Il tempo se ne va

Franca Valeri è un volto che molti italiani all’estero conoscono del cinema italiano degli anni 40, 50 e 60, ma pochi fuori l’Italia conoscono il suo lavoro come pioniera della televisione italiana fino a diventare una figura cult della nostra cultura.

Non capita ogni giorno utilizzare il titolo di una canzone di Adriano Celentano come titolo ma coincide esattamente con il pensiero che mi è venuto in mente quando ho letto male il titolo di un articolo. Il tempo davvero se ne va e, prima o poi, ognuno di noi se ne deve andare e il nostro paese sta per affrontare una serie di partenze eccellenti che segnerà la fine di due stagioni artistiche straordinarie che hanno dato gloria mondiale alla nostra Cultura.

 

Compleanno invece di…

Capita a tutti noi di leggere male una parola e mi è capitato ieri nel leggere “addio” al posto di “auguri” per una donne incredibile che ha festeggiato il suo 98° compleanno. Franca Valeri è un volto che molti italiani all’estero conoscono del cinema italiano degli anni 40, 50 e 60, ma pochi fuori l’Italia conoscono il suo lavoro come pioniera della televisione italiana fino a diventare una figura cult della nostra cultura.

Purtroppo, per gli italiani all’estero ci sono due problemi quando guardano le opere di artisti come lei, il primo è che non hanno potuto vedere la maggior parte del loro lavoro perché non è mai stato trasmesso integralmente all’estero e il secondo è che non hanno le capacità linguistiche in italiano per capire in pieno la loro bravura, a partire dalla categoria più sottovalutata all’estero, i nostri cantautori.

 

Programma d’estate

Poi, nel pensare alla carriera lunghissima della Valeri mi è venuto in mente un pensiero ricorrente di queste settimane mentre guardo un programma di grandissimo successo della RAI che, almeno per me, è uno dei programmi più belli del repertorio dell’emittente di Stato.

Come dice il nome, Techetechete   è il programma televisivo estivo della Rai che mette in mostra pezzi di programmi del passato, sia della televisione che del cinema del Bel Paese. Ogni sera tratta un tema specifico, oppure uno o due artisti.

Nel guardare questo programma da quando mi sono trasferito in Italia dal mio paese di nascita, ho visto dei pezzi che mi hanno lasciato meravigliato dalla bravura di artisti che spesso sono poco conosciuti all’estero e, in ogni caso, non al livello della loro popolarità in Italia e il contributo che hanno dato alla Cultura italiana nei loro rami.

 

Tempo

Però, quest’anno, con la concentrazione su artisti specifici, a vedere gli anni degli spezzoni di filmati ci rendiamo conto che molti di questi artisti hanno già superato la soglia degli 80 anni, oppure stanno per farlo.

Artisti come Mina, Adriano Celentano, Bobby Solo, Gianni Morandi, Monica Vitti, Tony Renis, Pippo Franco e Pippo Baudo per nominarne solo alcuni, hanno segnato la vita del paese per decenni e molti avranno difficoltà ad immaginare l’Italia senza di loro. Franca Valeri si sta avvicinando ai 100 anni ma c’è un altro personaggio che dobbiamo riconoscere e onorare ed è Piero Angela, classe del 1928, che ha dato un contributo fondamentale alla promozione di ogni forma di cultura e scienza nel paese e continua a farlo, come fa anche suo figlio Alberto.

Nel caso dei cantanti, e in modo particolare dei cantautori, il pubblico di Techtechete all’estero sarà sorpreso nel vedere e sentire grandi successi internazionali cantati in italiano, ma non ho dubbi che saranno ancora più sorpresi se e quando sapranno che l’italiano era la lingua della versione originale di moltissime di queste canzoni.

A scuola in Australia ho studiato “Tar and cement”   di Verdelle Smith per il messaggio ambientalistico, uno dei primo in assoluto, infatti era una delle mie canzoni preferite. Per questo motivo ho avuto una grandissima sorpresa anni dopo nello scoprire che questa non era altro che la versione inglese de “Il Ragazzo della via Gluck” di Adriano Celentano (in effetti la storia della sua vita) e gli anni non hanno smesso di fornire altri esempi.

 

Grande generazione di attrici e attori

Il cinema in Italia ha avuto una grande generazione di attori e attrici legati al neorealismo prima e a tanti altri registi poi. Attori come Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi e Giancarlo Giannini sono riconosciuti in tutti i continenti e hanno girato film in molti paesi. Come loro dobbiamo aggiungere attrici come Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Claudia Cardinale, Monica Vitti, Anna Magnani e Mariangela Melato.

Oltre a questi grandi attori abbiamo l’obbligo di nominarne altri altrettanti bravi come Totò, Peppino de Filippo e Gigi Proietti che, malgrado qualche successo all’estero, sono principalmente conosciuti soltanto al pubblico italiano perché i loro film di più successo non hanno mai avuto il riconoscimento internazionale che hanno meritato, spesso perché i soggetti e il linguaggio sono totalmente in italiano. Basti pensare a un film comico considerato uno dei più grandi, se non il più grande film comico italiano in assoluto,   “Amici miei” del regista Mario Monicelli che utilizza un linguaggio difficilissimo da tradurre in altra lingua a partire dall’inglese, quella del mercato internazionale più importante.

In questo momento di questa grande generazione di attori e attrici abbiamo solo Giannini e Proietti tra i maschi e delle attrici nominate la Melato e la Magnani ci hanno già lasciato e rimangono quelle attrici che per decenni sono state i simboli mondiali della bellezza italiana, Loren, Cardinale, Vitti e Lollobrigida.

 

Ricordare

Come paese abbiamo un obbligo a ricordare i nostri grandi artisti, di tutti i generi, non solo al momento della loro scomparsa ma soprattutto nel futuro così, nel senso vero, non ci lasceranno mai. Ma come dobbiamo farlo?

La risposta è assicurare di rendere le loro opere più accessibili al pubblico internazionale. Il primo passo quindi non è con i sottotitoli o nel doppiaggio, ma rendere più facile imparare la nostra lingua all’estero, partendo dai figli e i discendenti degli emigrati italiani, così che possano capire la lingua che ci definisce e finalmente apprezzare per bene il loro patrimonio culturale.

Per un italiano sarebbe una bestemmia dire che Fabrizio de André, generalmente considerato il nostro cantautore più importante, sia sconosciuto all’estero, ma è proprio così perché, per apprezzare davvero la sua musica devi per primo capire le sue parole. Possiamo dire altrettanto di altri grandi cantautori come Dalla, de Gregori, Vecchioni e molti altri perché la bellezza delle loro canzoni è nel messaggio e il linguaggio e non soltanto nelle note musicali.

Nel caso dei film, dobbiamo incoraggiare i gruppi culturali all’estero non solo a proiettare i grandi classici del nostro cinema, compresi quei film poco conosciuti, ma presentarli in modo che il pubblico alle proiezioni capisca davvero quel che succede nel film perché anche i film comici spesso hanno messaggi importanti e in questo i film di Totò sono fin troppo spesso sottovalutati.

 

Passi da compiere

Però, possibilmente il passo più importante da compiere è quello di capire che, perché un artista, cantante, attore/attrice sia celebre in Italia lo deve essere anche fuori i nostri confini. Non è affatto così. Nei casi dei cantanti italiani conosciuti all’estero, molti hanno trovato successo, il loro successo, in altri mercati e un esempio lampante è Laura Pausini.

Dobbiamo capire che il suo successo più grande non è nella nostra lingua ma è nello spagnolo dei paesi latinoamericani e per la popolazione latina degli Stati Uniti. Questo è a suo credito a livello individuale, ma non fa niente per promuovere la nostra Cultura all’estero, specialmente la nostra lingua.

Perciò dobbiamo vendere meglio i nostri prodotti culturali e come paese abbiamo una risorsa importante, gli italiani all’estero. Come paese, cosa stiamo facendo davvero per coinvolgerli?

Purtroppo la risposta è, non molto, anzi proprio poco…

Time goes by

Franca Valeri is a woman that many Italians overseas know from Italian cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s but few outside Italy know her work as a pioneer of Italian television to the point she became a cult figure for our Culture.

It does not happen very day to use a title of a song by Adriano Celentano as a headline but it coincides exactly with the thought that came to mind when I misread the headline of an article. “Il tempo se ne va” really means “Time goes by”. Sooner or later we all have to go and the country is facing a series of “departures” by excellent artists that will signal the end of two extraordinary artistic seasons that brought international glory to our Culture.

 

Happy birthday instead of…

We all misread a word and it happened to me yesterday when I read “addio” (Goodbye) instead of “auguri” (best wishes) for an incredible woman who celebrated her 98^th birthday. Franca Valeri is a woman that many Italians overseas know from Italian cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s but few outside Italy know her work as a pioneer of Italian television to the point she became a cult figure for our Culture.

Sadly for Italians overseas there are two problems when watching the work of artists such as her. The first is that they have not had the chance to see the greater part of their work because they were never transmitted in full outside Italy and the second because they do not have the linguistic capacity in Italian to fully appreciate their skill, beginning with the category that is most underestimated overseas, our singer songwriters.

 

Summer programme

Then, as I thought about Valeri’s very long career a recurring thought came to mind that struck me in these weeks as I watched a very successful programme on RAI-TV (the Italian State broadcaster) that is, at least for me, one of the best programmes of the broadcaster’s repertory.

Techetechte is a programme that RAI broadcasts in summer that puts on show clips from the past, from both Italian television and cinema. Every evening it deals with a specific theme or one or two artists.

As I watched the programme over the years since I moved to Italy from my country of birth I have seen pieces that left me amazed at the skill of artists that are often little known overseas and, in any case, not at the levels of their popularity in Italy and the contribution they gave our Culture in their fields.

 

Time

However, this year with the concentration on specific artists and seeing the years of the film clips we have understood that many of these artists have already exceeded the threshold of eighty years of age or are soon to do so.

Artists such as Mina, Adriano Celentano, Bobby Solo, Gianni Morandi, Monica Vitti, Tony Renis, Pippo Franco and Pippo Baudo to name only a few, have left their mark on the country for decades and many will find it hard to imagine Italy without them. Franca Valeri is approaching the century but there is another person that we must recognize and honour and this is Piero Angela, born in 1928, who has given an enormous contribution to the promotion of every form of the country’s Culture and science and continues to do so, as does his son Alberto.

In the case of the singers, and especially the singer songwriters, Techetechete’s international audience will be surprised to hear and see great international successes sung in Italian but I have no doubt that they will be even more surprised if and when they find out that Italian was the language of the original versions of many of these songs.

At school in Australia I studied Verdelle Smith’s “Tar and Cement” because of its environmental theme, one the first in absolute and it was one of my favourite songs. For this reason I have a huge surprise when I discovered that this was the English language version of Adriano Celentano’s “Il ragazzo della via Gluck” (The boy from via Gluck, and effectively the story of his life) and the years I have not stopped supplying other examples.

 

Great generation of actresses and actors

Italian cinema produced a great generation of actresses and actors tied first to the Neorealist films and then to many other directors. Actors such as Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi and Giancarlo Giannini are recognized in all the continents and made films in many countries. To these we must add actresses such as Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Claudia Cardinale, Monica Vitti, Anna Magnani and Mariangela Melato.

In addition to these great actors and actresses we have an obligation to name others who are just as talented such as Totò, Peppino de Filippo and Gigi Proietti who, despite some success overseas, are mainly known only to the Italian audience because their most successful films never achieved the international recognition they deserved, often because the subjects and the language were totally Italian.

We just have to think of a comedy film considered one of, if not the greatest Italian comedy of all, “Amici Miei” (My friends) by director Mario Monicelli that uses a language that is extremely difficult to translate in other languages, beginning with English, the language of the most important international market.

At the present time of this generation we have only Giannini and Proietti of the men. Of the actresses Melato and Magnani have already left us and the ones remaining are the actresses that for decades were the international symbols of Italian beauty, Loren, Cardinale, Vitti and Lollobrigida.

 

Remembering

As a country we have the obligation to remember our great artists, of all categories, not only at the time of death but especially in the future so that in a real sense they will never leave us. But what must we do?

The answer is to ensure that we make their work as accessible as possible to the international audience. The first step therefore is not with subtitles or dubbing but to make it easier to learn our language overseas, beginning with the children and descendents of Italian migrants, so that they can understand the language that defines us and finally appreciate fully their cultural heritage.

For Italians it would be shocking to say that Fabrizio de André, generally considered our greatest singer songwriter, is unknown outside the country, but this is the case because to truly appreciate his music you must first understand his words. We can say the same thing about other great singer songwriters such as Dalla, de Gregori, Vecchioni and many others because the beauty of their songs is in the message and the language and not only in the notes of their songs.

In the case of films we must encourage cultural groups around the world to not only screen our cinema’s great classics, including little known films, but also present them in a manner that the audience at the screenings truly understands what happens in the films because even comedy films often have important messages and in this Totò’s films are all too often underestimated.

 

Steps to take

However, possibly the most important step to take is to understand that because an artist, singer, actor/actress is famous in Italy means that they are also famous overseas. It is not at all like this. In the case of Italian singers who are known overseas many found success in other markets and a striking example is Laura Pausini.

We must understand that her greatest success is not in our language but in the Spanish of the Latin American countries and the Latin population of the United States. This is to her credit as an individual but does nothing to promote our Culture overseas, especially our language.

Therefore we must sell our cultural products better overseas and as a country we have an important resource, the Italians overseas. As a country what are we really doing to involve them?

Sadly the answer is not much, not much at all…
