Il premio San Lazzaro 2026 e l’assemblea del Corpo Italiano di San Lazzaro
Nella suggestiva cornice del Palazzo dei Priori, posto nel centro di Viterbo, si è svolta la consegna del Premio San Lazzaro 2026. I lavori si sono tenuti il 9 maggio, e si sono articolati in una seduta pubblica, al mattino, durante la quale sono stati consegnati il premio annuale del Corpo ed alcune benemerenze e riconoscimenti. La cerimonia, ospitata nella storica Sala Regia del Palazzo dei Priori, uno dei luoghi simbolo della città di Viterbo, si è svolta alla presenza di rappresentanti delle istituzioni, del mondo associativo e della società civile, in un clima di forte partecipazione e condivisione dei valori della solidarietà e del servizio al prossimo.
In apertura dei lavori, il benvenuto della città di Viterbo è stato portato dal Sindaco dott.ssa Chiara Frontini. Il Presidente Nazionale del Corpo Italiano di San Lazzaro, prof. Antonio Virgili, ha poi sinteticamente delineato la storia e le principali attività svolte dal Corpo nelle sue molteplici articolazioni associative, internazionali e territoriali italiane, introducendo i presenti allo spirito della successiva premiazione. Il Premio San Lazzaro nasce con l’intento specifico di valorizzare persone che si siano distinte nel campo dell’impegno sociale, umanitario e culturale, in coerenza con gli ideali storici e solidaristici del Corpo Italiano di San Lazzaro. Tra i premi precedentemente conferiti quelli ad Antonio Marfella (a Napoli, nel 2022), oncologo ed epidemiologo molto attivo nel campo della prevenzione primaria, e ad Ugo Mancini (a Cagliari, nel 2024), promotore di una casa di accoglienza per genitori di bambini oncologici.
Il Premio San Lazzaro 2026 è stato quindi consegnato dal Presidente Nazionale prof. Antonio Virgili, a Don Antonio Coluccia, per il suo instancabile impegno pastorale e civile nei territori segnati dal degrado sociale, dalla criminalità e dall’emarginazione, nonché per la costante opera di vicinanza ai giovani, alle famiglie e alle persone più fragili. La sua testimonianza rappresenta un esempio concreto di coraggio, solidarietà e difesa della dignità umana. Nella motivazione è stato sottolineato come la figura di Don Antonio Coluccia incarni pienamente lo spirito del Premio San Lazzaro: una testimonianza concreta di dedizione verso gli ultimi e di impegno quotidiano per la legalità, la giustizia sociale e la costruzione di una comunità più umana e inclusiva. Il Corpo Italiano di San Lazzaro ha così ribadito il proprio impegno nel promuovere iniziative concrete di carattere sociale, culturale e solidaristico sul territorio nazionale, proseguendo nello spirito dei valori storici tradizionali dell’assistenza e del sostegno ai più vulnerabili.
Nell’occasione, è stata conferita dal Presidente Nazionale alla Dott.ssa Chiara Frontini, Sindaco di Viterbo, quale rappresentante dell’intera cittadinanza, la Benemerenza Pro merito Sancti Lazari, per l’attenzione ed il sostegno manifestato ai volontari del Corpo che operano nel territorio di Viterbo e per la cordiale ospitalità offerta. Un riconoscimento di particolare apprezzamento per le attività svolte con impegno e generosità è stato poi assegnato dal Presidente Nazionale, a due volontarie del Corpo, le socie Maria Antonietta Capocasale (Nucleo di Roma) ed Emma Mecarini (Nucleo di Viterbo). I lavori sono quindi proseguiti con un breve video sulle attività svolte, realizzato dal Gruppo Roma-Viterbo del Corpo, che è stato illustrato dal responsabile per l’area Dott. Germano Assumma.
La parte finale della mattinata ha registrato numerosi interventi di saluto ed apprezzamento per il lavoro svolto dal Corpo. In particolare, hanno preso la parola: il Presidente del Parco di Veio Giorgio Polesi, il delegato della Provincia di Viterbo Umberto di Fosco, la Cons. Tamara Sernacchioli del Comune di Bassano Romano, il delegato del Vescovo di Civita Castellana Don Luciano Cinelli, il rappresentante della BCC della Provincia Romana Mario Porcu, il Comandante della Guardia di Finanza di Viterbo Col. Marco Toppetti, il delegato della BCC di Viterbo Mirco Marinello, il Cons. Francesco Marcorelli dell’UNPLI.
Dopo una breve pausa, nel primo pomeriggio sono ripresi i lavori con la parte più strettamente assembleare riservata ai componenti del Corpo. L’assemblea è stata aperta dal Segretario Generale dott. Alexander Virgili, che ha relazionato sulle attività svolte, sul bilancio e su alcuni progetti. Numerosi gli interventi da parte dei convenuti che hanno alimentato il dibattito con ampie riflessioni sulle attività svolte e con diverse proposte su quelle future. Ѐ stata infine consegnata la Benemerenza Pro Merito Sancti Lazari ad Alessandra Croci, per il costante impegno a favore del Corpo.
The 2026 San Lazzaro Award and the General Assembly of the Italian Corps of San Lazzaro
The 2026 San Lazzaro Award ceremony took place in the picturesque setting of the Palazzo dei Priori, located in the centre of Viterbo. The proceedings were held on 9 May and consisted of a public session in the morning, during which the Corps’ annual award and a number of honours and commendations were presented. The ceremony, hosted in the historic Sala Regia of the Palazzo dei Priori, one of the city of Viterbo’s most iconic landmarks, took place in the presence of representatives from institutions, the voluntary sector and civil society, in an atmosphere of strong participation and shared values of solidarity and service to others.
The proceedings opened with a welcome address on behalf of the city of Viterbo delivered by the Mayor, Dr Chiara Frontini. The National President of the Italian Corps of St Lazarus, Prof. Antonio Virgili, briefly outlined the history and main activities carried out by the Corps through its various organisational branches, both international and across Italy, introducing those present to the spirit of the subsequent awards ceremony. The San Lazzaro Award was established with the specific aim of recognising individuals who have distinguished themselves in the fields of social, humanitarian and cultural engagement, in keeping with the historical and solidarity-based ideals of the Italian Corps of St Lazarus. Previous recipients include Antonio Marfella (in Naples, in 2022), an oncologist and epidemiologist who has been highly active in the field of primary prevention, and Ugo Mancini (in Cagliari, in 2024), the founder of a support centre for parents of children with cancer.
The 2026 San Lazzaro Award was therefore presented by the National President, Prof. Antonio Virgili, to Don Antonio Coluccia, for his tireless pastoral and civic commitment in areas marked by social decline, crime and marginalisation, as well as for his constant work in supporting young people, families and the most vulnerable. His example represents a concrete demonstration of courage, solidarity and the defence of human dignity. The citation emphasised how the figure of Don Antonio Coluccia fully embodies the spirit of the San Lazzaro Award: a concrete testimony of dedication to the most vulnerable and of daily commitment to the rule of law, social justice and the building of a more humane and inclusive community. The Italian Corps of San Lazzaro has thus reaffirmed its commitment to promoting concrete social, cultural and solidarity-based initiatives across the country, continuing in the spirit of the traditional historical values of assistance and support for the most vulnerable.
On this occasion, the National President awarded the ‘Benemerenza Pro merito Sancti Lazari’ to Dr. Chiara Frontini, Mayor of Viterbo, as a representative of the entire community, in recognition of the attention and support she has shown to the Corps’ volunteers working in the Viterbo area and for the warm hospitality she has extended. A special award in recognition of the activities carried out with commitment and generosity was then presented by the National President to two volunteers of the Corps, members Maria Antonietta Capocasale (Rome Unit) and Emma Mecarini (Viterbo Unit). The proceedings then continued with a short video on the activities carried out, produced by the Corps’ Rome-Viterbo Group, which was presented by the area manager, Dr Germano Assumma.
The final part of the morning featured numerous speeches of greeting and appreciation for the work carried out by the Corps. In particular, the following took the floor: the President of the Veio Park, Giorgio Polesi; the delegate of the Province of Viterbo, Umberto di Fosco; Councillor Tamara Sernacchioli of the Municipality of Bassano Romano; the delegate of the Bishop of Civita Castellana, Don Luciano Cinelli; the representative of the BCC of the Province of Rome, Mario Porcu; the Commander of the Guardia di Finanza in Viterbo, Col. Marco Toppetti, the delegate of the BCC of Viterbo, Mirco Marinello, and Councillor Francesco Marcorelli of the UNPLI.
After a short break, proceedings resumed in the early afternoon, with the part of the meeting strictly reserved for members of the Corps. The meeting was opened by the Secretary General, Dr Alexander Virgili, who reported on the activities carried out, the budget and a number of projects. There were numerous contributions from those present, who fuelled the debate with extensive reflections on past activities and various proposals for future ones. Finally, the Benemerenza Pro Merito Sancti Lazari was awarded to Alessandra Croci for her constant commitment to the Corps.
