Lo sfruttamento dei migranti

Sarebbe bello pensare che la vita degli emigrati, non importa in quale paese, non importa in quale epoca, sia stata solo lavoro e famiglia e che questi sforzi siano stati tutti premiati nel modo giusto. Ma questa impressione, che moltissimi all’estero hanno della vita dei loro genitori, nonni e bisnonni immigrati, non è stata così limpida come vorremmo pensare e c’è un aspetto che fin troppo spesso evitiamo di riconoscere od omettiamo nel parlarne. Ma è sbagliato. 

E c’è una parola che descrive fin troppo bene quel che non vogliamo riconoscere esplicitamente, lo sfruttamento. 

Lo sfruttamento è una parola brutta perché descrive il maltrattamento di uomini e donne per scopi di lucro, a causa di pregiudizi, oppure, il peggior caso, per motivi di malavita, ed in questo noi italiani abbiamo una Storia di sfruttamento che spesso evitiamo di documentare per vari motivi. Una Storia che non è mai finita del tutto. 

Chissà quanti emigrati hanno nascosto ai figli quel che dovevano fare per ottenere e mantenere il lavoro cha dava da mangiare alle loro famiglie, e un altro dettaglio che troppi hanno dimenticato, come anche i soldi che spessissimo inviavano alle loro famiglie rimaste a casa e che spesso pagavano anche i biglietti per permettere a fratelli e sorelle di raggiungerli nel nuovo paese.  

L’effetto di tutto questo era di dare ai figli, nipoti e pronipoti degli immigrati l’impressione di una “vita d’oro” fatta di lavoro duro e buona volontà, che non dice niente delle barriere e le difficoltà vere e spesso amare che hanno dovuto subire, barriere che fin troppo spesso erano anche create da altri italiani. 

A causa di questi aspetti i discendenti degli emigrati italiani sin dall’inizio dell’emigrazione oltre duecento anni fa, hanno oggi un’idea approssimativa e “utopistica” della vita dei loro avi, e lo vediamo ogni giorno nei post dei discendenti che lodano i loro nonni e bisnonni. 

Però abbiamo l’obbligo di documentare anche questi aspetti della vita degli immigrati non solo per onestà storica, ma per un motivo ben preciso e ancora più vergognoso. Questi sfruttamenti degli immigrati non si sono mai fermati, non solo verso i nostri figli che ora partono per cercare una vita nuova all’estero, ma le cronache dei giornali italiani dimostrano chiaramente che succede regolarmente oggigiorno anche in Italia. 

Ma cosa vuol dire sfruttamento? Ovviamente lo sfruttamento più comune è quello di pagare male il lavoro, ma saremmo sciocchi a pensare che si limiti solo a questo. 

Lo sfruttamento è anche quello della malavita che “proteggeva” gli altri italiani da presunti altri pericoli. Lo sfruttamento era dare prestiti a tassi d’interesse alti agli immigrati perché le banche locali non volevano prestare loro soldi per comprare le case. 

Lo sfruttamento era anche di cercare “favori” da persone con subdole minacce di fare del male ai loro parenti, oppure con lo spauracchio che avrebbero perso il lavoro se non avessero accettato le “richieste”. E la forma più comune di questo sfruttamento ha un altro nome altrettanto brutto: molestie sessuali, se non addirittura stupro, che poi le donne tenevano nascosto, spesso con costi personali alti, dal marito o la famiglia. 

Queste sono solo alcune forme di sfruttamento, ma lo spazio non ci permette di farne un elenco completo. 

E nel parlare di questi aspetti della vita degli immigrati vorremmo anche suggerire ai giovani italiani che pensano a un possibile futuro all’estero, che lo sfruttamento esiste ancora nel mondo e farebbero bene a tenere la mente aperta quando fanno i primi passi verso quella nuova vita, perché ci sono persone, purtroppo anche tra gli italiani, che non hanno alcun timore nel cercare di trarre vantaggi e di sfruttare i nuovi arrivati. Ed in questo non escludiamo alcun paese, senza eccezione. 

Basta leggere i commenti sui social dei giovani italiani all’estero negli ultimi anni per vedere commenti bellissimi della nuova vita, come anche le espressioni di delusione di chi ha scoperto che in ogni paese c’è gente che vede gli immigrati come prede da utilizzare per i propri scopi di ogni genere. 

Allora i giovani italiani che partono per l’estero per farsi una nuova vita devono stare attenti in ogni occasione, assicurandosi che le offerte siano vere e non tranelli per il nuovo impiegato. Per esempio, firmare un contratto apparentemente lucroso ma il giorno della paga, scoprire che la busta non è piena ed il datore di lavoro ha intascato la differenza in nero.  Per questo i nuovi arrivati devono conoscere i loro diritti in quel paese, che non sempre sono gli stessi dell’Italia, e anche quelle organizzazioni, a partire dai sindacati, che possono aiutarli  nel caso di sfruttamento. 

Inoltre, quelli che partono per l’estero devono capire che le cosche che tanto male fanno all’Italia, come hanno sempre fatto, non smettono le loro attività fuori dei confini nazionali italiani. Ci vuole poco per scoprire nei giornali esteri cronache di vicende e processi che coinvolgono italiani in ogni specie di attività criminale, e in questo l’Ndrangheta calabrese ha un ruolo fin troppo noto, particolarmente nel contrabbando e lo spaccio di stupefacenti in ogni luogo.  Quindi sarebbe sciocco, a dir poco, pensare che i loro capi possano esitare a sfruttare i nuovi residenti nel paese, anche connazionali. 

Sento tristezza mentre scrivo queste parole, non solo perché mi trovo a scriverle, ma perché nel corso dei molti anni di impegno all’interno di una grande comunità italiana all’estero, ho visto fin troppo spesso nostri connazionali soggetti a questi sfruttamenti. Alcuni sono riusciti a sconfiggerli, ma altri sono tornati in Italia, oppure in cerca di un altro paese, con gli occhi tristi a causa delle loro esperienze. 

Quindi riconosciamo l’esistenza ancora oggi dello sfruttamento di immigrati e cerchiamo il più possibile di combatterlo, ma per farlo dobbiamo riconoscerne l’esistenza senza nasconderci dietro i soliti luoghi comuni che spesso sono nati proprio per non far sapere questi reati ai nostri parenti e amici all’estero. 

 

The exploitation of migrants

It would be nice to think that the life of migrants, it does not matter in which country, it does not matter in what era, was just work and family and that their efforts were all rewarded in the right way but this impression, that many overseas have of the lives of their parent, grandparents and great grandparents, was rarely as clear as we would like to think and there is an aspect that all too often we avoid recognizing or talking about. But this would be wrong.  

And there is a word that describes all too well what we do not want to explicitly recognize, exploitation. 

Exploitation is an ugly word because it describes the mistreatment of men and women for reasons of money, due to prejudice or, the worst case, for reasons of crime and in this we Italians have a history of exploitation that often we avoid documenting for various reasons. This is a history that has never completely stopped.  

Who knows how many migrants hid from their children what they had to do to get and keep the job that fed their families, as well as, another detail that too many have forgotten, the money they very often sent to their families who remained at home and that often also paid for the tickets that allowed the brothers and sisters to join them in the new country. 

The effect of all this was to give the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of immigrants the impression of a “golden life” made up of hard work and good will that says nothing of the real and often bitter barriers and hardships they had to suffer, barriers that all too often were also created by other Italians. 

Due to these issues the descendants of Italian migrants since its beginning more than two hundred years ago have an approximate and “utopian” idea of the lives of their forefathers and we see this every day in the posts of their descendants when they praise their grandparents and great grandparents.  

However, we have a duty to document also these aspects of the lives of immigrants not only for historical honesty but also for a very precise and even more shameful reason. This exploitation of immigrants has never stopped, not only to our children who now leave to seek a new life overseas but the reports in Italy’s newspapers clearly show that this also happens regularly in Italy today. 

But what is this exploitation? Obviously the most common exploitation is that of bad pay for work but we would be foolish to think that it is limited only to this. Exploitation is also organized crime that “protects” other Italians from alleged other dangers. Exploitation is giving loans to immigrants at high interest rates because local banks did not want to loan them money to buy homes.  

Exploitation was also trying to look for “favours” from people with subtle threats to hurt their relatives or the fear of losing jobs if they did not accept the “requests”. And the most common form of this exploitation has an equally ugly name, sexual harassment, if not outright rape, that the women then hid, often at high personal cost, from their husbands or families.  

These are just some forms of exploitation but space does not allow us to make a full list. 

And in talking about these issues in the lives of immigrants we would also like to advise young Italians who are thinking of a possible future overseas that exploitation still exists in the world today and they would do well to keep an open mind when they take their first steps towards a new life because there are people, unfortunately even among Italians, who are not afraid to try and take advantage and exploit the new arrivals. And we do not exclude any country from this, without exception.  

We only have to read the comments of young Italians on the social media in recent years to see wonderful comments on the new life, as well as expressions of disappointment of those who had discovered that every country has people who see immigrants as prey to be used for their purposes of every kind. 

So, young Italians who go overseas to start a new life must be careful at every opportunity to ensure that the offers are real and not traps for the new employee. For example, signing a seemingly lucrative contract but on pay day to discover that the envelope is not full and that the employer has pocketed the difference under the table. This is why new arrivals must know their rights in the country, which are not always the same as in Italy, and also those organizations, starting with trade unions, that can help them in the case of exploitation. 

Furthermore, those leaving for overseas must understand that the criminal gangs that cause so much harm in Italy, as they have always done, do not stop their activities outside the country’s national borders. It takes little to find reports in overseas newspapers of incidents and trials that involve Italians in every kind of criminal activity and in this the ‘Ndrangheta of Calabria has an all too well known role, especially in the smuggling and sale of drugs in every place and it would be foolish, this is an understatement, to think that theirs leaders would hesitate to take advantage of the country’s new residents, even fellow Italians. 

I feel sad as I type these words, not only because I find myself writing them but because in the course of the many years of commitment within a great Italian community overseas I have seen all too often our fellow countrymen subjected to this exploitation. Some managed to overcome it but others returned to Italy or went to look for another country with sad eyes because of their experiences.  

So, let us recognize this exploitation of immigrants and let us try as much as possible to fight it but to do so we must recognize its existence and not hide behind the usual clichés that often arose precisely to hide these crimes towards our relatives and friends overseas.
