Il Cardinale Re che ha celebrato la cerimonia dei funerali ha ricordato così Papa Francesco – “Di fronte alle guerre Francesco ha incessantemente implorato la pace”.

250mila persone hanno assistito ai funerali di Papa Francesco in Piazza San Pietro con 166 tra capi di Stato e delegazioni internazionali. A presidiare le esequie è stato il decano del collegio cardinalizio, il Cardinale Giovanni Battista Re.
A seguire il lungo corteo funebre, parte del rito della traslazione della salma nella Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Nel rispetto delle volontà espresse dal Papa lui è stato sepolto tra la Cappella Paolina e la Cappella Sforza.
Tra i partecipanti della cerimonia sono stati il presidente Donald Trump con la first lady Melania, Volodimir Zelensky, Emmanuel Macron, Sir Kier Starmer, il Principe William, la Presidente della Commissione europea Ursula Von der Leyen. Con la presenza di così tanti leader mondiali, i funerali di Papa Francesco sono diventati uno degli incontri internazionali più significativi dell’anno.

Infatti seguendo le parole del Cardinale Re la pace è stata un delle tematiche più significative. Trump e Zelensky hanno avuto una conversazione privata, durata 15 minuti, all’interno della Basilica di San Pietro. Questo incontro è stato descritto dal Direttore della Comunicazione della Casa Bianca Steven Cheung come “molto produttivo”.

Prima dell’inizio del funerale siamo riusciti a fare un’intervista al membro dell’associazione San Pietro e Paolo Valerio Scambelluri che si occupava della sorveglianza e dell’organizzazione della cerimonia funebre. Valerio ci ha raccontato alcuni momenti dei giorni precedenti che lui ha vissuto come parte della organizzazione e della sorveglianza.
“Il Papa da un po’ stava male, lo sapevano tutti, ma non ci aspettavamo questa morte improvvisa, -dice a noi nell’intervista esclusiva Valerio poche ore prima della cerimonia, – La stiamo gestendo credo al meglio perché una morte non è mai “organizzata”. La macchina organizzativa è stata messa in piedi per rispondere ai fedeli. Ieri c’erano circa 150mila persone per onorare il corpo e oggi sono attesi circa 200mila e noi siamo in tanti qui a gestire la sorveglianza e sicurezza.
Ogni corpo sta rispondendo alle esigenze, agli ordini dei propri superiori, credo al meglio. Adesso mancano 2 ore e credo che stia andando tutto bene. “
Ho chiesto se fosse arrivato già Trump e Valerio ha risposto che è arrivato a Roma, ma non ancora a San Pietro e ci racconta di aver visto il giorno precedente da vicino Emmanuel Macron dentro la Basilica di san Pietro mentre faceva la sorveglianza del corpo di Papa Francesco ed è stata scattata una foto che ha fatto il giro di tutti i media mondiali.
“Dobbiamo garantire la sicurezza a tutti i fedeli, – ha ribadito Valerio e ha raccontato come è stato lavorare tutti questi anni col vicino a diversi Pontefici. Ho avuto la fortuna di essere vicino al corpo di Giovanni Paolo II, di Papa Ratzinger e di papa Francesco.
“Noi abbiamo aperto alle 6 meno quarto e c’era già gente, è chiaro che la partecipazione è molto alta” ha detto Valerio riguardo la presenza dei fedeli in piazza san Pietro.
Grazie all’impegno di Valerio e tante persone come lui il funerale del Santo Padre è stato un successo dal punto di vista dell’organizzazione e della sicurezza portando Roma ad un livello internazionale molto alto.

250 thousand people attended the funeral of Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square with 166 heads of state and international delegations. The funeral was presided over by the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.

Before the start of the funeral we were able to do an interview with the member of the San Pietro and Paolo association Valerio Scambelluri who was in charge for the surveillance and organization of the funeral ceremony. Valerio told us about some moments of the previous days that he experienced as part of the organization and surveillance.
“The Pope had been ill for a while, everyone knew it, but we did not expect this sudden death,” Valerio said to us in the exclusive interview a few hours before the ceremony, “I believe we are managing it as best we can because a death is never “organized”. The organizational machine was set up to respond to the faithful. Yesterday there were about 150 thousand people to honor the body and today about 200 thousand were expected and there are many of us here to manage surveillance and security.
Each body is responding to the needs, to the orders of its superiors, I believe at its best. Now there are 2 hours left and I think everything is going well. “
I asked if Trump had already arrived and Valerio replied that he had arrived in Rome, but not yet in St. Peter’s and he tells us that the previous day he had seen Emmanuel Macron up close inside St. Peter’s Basilica while he was guarding the body of Pope Francis and a photo was taken that made the rounds of all the world media.
“We must guarantee safety to all the pilgrims”, Valerio said and he remembered what it has been like to work all these years close to several Popes. I was lucky enough to be close to John Paul II, Pope Ratzinger and Pope Francis.
“We opened at a quarter to 6AM and there were already many people, it is clear that the participation is very high,” Valerio said, “talking about the presence of the faithful in St. Peter’s Square.”
Thanks to the commitment of Valerio and many people like him, the funeral of the Holy Father was a success from the point of view of organization and security, bringing Rome to a very high international level.
