Il fantastico viaggio di Paolo, John, Peter e Ross. Tappa 4- From Melbourne to Adelaide. The fantastic trip of Paolo, John, Peter and Ross. Stage 4

From Melbourne to Adelaide. The fantastic trip of Paolo, John, Peter and Ross. Stage 4

Starting from Port Fairy we travelled 79km towards Portland where we were welcomed by a small man who had married a Lithuanian woman. He told us sadly that during a trip to his country to visit relatives their son was murdered! Ionce wrote an article on the countries of the former Soviet Union and the violation of Human Rights that nobody talks about because they are now affiliated with the European Union or under the patronage of the United States of America.

The man, who is small physically and with a bad disease, has transformed his farm into a welcoming Guest House in honour of his wife. It is a beautiful guest house with attention to the smallest details both inside the rooms and outside!

Apart from this moving story today did not give us any suggestive countryside. In the video John tells us that during World War II in all this area Prisoners of War and migrants worked along the entire course that we travelled removing enormous boulders with the strength of their bare hands in order to build the road.

Furthermore, today we saw huge spaces dedicated to the breeding of bulls, cows, sheep and Llamas. Yes, the animals will go to the slaughterhouse but they live a truly natural life precisely because of the great spaces that Australia possesses, hectares and hectares of expanse where the eye cannot see a boundary!

Today’s stage will be even tougherer, about 140km. This would not be a difficult distance if the weather forecast had not predicted conditions worse than today with driving rain, thunder, lightning and very strong winds above 25km per hour but Dailycases’ heroes continue undaunted and we will leave Portland at dawn for Southend where we will meet Alan, one of John’s former students who is of Italian origin and a teacher at Franklin High School who moved to this isolated township years ago after having married a beautiful Irish woman!
