L’8 maggio 2025, alle 18:08, una fumata bianca si è alzata dalla Cappella Sistina, annunciando al mondo l’elezione del 267° Papa della Chiesa cattolica: il Cardinale americano Robert Francis Prévost, che ha scelto il nome di Leone XIV. La fumata è arrivata inaspettatamente ed è stato estremamente emozionante assistere di persona con la collaborazione del magazine The Daily Cases all’elezione del nuovo leader della Chiesa cattolica: la fumata improvvisa e il Papa appena eletto che ha parlato per la prima volta dalla terrazza di Piazza San Pietro sono la ricompensa per le infinite ore di attesa.
Il mistero del conclave ha fatto sì che enormi folle si siano radunate in Piazza San Pietro per assistere alla scelta dei cardinali. La decisione è giunta inaspettata, poiché tutti presumevano che il Papa sarebbe stato un italiano.
Un cuore americano, uno spirito universale
Nato a Chicago il 14 settembre 1955, Robert Francis Prevost è il primo Papa degli Stati Uniti e il primo dell’Ordine di Sant’Agostino. Con una formazione accademica in matematica, filosofia e teologia, ha prestato servizio come missionario in Perù e in seguito come vescovo di Chiclayo dal 2014 al 2023. Nel 2023 è stato nominato prefetto del Dicastero per i Vescovi e presidente della Pontificia Commissione per l’America Latina.
La sua elezione segna la continuità dell’eredità di Papa Francesco, sottolineando l’attenzione ai poveri e agli emarginati e l’impegno per una Chiesa più inclusiva e compassionevole.

In questi tempi di incertezza internazionale e di guerre distruttive, l’elezione di un nuovo Papa è stata di fondamentale importanza e un Papa americano, Leone XIV, potrebbe avere un impatto progressivo sullo sviluppo nel bene degli eventi del mondo.

On May 8, 2025, at 6:08 p.m., white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, announcing to the world the election of the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church: American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has chosen the name Leo XIV. The smoke came unexpectedly and it has been extremely emotional to watch in person the election of the new Catholic Church leader – the sudden smoke that appeared and the Pope that spoke for the first time from the terrace of the Saint Peter’s square has been breathtaking and was worth of endless hours of waiting.
The mystery of the conclave kept enormous crowds gathering on the Saint Peter’s square attending the decision of the cardinals. The decision came very unexpected as everybody presumed the Pope would be an Italian one.
An American Heart, a Universal Spirit
Born in Chicago on September 14, 1955, Robert Francis Prevost is the first Pope from the United States and the first from the Order of St. Augustine. With an academic background in mathematics, philosophy, and theology, he served as a missionary in Peru and later as bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023. In 2023, he was appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
His election marks a continuation of Pope Francis’ legacy, emphasizing attention to the poor and marginalized, and a commitment to a more inclusive and compassionate Church.
