Anton Giulio Onofri, il fotografo che sa catturare l’essenza del tempo

Anton Giulio Onofri è nato a Roma il 30 novembre del 1959.  Non ha seguito un percorso accademico formale in fotografia: è un autodidatta, ha imparato “sul campo”, sviluppando la sua sensibilità visiva fin da ragazzo.

Nel corso della sua carriera ha lavorato in diversi ambiti: fotografia, scrittura, video, televisione, ama mescolare i diversi linguaggi comunicativi. Le sue mostre spesso includono testi, lettere, flussi narrativi. Non è solo lo sguardo dell’immagine, ma anche della parola che accompagna, in un impegno anche civile ed etico della sua narrazione.

Un esempio recente del suo impegno sociale è la mostra Roma città chiusa, realizzato su incarico della Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma durante la primavera 2020, per il quale ha fotografato la città durante la quarantena, negli spazi pubblici vuoti.

Onofri utilizza la fotografia non solo come rappresentazione ma come racconto: spesso le sue immagini non sono semplici scorci, bensì meditazioni sugli spazi, sul tempo che cambia, sull’assenza. Il progetto Roma città chiusa è emblematico di questa ricerca: la città privata del suo popolamento abituale diventa spazio esistenziale, in cui ogni vuoto ha un peso, ogni monumento risuona di luce, silenzio e memoria.

Il suo lavoro è un esempio di come la fotografia contemporanea italiana possa muoversi fuori dai circuiti puramente artistici per coinvolgere la cultura, la memoria, l’architettura, il paesaggio urbano, e temi sociali (come la pandemia). Offre una riflessione estetica ma anche morale/simbolica.

Anton Giulio Onofri was born in Rome on November 30, 1959. He did not follow a formal academic path in photography: he is self-taught, learning “on the job” and developing his visual sensitivity from a young age.

Throughout his career, he has worked in various fields: photography, writing, video, and television. He loves to mix different forms of communication. His exhibitions often include texts, letters, and narrative flows. It is not only the image that matters, but also the words that accompany it, in a civil and ethical commitment to his narrative.

A recent example of his social commitment is the exhibition Roma città chiusa (Rome, a closed city), commissioned by the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome during the spring of 2020, for which he photographed the city during quarantine, in empty public spaces.

Onofri uses photography not only as representation but as storytelling: often his images are not simple glimpses, but meditations on space, on changing time, on absence. The project Roma città chiusa (Rome, a closed city) is emblematic of this research: the city, deprived of its usual population, becomes an existential space, where every void has weight, every monument resonates with light, silence, and memory.

His work is an example of how contemporary Italian photography can move beyond purely artistic circles to engage with culture, memory, architecture, the urban landscape, and social issues (such as the pandemic). It offers an aesthetic but also a moral/symbolic reflection.
