History and Migration

di emigrazione e di matrimoni

In the “Italiani nel mondo” (Italians in the world) column we try to tell the history and the many realities of Italian migration but we do not address an issue that involves only us Italians but all human beings, without exception.

In fact, the history of Mankind is the history of migration as we can understand very well with two striking examples.

The first example comes from the discovery by archeologists in Africa who have shown without the slightest doubt that the origins of Mankind were in that continent and that since then Mankind has migrated to all the continents, now even in Antarctica where it could not establish itself until only a few years ago in terms of history.

The second example is taught at school not only in Italy but in almost all the countries in Europe. In his “Commentaries” Julius Caesar describes the migration of the Cimbri and the Teutones into Roman Gaul which marked the start of the wars described in his masterpiece. This episode clearly demonstrates the truth that many do not know or do not want to understand.

Nobody knows if that huge wave of migration in Roman times was caused by a natural disaster, a disease or a war but we only have to open the history books to see how these episodes were decisive over the millennia and then open the newspapers to read that they have never disappeared and that they still play an active role in our lives.

Unfortunately, in many countries across all the continents politicians continue to use these waves to promote political agendas with an eye to the next elections instead of trying to resolve the motivations for the migrations and/or to find the best ways to integrate the new arrivals in the countries of residence.

And, as always, as a society starting with the European Union to then extend to the rest of the world, we forget, often deliberately, that history should provide us the means to avoid repeating mistakes and tragedies of the past instead of justifying and doing nothing to resolve the problems that caused them.

Worse still many commentators, and not only politicians, see the migrations as clashes of cultures and therefore avoid another fundamental aspect of history, that all cultures grow and develop when they meet other cultures and they learn and absorb the new technologies and ideas of others.

And in this too history provides us with an extraordinary example thanks to the inexorable work of Nature.

The world’s oldest continual culture is that of the Australian Aborigines. Their culture goes back to at least thirty thousand years ago when the first groups could reach the southern continent on foot. However, with the movement of the terrestrial masses the natural bridges that allowed them to enter disappeared under the waters, effectively isolating the continent’s new inhabitants from the rest of the world. Due to this isolation the various groups of Aborigines were not able to develop beyond a very rudimental technology but they were still capable of unique ideas, such as the boomerang, that no other culture developed.

Unfortunately, when the colonialists then reached the continent less than three centuries ago we saw all the devastating effects of the arrival of men with means, and in particular weapons, which the natives could not oppose. There were clashes that had already been seen in the Americas first with the Conquistadores in Latin America and then in the devastating expansions in the territories of the native populations that over the years would become the modern countries of the United States and Canada.

However, the paradox is that the historical forces that brought about these horrors were also driven by a form of migration. And what other words can we use to describe this will of Mankind to start a new life in other territories and lands that almost always already have their own inhabitants if not Migration?

In fact, these wars of conquest and colonization created the conditions in almost all the continents that today they lead tens of thousands of people, if not more, a week to leave their countries of birth to start new lives in other continents.

Mankind, history and migration are bound together irreversibly because the desire to travel and for new lands, as well as the desire to possess as much land as possible are emotions that are part of Mankind’s nature since the day man discovered that he could sow plants and keep animals instead of depending on luck and Nature for his survival.

I will say more, if politicians truly want to find a way to prevent the migrations that are upsetting countries in all the continents, we must finally recognize not only certain historic episodes in all the continents but above all we must finally learn the true lessons of these episodes.

Many countries that consider themselves advanced must understand that their former colonies have the right to grow without foreign interference that does nothing but weaken them economically and politically and subsequently force their citizens to risk their lives in dangerous journeys.

Just as the citizens of these countries must understand that their lives are in their hands through a weapon that changed the face of all the advanced countries, the ballot paper. However, voting means nothing is foreign powers force local governments to make decisions based on their own needs instead of the needs of the underdeveloped countries.

Furthermore, we must look at migration not as a matter of numbers or with fear, as we often see in the newspapers and the TV talk shows, but as matters of human beings who have the same rights and duties that we have to be able to live in peace and to find the best way to live for their families.

Yes, Migration is part of our history and let us look at it with a critical eye to search for what all too often is hidden by newspaper and TV news headlines and the useless speeches of politicians because only true solutions will be able to resolve the worldwide crisis that has lasted far too long.
