hall of the Senate organized by the AIIC, Associazione Internazionale Interpreti di Conferenza – Regione Italia (International Association of Conference Interpreters – Italian Region), on February 21st last on the occasion on the UNESCO International Mother Language Day, to promote multilingualism, the President said, “The Italian language encapsulates identity values in which traditions, customs and cultures that unite our community are reflected. It is an intense element of cohesion, generating that sense of belonging that also unites our many fellow countrymen and women overseas, and those who recognize in the Italian language and culture a universal value”.
President Mattarella’s words are very important precisely for understanding that, unlike that ignorant minority in Italy that goes onto the social media to mock the habits and simple Italian of the oriundi (Overseas born Italians), as well as a part of our bureaucracy in the Foreign Affairs Ministry that maintains contacts with the Italians overseas that despises the oriundi, there are many people in Italy who want to bring the emigrants and the descendants closer to their country of origin, starting with the President of the Italian Republic.
In fact, our relatives and friends overseas speak many languages, that is, those of their countries of residence and/or birth, but they have only one common language, Italian, or a dialect depending on the region of origin of each individual. But, for reasons that we have often explained in this “Italiani nel mondo” (Italians in the world) column, few know the language that defines them.
Having been born and raised overseas, I fully understand the fears of those in any country who might be afraid of learning a new language, even at a certain age, but it is only on learning a language that you realize how much it enriches you because it opens doors to a new world made up of new authors, singers, films and actors, and very often experiences impossible in the language of your own country.
To explain this, I would like to relate a personal experience. When I went to school in Australia in the ‘60s and ‘70s, during the summer holidays I used to watch the “don Camillo” films with Fernandel and Gino Cervi on television, and even non-Italian peers liked them, obviously dubbed into English.
One day, I found the books by Giovanni Guareschi that they were based on, translated into English, in the school’s library and I read them all, enjoying them very much. So, when I began to study Italian formally, I decided to reread them in their original version and I enjoyed them even more, for a very simple reason, there were nuances in the books that could not be translated, at least into English.
And, as my Italian improved, I realized that on my first trip to Italy when I was 16, I had understood very little of what I saw around me, not only on tv, or at the movies those times I went, but also family discussions…
Therefore, for the children and descendants of our emigrants, they will only understand their past well through our language.
Before concluding I would like to repeat President Mattarella’s words, because they are very true, and they should be the basis for any initiative to teach the Italian language to oriundi.
“The Italian language encapsulates identity values in which traditions, customs and cultures that unite our community are reflected. It is an intense element of cohesion, generating that sense of belonging that also unites our many fellow countrymen and women overseas, and those who recognize in the Italian language and culture a universal value”.
In fact, in the broadest sense, “our community” does NOT only mean those who live in Italy, but ALL Italian communities in the world because they too are of Italian origin and President Mattarella has shown that he understands very well the importance of creating a worldwide Italian community and not just as isolated groups in countless cities and towns around the world.
And if we are Italians, or descendants of Italians, there is only one element that creates the cohesion necessary for the formation of a true worldwide Italian community, the Italian language.
All the more reason then, to thank President Mattarella for his service to the country and to all Italians around the world.
