Quest’anno il sindaco di Velletri, Ascanio Cascella, ha voluto conferire una targa di riconoscimento a Giovanni Crecco, rientrato da New York dove vive da anni, e che in Usa ha esportato la cucina italiana, con particolare attenzione ai sapori e cibi veliterni.
Una storia commovente e straordinaria allo stesso tempo quella di Giovanni Crecco, veliterno per nascita ed americano per scelta e per lavoro, che partì nel maggio del 1966 per New York City, riuscendo nel corso degli anni a costruire un futuro radioso nel campo della ristorazione, tanto da meritare oggi un riconoscimento dal sindaco della sua città di origine, Ascanio Cascella, che insieme alla vicesindaco Chiara Ercoli gli ha voluto conferire nel mese di agosto una targa al merito “per aver esportato la cucina italiana negli Stati Uniti d’America. La sua passione e dedizione per la cucina italiana hanno reso possibile l’esportazione dei sapori autentici della nostra tradizione culinaria”.
Premiato dunque per aver raggiunto i massimi livelli dall’altro lato dell’oceano proprio con quei cibi tipici di Velletri che nei secoli hanno reso la cittadina punta di diamante dei Castelli Romani. Nel 1972 infatti Crecco aprì il primo ristorante con 16 tavoli e comincia la sua avventura nella ristorazione, conquistando i palati americani con le sue ricette inedite per quel territorio. A contatto con la gente impara presto e bene inglese e spagnolo, ma soprattutto conosce la sua futura moglie, anche lei italiana, originaria del frusinate, che era arrivata a New York con la famiglia alla ricerca di lavoro. Da allora non si sono più lasciati e hanno lavorato fianco a fianco finchè i due figli Gianni e Nicola, terminato il college, li hanno sostituiti permettendogli un meritato riposo.
L’esperienza con il primo ristorante permise a Giovanni Crecco l’acquisto di Villa Barone Hilltop Manor situata in Mahopac, New York. “Il 19 ottobre del 1989 ho comprato Villa Barone Manor con 2milioni di euro – ci racconta con orgoglio Crecco, all’interno dell’ufficio di Alessandro Ercoli, suo grande amico ed estimatore da sempre, – e da allora è andata sempre meglio perché siamo diventati punto di riferimento per il pubblico di New York specializzandoci anche nei banchetti nuziali che da noi sono quotati al top”.
La fama di eccellente imprenditore della ristorazione lo ha messo così in luce da ricevere nel ’95 invito dal presidente Clinton in rappresentanza dello Stato di New York in un meeting ai vertici di tutti gli stati della confederazione americana, durato quattro giorni presso la Casa Bianca.
Oggi Villa Barone Hilltop Manor, dopo 30 anni di attività, costituisce il punto di attrazione di ogni evento o banchetto nuziale e cerimonia, dei più importanti politici e professionisti per la sontuosità e la raffinatezza che offre nel presentare cibi e vini di eccellente qualità, trovando la sua sede della zona di Throgs Neck del Bronx, a pochi minuti da Westchester, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens e Long Island. Il testimone di questo grande successo di Giovanni Crecco, conquistato davvero di anno in anno con grande sacrificio, è passato ai figli Nicola e Gianni che nei risultati stanno mantenendo le perfomance di papà e mamma.
Ogni anno però Giovanni Crecco torna a Velletri e, quando ci racconta del suo primo ritorno dopo qualche anno dalla partenza, si commuove ricordando tutti gli amici che suo padre riunì per salutarlo. Certo Velletri gli è mancata molto…ma grande è stata la sua capacità di portare Velletri nel mondo!

This year, the mayor of Velletri, Ascanio Cascella, wished to present an award plaque to Giovanni Crecco, who returned from New York, where he has lived for years, and who exported Italian cuisine to the USA, with a special focus on Veliterni flavours and foods.
A moving and extraordinary story at the same time is that of Giovanni Crecco, Veliterno by birth and American by choice and by work, who left in May 1966 for New York City, succeeding over the years in building a bright future in the restaurant business, so much so that today he deserves recognition from the mayor of his hometown, Ascanio Cascella, who together with deputy mayor Chiara Ercoli presented him with a plaque of merit in August ‘for having exported Italian cuisine to the United States of America. His passion and dedication for Italian cuisine have made it possible to export the authentic flavours of our culinary tradition’.
Awarded, therefore, for having reached the highest levels on the other side of the ocean precisely with those typical Velletri foods that over the centuries have made the town the jewel in the crown of the Castelli Romani. In 1972, in fact, Crecco opened the first restaurant with 16 tables and began his adventure in the restaurant business, conquering American palates with his recipes unprecedented for that area. In contact with people he soon learnt English and Spanish well, but above all he met his future wife, also Italian, originally from Fusinate, who had arrived in New York with her family in search of work. Since then they have not left each other and worked side by side until their two sons Gianni and Nicola, having finished college, replaced them, allowing them a well-deserved rest.
The experience with the first restaurant enabled Giovanni Crecco to buy Villa Barone Hilltop Manor located in Mahopac, New York. ‘On 19 October 1989 I bought Villa Barone Manor with 2 million euro,’ Crecco proudly tells us, inside the office of Alessandro Ercoli, his great friend and long-time admirer, ’and since then it has gone better and better because we have become a point of reference for the New York public, specialising also in wedding banquets, which are top-rated here.
His reputation as an excellent caterer put him so much in the spotlight that in ‘95 he received an invitation from President Clinton to represent the State of New York at a four-day summit meeting of all the states of the American confederation at the White House.
Today Baron Hilltop Manor, after 30 years in the business, is the point of attraction for every event or wedding banquet and ceremony, of the most important politicians and professionals for the sumptuousness and refinement it offers in presenting food and wines of excellent quality, being located in the Throgs Neck area of the Bronx, just minutes from Westchester, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. The baton of Giovanni Crecco’s great success, truly conquered year after year with great sacrifice, has been passed on to his sons Nicola and Gianni, who are maintaining their father’s and mother’s performance in the results.
Every year, however, Giovanni Crecco returns to Velletri, and when he tells us about his first return after a few years since leaving, he is moved by the memory of all the friends his father gathered to greet him. Of course he missed Velletri a lot… but great was his ability to bring Velletri into the world!
