Washington. 36° Gala annuale dei National Education & Leadership Awards

Washington, D.C., 28 maggio 2025 – I leader del governo, della medicina, del servizio pubblico, delle arti e del cinema sono stati premiati giovedì al Ronald Reagan Building e all’International Trade Center di Washington D.C. dalla Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) in occasione del 36° Gala annuale dei National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA), che celebra la regione Lombardia.

La SIF ha assegnato quasi 200.000 dollari in borse di studio a 18 studenti, tra i 5.000 e i 20.000 dollari ciascuna, a laureati e diplomati di origine italiana per il loro esemplare rendimento accademico, la leadership scolastica e il servizio alla comunità. Nove dei beneficiari delle borse di studio hanno partecipato al Gala NELA 2025 e sono stati premiati sul palco.

Tra i premiati del NELA 2025 figurano: Attilio Fontana (Presidente della Lombardia); Cristiana Dell’Anna (attrice teatrale e cinematografica, protagonista di Cabrini); Francesca Zambello (Direttore artistico della Washington National Opera); l‘Onorevole Nick LaLota (Rappresentante dello Stato americano per il primo distretto congressuale di New York); e il Dottor Pierpaolo Sileri (noto chirurgo, ex senatore e viceministro della Sanità della Repubblica Italiana).

 A ritirare il premio a nome del Presidente Fontana è stato il Vicepresidente Marco Alparone, che durante l’evento ha parlato dello stretto rapporto tra Stati Uniti e Lombardia. “Questo premio è un omaggio al forte legame tra la Lombardia e gli Stati Uniti, un legame fatto di storia, cultura e valori condivisi con la comunità italo-americana”, ha detto.

All’evento era presente anche Alessandro Gonzales, Vice Capo Missione dell’Ambasciata d’Italia, che ha pronunciato un discorso a nome del Presidente Onorario Mariangela Zappia, Ambasciatore d’Italia negli Stati Uniti. Nel suo discorso ha affermato che l’OSDIA “continua ad essere un punto di riferimento primario per la comunità italo-americana, che svolge un ruolo vitale nella società americana, ed è il motore del rapporto vitale tra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti”, aggiungendo che il rapporto è “un legame transatlantico, costruito su valori condivisi”.

Un altro momento saliente della serata è stato “la celebrazione degli importanti risultati ottenuti dai nostri talentuosi studenti borsisti”, ha dichiarato Joseph Sciame, Presidente della Fondazione Figli d’Italia.

 “Questa serata non è stata solo una celebrazione dell’eccellenza italo-americana attraverso i nostri premiati e studenti borsisti, ma è anche una testimonianza dell’importante relazione tra gli Stati Uniti e la Regione Lombardia”, ha aggiunto.

La Sons of Italy Foundation è il braccio filantropico dell’Ordine dei Figli e delle Figlie d’Italia in America (OSDIA). Fondato nel 1905, l’OSDIA ha sede a Washington, D.C., vicino a Capitol Hill, e conta più di 400 logge a livello nazionale.

 Ad oggi, la SIF ha donato decine di milioni di dollari, a beneficio delle sue campagne di raccolta fondi per i quattro enti di beneficenza nazionali: l’Alzheimer’s Association, la Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, la Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism e il Garibaldi Meucci Museum.

36th Annual National Education & Leadership Awards

Washington, D.C., May 28, 2025– Leaders in government, medicine, public service, the arts, and cinema were honored at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C. on Thursday by the Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) at its 36th Annual National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA) Gala, celebrating the region of Lombardy.

The SIF awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships to 18 students, ranging from $5,000-$20,000 each, to undergraduate and graduate students of proud Italian descent for exemplary academic performance, school leadership, and community service. Nine of the scholarship recipients attended the 2025 NELA Gala and were presented with their awards on stage.

The 2025 NELA Honorees included: Attilio Fontana (President of Lombardy); Cristiana Dell’Anna (Stage and Film Actress, Lead Actress in Cabrini); Francesca Zambello (Artistic Director, Washington National Opera); the Honorable Nick LaLota (U.S. State Representative for New York’s 1st Congressional District); and Dr. Pierpaolo Sileri (Renowned Surgeon, Former Senator and Deputy Minister of Health for the Italian Republic).

Accepting the award on behalf of President Fontana was Vice President Marco Alparone, who spoke during the event about the close relationship between the United States and Lombardy. “This award is a tribute to the strong connection between Lombardy and the United States, a connection made of history, culture, and shared values with the Italian American community,” he said.

Also present at the event was Alessandro Gonzales, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Italy, who delivered remarks on behalf of Honorary Chair Mariangela Zappia, Ambassador of Italy to the U.S. In his speech, he said that OSDIA “continues to be a primary point of reference for the Italian-American community, who plays a vital role in the American society, and is the engine of the vital relationship between Italy and the United States,”  adding that the relationship is “a transatlantic bond, built on shared values.”

Another highlight of the evening was “celebrating the important accomplishments of our talented scholarship students,” said Joseph Sciame, President of the Sons of Italy Foundation.

“This evening was not only a celebration of Italian American excellence through our honorees and scholarship students, but is also a testament to the important relationship between the United States and the Region of Lombardy,” he added.

The Sons of Italy Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA). Founded in 1905, OSDIA is headquartered in Washington, D.C. near Capitol Hill and has more than 400 lodges nationwide.

The SIF has donated tens of millions of dollars to date, benefiting its ongoing fundraising campaigns for its four national charities – the Alzheimer’s Association, the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, the Doug Flutie Jr., Foundation for Autism, and the Garibaldi Meucci Museum.
