I Danni Culturali del Covid in Italia

Dai titolone dell’articolo sarebbe facile pensare ai danni culturali creati in Italia dalle stagioni saltate della lirica a La Scala a Milano, oppure all’Arena di Verona e le chiusure dei musei e le gallerie d’Arte di tutto il paese. Ma nel fare questo pensiero faremmo lo stesso sbaglio di molti addetti ai lavori culturali nel paese, di considerare la nostra Cultura solo in base alla cosiddetta “Alta Cultura”.

La Cultura d’Italia è il Patrimonio Culturale più grande del mondo ANCHE perché comprende un numero e varietà di manifestazioni e attività che pochi in Italia apprendono e apprezzano, tantomeno il potenziale pubblico internazionale che verrebbe nel paese se solo sapesse di loro. Purtroppo, il Covid-19 ha creato danni anche a queste manifestazioni e attività al punto che anche se, fino a marzo scorso facevano parte integrale della vita di quasi tutti gli italiani, in molti casi ora rischiano di sparire nel prossimo futuro, con conseguenze importanti anche per l’economia e la qualità di vita del paese.

La Cultura d’Italia comprende manifestazioni e attività come i Pali che si svolgono in molte città e non solo a Siena, altre sfilate e rievocazioni storiche, sfilate di Carnevale come quella di Viareggio, feste paesane, sagre e altre manifestazioni che mettono in mostra nel miglior modo possibile i prodotti che hanno reso la nostra cucina una della più importanti del mondo. A queste attività aggiungiamo manifestazioni atletiche/sportive come maratone e ultramaratone, manifestazioni di Motorsport come l’Historic Minardi Day a Imola e la Targa Florio in Sicilia, la feste religiose dei Santi Patroni e Madonne di tutto il paese che arricchiscono la vita dei nostri concittadini in ogni modo possibile. Sotto mostriamo la rievocazione storica dell’assedio del castello di Gradara nelle Marche e una parte di una manifestazione importante della Sardegna con i suoi caratteristici Mamuthones.

Queste manifestazioni spesso coinvolgono grandi numeri di persone di tutto il paese, non solo per partecipare alle sfilate, ecc., ma soprattutto per la logistica e, ancora più importante, per le ricerche e la produzione dei costumi che sono vere opere d’arte riproducendo fedelmente i vestiti e anche le armature, le armi e persino strumenti musicali del passato che altrimenti sarebbero rimasti solo nei libri di Storia invece di fare ancora parte della vita degli italiani.

Per questi motivi il lavoro di preparazione per la manifestazioni e le attività non si svolgono nel corso di settimane prima, ma in quasi tutti i casi continuano per tutto l’anno perché i partecipanti devono essere capaci per fare davvero la parte dei protagonisti degli avvenimenti storici che hanno ispirato i Pali e le altre manifestazioni.

Anche nel caso delle sagre e le feste paesane le preparazioni iniziano molto prima perché la preparazione di molti degli ingredienti, a partire dalle paste ripiene e non solo, tutte rigorosamente fatte a mano, inizia mesi prima e anche queste serate di lavoro creano un’atmosfere comunitaria e di amicizia che migliora la vita di chi ne fa parte.

Però queste manifestazioni hanno anche un ruolo importante nella vita quotidiana dei paesi. In moltissimi casi gli incassi non solo pagano le preparazioni, i costumi, ecc., ma una parte sensibile è data alle scuole locali e anche a gruppi di assistenza sociale, ecc., della comunità per assicurare fondi per permettere loro di assistere i bisognosi e anche i malati dei paesi.

Purtroppo questi 18 mesi del Covid hanno avuto un effetto devastante per queste feste. Quasi tutti hanno dovuto saltare il 2020 e quest’anno, se si svolgeranno, devono essere in forma ridotta in base ai prerequisiti sanitari. Nei casi delle manifestazioni più importanti, come il Palio di Siena, il loro futuro è assicurato, ma in non pochi casi ci vorranno anni per essere di nuovo possibili nel formato tradizionale ed in non pochi casi rischiano di sparire del tutto.

Questo è un danno enorme per il paese, non solo nel senso economico, ma nella qualità della vita, come anche un danno enorme alla nostra Cultura.

Perciò, sarebbe bello se il Governo, sia a livello nazionale che regionale, si mettesse a lavoro per assicurare che queste attività possano riprendersi il più presto possibile perché la perdita di anche una di queste manifestazioni è una ferita enorme alla comunità.

Però, c’è un modo particolare con cui questi governi possono assistere queste attività nel rilanciarsi alla grande nel futuro: includerli nelle promozioni culturali del paese perché ciascuna dimostra una faccia d’Italia che in quasi ogni caso, tranne i più famosi, non sono conosciute non solo fuori dai confini del paese, ma non raramente persino fuori i confini provinciali.

Nel promuovere queste manifestazioni all’estero ai livelli che meritano faremmo vedere al mondo che l’Italia ha molto di più da offrire ai turisti internazionali che musei e gallerie d’Arte, che spesso li obbligano a fare molte ore in fila ad alta stagione.

Infatti, la nostra Cultura ha molto di più da offrire al mondo che il Davide di Michelangelo, il Colosseo, e le altre immagini standard che utilizziamo nelle nostre promozioni culturali e ne abbiamo per tutti i gusti, dall’Alta Cultura agli sportivi.

La nostra Cultura ha subìto grandi danni in questi 18 mesi, ma, nell’includere queste manifestazioni e attività finora ignorate dalle nostre autorità culturali come promozioni importanti, potremmo dare un contributo al rilancio del paese perché la nostra Cultura non deve essere limitata soltanto a un élite capace di capire “l’Alta Cultura”, ma deve appartenere a tutti dimostrando che  siamo in grado di soddisfare ogni tipo di gusto culturale possibile perché solo noi abbiamo questa varietà enorme di forme di Cultura.

Ma solo se finalmente riconosciamo che ogni forma di Cultura è valida e non solo una piccola parte…

 

 

Covid’s harm to Italy’s Culture

 

From the article’s headline it would be easy to think of the harm to Culture in Italy created by the missed seasons of Opera at Milan’s La Scala or Verona’s Arena and the closure of the museums and art galleries throughout the country. But by thinking in this way we would make the same mistake as many of the experts of Culture in the country, considering our Culture only on the basis of the so-called “High Culture”.

Italy’s Culture is the world’s greatest Cultural Heritage ALSO because it includes a number and variety of events and activities that few in Italy comprehend and appreciate, much less the potential international public that would come to the country if only it knew about them. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has caused harm to these events and activities as well, to the point that, even if until March last year they formed an integral part of the lives of almost all Italians, in many cases they now risk disappearing in the near future with major consequences also for the economy and the country’s quality of life.

Italy’s Culture includes events and activities such as the Palios held in many cities and not just Siena, of other historical parades and re-enactments, of the Carnevale parades such as the one in Viareggio, of town sagre (festivals) and other events that put on show in the best way possible the products that have made our cuisine one of the most important in the world. To these activities we add athletic/sporting events such as marathons and ultra marathons, Motorsport events such as the Historic Minardi Day at Imola and the Targa Florio in Sicily, the religious feasts of town/city Patron Saints and Madonnas throughout the country that enrich the lives of our fellow countrymen and women in every way possible. These events often involve large numbers of people in all the country, not only participating in the parades, etc, but especially in the logistics and, even more importantly, the research and the production of the costumes that are real works of art in themselves that faithfully reproduce the clothes and also the armour, weapons and even musical instruments of the past that otherwise would exist only in history books instead of still being a part of the lives of Italians.

For these reasons the preparations for the events and activities is not carried out only during the preceding weeks but in almost all the cases they continue throughout the year because the participants must be able to truly play the role of the protagonists of the historical events that inspired the Palios and the other events.

Even in the case of the sagre and town feasts the preparations begin long before because the preparation of many of the ingredients, starting with the stuffed pasta and not only, all strictly handmade, begins months before and even these evenings of work create an atmosphere of community and friendship that improves the lives of those involved.

But these events also play a major role in the daily lives of the towns. In many cases the income not only pays for the preparations, the costumes, etc, but a sizable part goes to the local schools and also social welfare groups, etc, of the community to ensure funds that will allow them to help the needy and even the sick people of the towns.

Unfortunately, these 18 months of Covid have had a devastating effect on these feasts. Almost all have had to skip 2020 and this year, if they are carried out, they must be in a reduced form according to health requirements. In the cases of the most important events, such as Siena’s Palio, their future is assured but not infrequently it will take years to be presented in their traditional format and in not a few cases they risk disappearing completely.

This is a huge harm to the country, not only economically but also in the quality of life, as well as creating great harm to our Culture.

Therefore it would be good in the Government, at both nationally and regionally, would get to work to ensure that these activities could resume as quickly as possible because the loss of even one of these events is a huge wound to the community.

However, there is one particular way with which these governments could assist these activities to relaunch themselves in a major way in the future. By including them in the cultural promotions of the country because each one of them shows a face of Italy that in almost every case, except the most famous, is unknown not only outside the country’s borders but not infrequently even outside the borders of the province.

In promoting these events overseas at the levels they deserve we would show the world that Italy has much more to offer international tourists than museums and art galleries that often force them to wait many for hours in a queue in the high season.

Indeed, our Culture has much more to offer the world than Michelangelo’s David and the other standard images that we use in our cultural promotion and we have something for every taste, from High Culture to sports.

Our Culture has suffered great harm in these 18 months but, by including these events and activities that until now have been ignored by our cultural authorities as major promotions, we would give an important contribution to the revival of the country because our Culture must not be limited only to an elite that is able to understand “High Culture” but it belongs to everyone and that we are able to satisfy every type of cultural taste possible because only we have this enormous variety of forms of Culture.

But only if we finally recognize that every form of Culture is valid and not only a small part…
