Un nuovo pontefice per un tempo nuovo: accogliamo con gioia Papa Leone XIV

Con profonda gratitudine e sincera speranza, accogliamo la notizia dell’elezione di Papa Leone XIV, già Cardinale Robert Francis Prevost, primo Pontefice proveniente dal continente americano. Un evento storico che segna non soltanto una nuova tappa nella vita della Chiesa cattolica, ma anche un segno dei tempi: un’apertura spirituale e pastorale che abbraccia l’universalità del messaggio evangelico nella sua declinazione più autenticamente umana e globale.
L’esperienza maturata da Papa Leone XIV nei contesti tanto del Sud America — in particolare in Perù, dove ha svolto per anni il suo ministero missionario — quanto del Nord America, testimonia un percorso di ascolto, prossimità e servizio che ben si coniuga con lo spirito del pontificato di Papa Francesco, di cui è stato stretto collaboratore. È lecito dunque sperare in una continuità profonda, non solo nelle priorità pastorali, ma anche nella volontà di riforma, nella promozione del dialogo interreligioso, della giustizia sociale e della pace.
In questo tempo segnato da transizioni complesse, la nostra amata Chiesa ha bisogno di un padre che sappia coniugare la fermezza della dottrina con la tenerezza della misericordia, la fedeltà alla tradizione con il coraggio profetico del discernimento. Papa Leone XIV appare come figura capace di incarnare queste istanze, offrendo una guida salda e ispirata in un mondo che cerca punti di riferimento credibili e testimoni autentici del Vangelo.
Come figli della Chiesa, come cittadini del mondo e come operatori impegnati nella cooperazione tra i popoli, ci stringiamo attorno al nuovo Successore di Pietro, certi che il suo pontificato porterà nuova luce, nuova unità e nuovo slancio alla missione universale della Chiesa.

With deep gratitude and sincere hope, we welcome the news of the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the first Pontiff from the American continent. This historic event marks not only a new stage in the life of the Catholic Church, but also a sign of the times: a spiritual and pastoral openness that embraces the universality of the Gospel message in its most authentically human and global declension.
The experience gained by Pope Leo XIV in the contexts of both South America – particularly Peru, where he carried out his missionary ministry for years – and North America, testifies to a path of listening, proximity and service that fits well with the spirit of the pontificate of Pope Francis, whose close collaborator he has been. One can therefore hope for profound continuity, not only in pastoral priorities, but also in the desire for reform, the promotion of interreligious dialogue, social justice and peace.
In this time marked by complex transitions, our beloved Church needs a father who can combine the firmness of doctrine with the tenderness of mercy, fidelity to tradition with the prophetic courage of discernment. Pope Leo XIV appears as a figure capable of embodying these instances, offering steadfast and inspired guidance in a world seeking credible points of reference and authentic witnesses to the Gospel.
As sons and daughters of the Church, as citizens of the world and as workers committed to cooperation among peoples, we gather around the new Successor of Peter, certain that his pontificate will bring new light, new unity and new impetus to the Church’s universal mission.
