La Politica Vera non esiste più

La Democrazia si basa su un concetto principale senza il quale nessun democrazia moderna sarebbe funzionante: l’eguaglianza di tutti i cittadini.

 Quando i libri di Storia di questi ultimi vent’anni saranno scritti siamo sicuri che il ruolo più importante non sarà degli storici oppure dei politologi bensì dei sociologi che dovranno analizzare profondamente i cambiamenti della nostra Società moderna in tutto il mondo e non solo in Italia.

 Una delle tendenze di questi cambiamenti negativi nella nostra società è stata la perdita della politica come arte di cambiare il paese in meglio e che in molti casi è diventata succube di forze estreme e a volta occulte grazie ai social media che rendono difficile capire chi siano i veri responsabili delle ondate di bugie e false notizie che fin tropo spesso vediamo utilizzate anche dai nostri politici.

 Ovviamente le elezioni politiche si svolgono ancora ma anche le democrazie più avanzate si trovano in difficoltà perché, invece di guidare i paesi, i politici e i partiti, per paura di perdere il loro “elettorato di base”, non hanno il coraggio di presentare programmi in base a quel che sarebbero gli ideali originali dei partiti.

 Quindi il deterioramento della politica moderna ha fattori sociali e non politici causati dall’incapacità dei politici di capire che non rappresentano solo chi ha votato per loro, ma tutta la popolazione dei loro elettorati ed infine nazionali. Allo stesso modo gli elettori devono capire che il voto, oltre ad essere allo stesso tempo un diritto e un obbligo, deve essere in base al bene di tutti e non solo, come fanno molti in Italia, in base ad interessi personali e, in non pochi casi, nella speranza di un lavoro o un contratto dal candidato vincitore.

 Il risultato è che in molti casi la politica non stabilisce l’agenda di come proseguire verso il futuro ma finisce con il seguire gruppi, spesso estremisti, con ben altri programmi.

 Parola non grata

 Un esempio di questo atteggiamento di politici è una parola che, tristemente, si trova in una posizione di altissimo livello nelle cronache internazionali attuali e non solo per i tragici episodi negli Stati Uniti in questo periodo.

Tristemente le cronache in questi giorni mostrano chiaramente che questo non è il caso in molti paesi e anche la percezione di non avere gli stessi diritti di altri cittadini è un pericolo vero per la pace sociale.

 Spesso queste differenze di diritti hanno una chiara fonte, la differenza di colore della pelle, oppure la classe sociale, e in alcuni paesi anche i figli di immigrati. In teoria la lotta a queste discriminazioni dovrebbe essere apartitica, purtroppo la realtà è ben diversa.

 Queste discriminazioni dovrebbero essere descritte con una parola, razzismo, ma vista la tendenza di alcuni gruppi di rifiutare la presenza degli “altri” nei loro paesi, chiunque cerchi di utilizzare quella parola viene automaticamente etichettato come “socialista o comunista” anche se l’individuo di turno non sia di queste parti politiche.

Il risultato di questi atteggiamenti è l’aumento del numero di casi di violenza verso immigrati e altri stranieri in molti paesi in tutti i continenti, senza eccezione. Peggio ancora, per i motivi appena spiegati, molti politici esitano ad affrontare il tema e trovare soluzioni per il timore di perdere elettori invece di lottare per la parità di diritti di tutti i cittadini.

 Senza dubbio questi sono fallimenti della politica per cause sociali.

 Verità o bugie?

 Un altro fattore sociale che ha cambiato il volto della politica è la nuova tendenza di moltissimi di considerare la “libertà di espressione e/o opinione” come assoluta. Il risultato è nelle ondate di notizie false e teorie di complotti che creavano problemi già da tempo, ma dallo scoppio del virus è diventato un problema davvero serio. La libertà di espressione e/o opinione non è mai stata assoluta e basta nominare le leggi di diffamazione per capire che ha dei limiti precisi con il rischio vero di castighi penali pesanti.

 Il risultato di questa tendenza si vede ogni giorno sui social con gente che condivide filmati anonimi, spesso manipolati o addirittura fraudolenti che propongono teorie e concetti senza base, che spesso offrono cure fasulle per malattie oppure cercano di smentire studi seri e certificati da altri ricercatori.

 Tristemente è proprio stata la politica a peggiorare la situazione con politici in tutti i paesi che automaticamente condividono i filmati e post, non perché veri, ma perché tendono a screditare i loro avversari politici. Indubbiamente il caso più noto e clamoroso di questo tipo di comportamento è il Presidente Donald Trump degli Stati Uniti, ma capi politici di molti paesi, compresa l’Italia, non sono stati da meno.

 Di conseguenza per molti non esiste più la differenza tra “verità” e “bugie” e condividono post e filmati che confermano pregiudizi degli utenti invece di confermare la realtà, oppure smentire le bugie o “fake news”. E in molti casi la spiegazione è disarmante, “io ci credo, allora è vero”.

Perciò dobbiamo anche ricordare che la stampa, che ha la responsabilità di informare i cittadini, e l’informazione stessa sono al centro di qualsiasi democrazia moderna e quindi la diffusione di informazioni false non è altro che oltraggio al nostro sistema di governo che mette a rischio il nostro modo di vivere.

 Salotti

 In molti paesi i salotti televisivi hanno aggiunto un altro livello a questa miscela di bugie e complotti invitando ospiti, non per spiegare perché certe notizie sono vere o false, ma perché questi personaggi fanno “spettacolo” e quindi aumentano lo share del programma che vuol dire maggiori introiti in pubblicità per i canali televisivi.

 Per questo motivo la televisione ha fornito un palco nazionale che ha dato legittimità alle bugie e notizie false. E anche in questi casi politici di tutti i partiti hanno partecipato e i loro contributi hanno avuto un effetto importante anche nel loro ruolo istituzionale.

 Infatti, tutti questi comportamenti hanno avuto l’effetto di diminuire la fiducia delle popolazioni di molti paesi verso i loro politici. Questo già di per sé crea difficoltà per chi governa i paesi, ma ha anche un effetto che non è mai da sottovalutare.

 La sfiducia nella politica, e quindi anche verso i governi, non fa altro che incoraggiare gruppi estremisti di entrambe le parti politiche e quindi di mettere a rischio la stabilità delle democrazie e, nei casi estremi, che nel passato si sono avverati in molti paesi, compresi l’Italia e la Germania, di favorire la creazione di dittature con la scusa di “dare ordine” al paese. Il prezzo di “dare ordine” non è mai stato solo economico, ma sempre con un altissimo prezzo in sangue.

 Dunque dobbiamo porci una domanda fondamentale: questo è davvero quello che vogliamo per il nostro paese? Se no, e nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi questa sarà la risposta, allora noi tutti, cittadini e politici, dobbiamo pensare seriamente al futuro che vogliamo.

 Soluzioni?

 Quindi, dopo aver parlato dei rischi abbiamo anche l’obbligo di parlare di soluzioni e queste non sono mai semplici.

 I primi che hanno l’obbligo di rivedere il loro ruolo nella società devono essere proprio i politici che devono ricominciare a capire che la politica deve dare un futuro stabile e ricco al paese e che questo non si ottiene con eterne lotte inutili che hanno solo lo scopo di mettere individui sotto le luci della ribalta del pubblico per essere eletti di nuovo.

 I politici non possono e non devono essere quelli che diffondono le bugie, notizie false e complotti assurdi nei social. I politici dovrebbero essere quelli che stilano programmi economici e politici a lungo termine al paese, ma tristemente l’Italia non è l’unico paese dove i politici non sono capaci di guardare oltre le prossime elezioni.

 La politica vera non esisterà di nuovo fino al giorno che i politici, a partire dai segretari di partiti, non inizieranno a guardare oltre l’immediato futuro e oltre i giochini in parlamento, spesso anche all’interno dei partiti stessi, e nella stampa che non fanno niente per il paese tranne ritardare ancora di più le riforme che ogni paese deve fare per migliorare il futuro del paese e quindi dei cittadini.

 Ma la politica non può fare più di tanto se i cittadini continuano ad accettare ogni notizia falsa, ogni filmato anonimo e manipolato come verità semplicemente perché confermano i loro pregiudizi di ogni genere. Ognuno di noi vuole avere conferme delle proprie idee, ma in fondo questo è impossibile ed è ora che noi come cittadini cominciamo a capire che dobbiamo accettare che quel che vorremmo non è sempre possibile, e che a volte è anche pericoloso, come abbiamo visto in questo periodo di coronavirus con la diffusione di bufale che hanno peggiorato la situazione.

 Ma tutto questo sarà possibile solo quando tutti noi cittadini, certamente partendo dai politici, avremo un ruolo attivo nel migliorare la vita politica del paese perché per funzionare davvero la Democrazia ha bisogno non solo dei politici, ma anche della partecipazione attiva e positiva, della popolazione, a partire dal voto, ma tutto questo è impossibile con la massiccia diffusione di bufale, notizie false e complotti ridicoli.

 Ogni paese ha bisogno della politica, ma che sia politica vera e non quella che negli ultimi anni abbiamo visto in molti, anzi troppi, paesi compresa l’Italia.

True Politics no longer exists

Democracy is based on one main principle without which no modern democracy would work: equality of all the citizens.

We are sure that when the history books of the last twenty years are written the main role will not be that of historians or political scientists but rather of sociologists who will have to analyze thoroughly the changes in our modern society around the world and not only in Italy.

 One of the trends of these negative changes in our society has been the loss of politics as the art of changing the country for the better and which in many cases has become dominated by extremist and sometimes hidden forces thanks to the social media which make it hard to understand who are the people truly responsible for the flood of lies and fake news that we see used all too often, even by our politicians.

 Obviously elections are still held but even the most advanced democracies are in difficulty because, instead of leading the countries, from fear of losing their “electoral base”, politicians and the parties have not had the courage to present political programmes based on what should be the original ideals of the parties.

 Therefore the deterioration of modern politics has social and not political factors caused by the inability of politicians to understand that they do not represent only those who voted for them but all the population of their electorates and finally their countries. In the same way the electors must understand that the vote, in addition to being a right and a duty at the same time, must be based on the good of all and not only, as many do in Italy, according to personal interests and, in not a few cases, in the hope of a job or a contract from the winning candidate.

 In many cases the result is that politics does not set the agenda of how to continue into the future but ends up following groups, often extremist, with altogether different agendas.

 The unwelcome word

 One example of this attitude by politicians is a word that, sadly, is found in the very highest level of today’s international news and not only due to the tragic episodes in the United States during this period.

 Democracy is based on one main principle without which no modern democracy would work: equality of all the citizens. Sadly the press reports in this period clearly show that this is not the case in many countries and even the perception of not having the same rights as other citizens is a true danger for social peace.

Often these differences in rights have a clear source, difference in the colour of the skin or social class and, in some countries, even the children of migrants. In theory the struggle for these rights should be non-partisan, unfortunately the reality is very different.

 These discriminations should be described with one word, racism, but considering the tendency of some groups to refuse the presence of “the others”, whoever tries to use this word is automatically labelled as “socialist” or “communist”, even if the individual does not belong to these political categories.

The result of this attitude is the increase in the numbers of cases of violence towards migrants and foreigners in many countries in all the continents, without exception. Worse still, for the reasons explained above many politicians hesitate to deal with this issue and to find solutions for fear of losing voters instead of fighting for equal rights for all the citizens.

 Without a doubt these are failures of politics for social reasons.

 Truth or lies?

 Another social factor that has changed the face of politics is the new trend of many people to consider “freedom of expression and/or opinion” as absolute. The result is the waves of fake news and conspiracy theories that had already been causing problems for some time but since the outbreak of the virus has truly become a serious problem. Freedom of expression and/or opinion has never been absolute and we only have to mention defamation laws to understand that it has precise limits with the real risk of heavy criminal punishment.

 We see the result of this trend every day on the social media with people who share anonymous film clips which are often manipulated or downright fraudulent and propose baseless theories or concepts that offer bogus cures for diseases or try to deny serious and certified studies by other researchers.

 Sadly politics has worsened the situation with politicians in every country who automatically share videos and posts, not because they are real but because they tend to discredit political opponents. Undoubtedly the best known and most sensational case of this type of behaviour is President Donald Trump of the United States but political leaders of many countries, including Italy, have not behaved differently.

 Consequently, for many people there is no longer a difference between “truth” and “lies” and they share posts and videos that confirm the users’ prejudices instead of confirming reality, or to discredit lies and “fake news”. And in many cases the explanation is disarming, “I believe it, so it is true”.

Therefore we must also remember that the press, which has the responsibility to of informing the citizens, and the information itself are at the heart of any modern democracy and hence spreading false information is nothing but a violation of our system of government that puts at risk our way of life.

 Talk shows

In many countries television talk shows have added another level to this mixture of lies and conspiracies theories by inviting guests not to explain why certain news is true or false but because these people “put on a show” and therefore increase the programme’s share which means more income from advertising for the television channels.

 For this reason television has provided a national stage that has give given legitimacy to lies and fake news. And politicians of all the parties have taken part in these cases too and their contribution has had a major effect also on their institutional role.

 In fact, all these types of behaviour have had the effect of diminishing the trust of the population of many countries towards their politicians. This in itself already creates for those who govern the countries but it also has an effect that must never be underestimated.

 Mistrust of politics, and therefore also towards governments, does nothing but encourage extremist groups of both political sides and therefore endangers the stability of democracies and in extreme cases, which in the past have come true in many countries, including Italy and Germany, favours the creation of dictatorships with the excuse of “putting the country in order”. The price of “putting in order” is never only economical but always with a very high price in blood.

 Therefore we must ask ourselves a fundamental question; is this what we truly want for our country? If not, and in the vast majority of cases this will be the answer, then all of us, citizens and politicians, must seriously think about the future we want.

 Solutions?

 Thus, after having spoken about the risks we also have the obligation to talk about solutions and these are never simple.

The first ones who have an obligation to review their role in society must be precisely the politicians who must begin to understand once more that politics must give a stable and wealthy future to the country and this cannot be achieved with endless useless struggles that have the sole purpose of putting individuals under the public limelight in order to be re-elected.

 Politicians cannot and must not be those who spread lies, fake news and absurd conspiracy theories on the social media. Politicians must be the people who draw up long term economic and political programmes for the country but sadly Italy is not the only country where the politicians are unable to look beyond the next elections.

 Real politics will not exist again until the day that politicians, starting with the Secretaries of the political parties, start looking look beyond the immediate future and beyond the petty tactics in parliament, often also within the parties themselves, and in the press that do nothing for the country except delay even more the reforms that every country must carry out to improve the future of the country and its citizens.

 But politics con only do so much if the citizens continue to accept every piece of fake news, every anonymous and manipulated video as true simply because they confirm their prejudice of all kinds. Each one of us wants to have our ideas confirmed but basically this is impossible and it is time that we as citizens begin to understand that we must accept that what we want is not always possible and that sometimes it is also dangerous, as we are have seen during this period of coronavirus with the spread of hoaxes that made the situation even worse.

But this will all be possible only when all of us citizens, certainly starting with the politicians, will have an active role in improving the country’s political life because, in order to truly function, Democracy needs not only politicians but also the active and positive participation of the population, starting from the vote, and this is impossible with the massive diffusion of hoaxes, fake news and ridiculous conspiracy theories.

 Every country needs politics but it must be real politics and not the one we have seen in many, indeed too many countries in recent years, including Italy.
