The great Argentinean legend: migration

di emigrazione e di matrimoni

di Paolo Bonanni Cinarelli

This legend is testified by the investigation carried out by the Taquion agency in April. An average of six in ten Argentineans would be willing to leave their country. The wall rises to between 8 and 9 individuals if we consider the youngest group in the society.

85% of Argentineans younger than 25 personally feel the lack of concrete prospects for their future, their vision is one of worry, fear or lack of trust. Only 6% would ask for a bank loan. Access to the world of work or to the opportunity for professional development, as well as the danger posed by petty crime is a constant worry for 75% of them.

The country has not registered sustainable economic growth, that is for the duration of ten consecutive years, for 50 years. This leads to great social degradation such as continual growth of structural poverty and petty crime. The political context accompanies the decline in that the level of corruption and the lack of attention to public spending lead to large shortcomings in health and education policies. On Friday June 4 Covid passed the threshold of 80,000 victims and the country is the third in the world for infections per million inhabitants. The vaccination campaign has had as its main destination the top levels of the government and the militants of the party in power, ahead of pensioners, healthcare workers and teachers.

There are no reliable statistics on the Argentinean Diaspora in the world, according to 2019 statistics just over a million are permanently resident overseas. A quarter of them live in Spain, a fifth in the USA and third place is contested between Chile and Italy, a country that, on the other hand, counts Argentina as its biggest overseas community with  more than one million people registered with the AIRE (the registry of Italians resident overseas). This is a community of new-citizens, in other words, of countrymen and women not born as such but who became citizens following recognition of their blood right to citizenship, mostly in an Italian consulate. They have little or no knowledge of Italy or the language, the main objective would be to obtain a European document that would open the doors to the EU and the USA. In the absence of official data, it is estimated that more than half of the Argentineans who migrate to Europe would obtain an Italian passport or have already done so.

On the other hand, until the second post world war period Argentina was a magnet that drew European migration, especially Italians. Between 1871 and 1985 almost 3 million of our countrymen and women chose the South American country as their new home. According to the 1914 census, in a country of 8 million inhabitants, a third was made up of foreigners. In 1960, of a population of 20 million inhabitants, there were 2.6 million foreigners.
