Le cose cambiano in fretta, il cielo di notte non è più lo stesso

Quando la nostra specie ha cominciato a erudirsi ha guardato al cielo per capire le stagioni, per orientarsi, per seguire il ciclo vitale della natura e le maree. Presto non sarà più possibile o almeno diventerà molto più complesso. Sarà difficile sondare lo spazio e capire cosa succede al di là dell’atmosfera terrestre. Le cose cambiano in fretta, il cielo di notte non è più lo stesso, niente di che potremmo pensare, vero? Nel corso della storia, solo stati lanciati circa 8.000 satelliti, di cui circa 2.000 attualmente attivi. Ma gli astronomi hanno avvertito che il numero di satelliti inviati in orbita è cresciuto negli ultimi mesi in maniera esponenziale e rischia di “tagliarci fuori dal cosmo”. La previsione è arrivata un giorno dopo che SpaceX, (Elon Musk), ha lanciato 60 satelliti contemporaneamente nell’ambito di un progetto per inviarne fino a 42.000 nello spazio nei prossimi anni. Questi satelliti si sono rivelati molto più riflettenti di quanto chiunque, anche gli ingegneri di SpaceX, si aspettassero. Ora altre aziende si stanno preparando a colonizzare l’orbita bassa della terra con i loro satelliti. Il risultato? Non lo sappiamo, ma non ci si può aspettare nulla di buono e questo si rivela essere un grosso problema per astronomi e scienziati.

Inoltre, i satelliti disgregati, o quello che ne rimane, sono già un grosso problema, soprattutto nell’orbita bassa, dove la rete Starlink di SpaceX è in fase di dispiegamento. L’Agenzia spaziale europea ha stimato a gennaio che ci sono quasi un milione di pezzi di spazzatura spaziale più grandi di un centimetro (circa tre ottavi di pollice) che circondano il pianeta. Ma che diritto ha un singolo paese, o una singola azienda, di inquinare lo spazio sopra di noi? Come tante volte in passato, ancora una volta gli esseri umani o meglio alcuni esseri umani, stanno procedendo senza regole, senza rispetto, senza etica. Ancora una volta, le leggi che stiamo cercando di far rispettare nel mondo “civilizzato” non sono per le frontiere, non sono per un’élite dominante. Vogliamo ripiegare? Dovremmo arrenderci? O è qualcosa di più di una semplice obsoleta mappa del cielo che stiamo perdendo? Come sta accadendo con internet che si è trasformato in un sistema di controllo di massa e con la digitalizzazione e la frammentazione del nostro mondo, scopriremo presto che tutto questo “vivere e speculare tecnologico” ha un conto salato da pagare. Stiamo perdendo il futuro, stiamo perdendo la dignità e la capacità di reagire e di lottare per ciò che è giusto, etico, rispettoso. I diritti umani non possono essere venduti per profitto o perderemo l’essenza stessa, lo spirito, la ragione che ci mantengono vivi.

Things are changing fast, the sky at night does not look the same anymore

When our species began to erudite itself it looked to the sky to understand the seasons, to orient itself, to follow the life cycle of nature and the tides. Soon it will no longer be possible or at least it will become much more complex. It will be difficult to probe space and understand what happens beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Things are changing fast, the sky at night does not look the same anymore, no big deal, right? Throughout history, only about 8,000 satellites have ever been sent to space, and there are about 2,000 currently active satellites. But astronomers have warned that the exponential number of satellites being sent into orbit lay the risk “of cutting us off from the cosmos”. The prediction came a day after SpaceX, (Elon Musk), launched 60 satellites at once as part of a project to send up to 42,000 into space in the coming years. These satellites have turned out to be far more reflective than anyone, even SpaceX engineers, expected. Now other companies are getting ready to colonize the low orbit space with their satellites. The result? We do not really know, but nothing good can be expected and this turns out to be a big problem for astronomer and scientists.

Plus, broken-down satellites, or what’s left of them, are already a big problem, particularly in low-Earth orbit, where SpaceX’s Starlink network is being deployed. The European Space Agency estimated in January that there are nearly a million pieces of space junk larger than 1 centimetre (about three-eighths of an inch) circling the planet. But what right does a single country, or a single company, has to pollute the space above us? As many times before once again humans or at list apart of them, are proceeding with no regulation, with no respect, with no ethics. Once again, the laws that we are trying so hard to enforce in the “civilized” world are not for the frontiers, are not for the dominating elite. Shall we just fold down? Should we just give up? Or is more than just a obsolete map in the sky in the sky we are losing? Like we are experiencing with the internet abuse and mass surveillance, with the digitalization and fragmentation of our world we will soon discover that all this is coming with a great price tag, we are loosing the future, we are loosing the dignity and capability to react and to fight for what is equal, ethic, considerate. Human rights can not be sold for profit or we will lose the very essence, spirit, reason for being alive.
