Figli di due mondi

Ho scritto il primo dei due ultimi articoli Articolo 1: https://thedailycases.com/quegli-italiani-incivili-e-provinciali-those-ill-mannered-and-provincial-italians/ in riposta ai superficiali in Italia che si “divertono” a prendere in giro gli italiani all’estero. All’inizio pensavo solo gli italo-americani, ma ho avuto commenti da lettori che questo accade anche sulle pagine di altre comunità italiane in giro per il mondo. Nel secondo Articolo 2: https://thedailycases.com/la-lingua-che-divide-e-unisce-litaliano-the-language-that-divides-and-unites-italian/ ho voluto spiegare soprattutto ai lettori in Italia perché l’italiano parlato all’estero sia cambiato così tanto in quelle comunità, perché pochissimi in Italia si rendono conto delle realtà di queste comunità, e tra quelli che ne sanno poco includo anche i politici italiani in Italia che tanto parlano degli italiani all’estero ma ne sanno molto poco, come anche gli addetti ai lavori culturali, compreso l’insegnamento della lingua italiana in tutto il mondo, proprio per mancanza di questa consapevolezza. 

Intendevo finire con il secondo articolo, ma nel rileggerli mi sono reso conto che non poteva finire in quel modo perché manca un frase che riassume tutte queste realtà all’estero. Anzi, non solo all’estero, ma anche in Italia del 2021. 

Le realtà che tutti questi utenti superficiali, come politici e addetti ai lavori, non capiscono che gli italiani all’estero, ed in modo particolare i figli ed i discendenti dei nostri emigrati, sono figli di due mondi perché uniscono aspetti della Cultura italiana con la Cultura del paese di residenza. 

Dirò di più, man mano che passano le generazioni molti di loro non saranno più figli di solo due Culture, ma, con l’arrivo inevitabile di nuovi membri della famiglia di altre nazionalità, sono figli di due, tre e più culture, una o due dominanti, ma in ogni caso ciascuna Cultura da un contributo a formare l’identità personale dei discendenti dei nostri parenti e amici all’estero. 

Ovunque ci siano immigrati, senza eccezione, essi abitano in due mondi. Per primo nella casa dove impera la Cultura del paese d’origine, dove parlano la loro lingua e rispettano ancora le loro tradizioni, usanze e anche religioni, e fuori dalla casa abitano nel paese di residenza, le cui usanze e tradizioni culturali sono spesso in conflitto con quelle degli immigrati. 

Ogni immigrato e ogni figlio o figlia di immigrati deve trovare la proprio strada per poter convivere con queste differenze ed è questa strada che determinerà l’identità personale di ogni individuo. 

Non tutti trovano la stessa strada, non sarebbe affatto possibile. Alcuni cercano di mantenere tutte le loro usanze originali, alcuni decidono di abbandonare del tutto il loro passato per fare una vita completamente nuova e altri decidono di mettere insieme aspetti delle due e più Culture. In ogni caso, il percorso non è affatto facile e non sapremo quante lacrime gli immigrati ed i loro figli/discendenti hanno versato perché i compromessi e/o decisioni radicali hanno creato conflitto non solo tra figli e genitori, ma anche con quegli autoctoni che accettano malvolentieri i nuovi residenti nel loro paese. 

Purtroppo, e anche paradossalmente, gli interventi dei superficiali in Italia che prendono in giro gli italiani all’estero sono una faccia balorda di questo ultimo aspetto, perché la loro idea della “normalità italiana” è così limitata che qualsiasi variazione non è accettata e “gli altri” vengono derisi automaticamente senza fare la domanda più elementare: perché gli italiani all’estero sono cambiati cosi tanto nei loro nuovi paesi? 

E la risposta si riassume con la frase in cima a questo articolo, loro sono figli di due mondi. Senza dimenticare che in tutti i casi, sono discendenti di italiani e quindi i nostri parenti. Un fatto che molti superficiali rifiutano di riconoscere. 

Questo vuol dire che tutti noi dobbiamo fare molto di più per fare conoscere queste realtà non solo in Italia, ma anche tra le varie comunità perché basterebbe un controllo veloce della pagine social dedicate alla comunità italiane, per capire che ciascuna è diversa e che sappiamo pochissimo di queste differenze non solo tra paese e paese, ma anche tra città estera e città estera, ed è una mancanza grave perché ogni comunità è un’espressione nuova della Cultura italiana e quindi fa parte del nostro Patrimonio Culturale comune. 

Proprio perché non abbiamo fatto niente per capire queste differenze, non abbiamo mai riportato una vera Storia degli italiani all’estero. La RAI trasmette programmi TV per presentare la Cultura italiana al mondo, ma cosa ha fatto per fare conoscere agli italiani in Italia i veri volti, le vere esperienze delle molte generazioni di italiani all’estero in tutti i continenti? 

La risposta a queste domande è triste e desolante: poco o niente. 

Finché non avremo riempito questi vuoti di informazione delle realtà italiane all’estero non sapremo MAI come veramente promuovere la nostra Cultura nel mondo, a partire da quell’aspetto specifico che ci definisce tutti, la lingua italiana. 

E fino a quel giorno ci saranno sempre gli utenti incivili e provinciali a prenderli in giro perché sono l’espressione del sapere quasi niente della vita dei nostri emigrati in tutto il mondo. 

Se davvero vogliamo fare avvicinare l’Italia alle sue comunità estere, il passo da fare è di cominciare a capire che noi tutti dobbiamo sapere molto di più di quel che è successo all’estero ai nostri amici e parenti. Se vogliamo sapere come promuovere la nostra lingua dobbiamo incoraggiare i discendenti a volerla imparare e questo non si fa prendendo in giro su come si esprimono nella nostra lingua, oppure pensando agli italiani all’estero solo con luoghi comuni che spesso ingannano se non peggio ancora. 

L’Italia ha bisogno degli italiani all’estero, non solo perché sono i nostri parenti e amici, ma anche perché, per coloro che pensano solo in termini di economia, loro sono sempre stati una fonte enorme di guadagno per l’Italia, ma il guadagno più importante non è mai solo denaro, ma soprattutto Cultura ed in questo l’Italia come paese non ha mai fatto abbastanza. E i superficiali sui social ne sono la prova.

Children of two worlds

I wrote the first of the last two articles Article 1: https://thedailycases.com/quegli-italiani-incivili-e-provinciali-those-ill-mannered-and-provincial-italians/ in reply to the ill-mannered people in Italy who “enjoy themselves” by making fun of Italians overseas. In the beginning I thought only of the Italian Americans but I have had comments from readers that this also happens on the pages of other Italian communities around the world. In the second Article 2: https://thedailycases.com/la-lingua-che-divide-e-unisce-litaliano-the-language-that-divides-and-unites-italian/ I wanted to explain, especially to readers in Italy, why the Italian spoken overseas has changed so much in those communities because very few people in Italy realize the realities of these communities and among those who know little I include politicians in Italy who talk about the Italians overseas but they know very little, just like the experts on cultural matters, including teaching the Italian language around the world, precisely because of this lack of knowledge. 

I intended to finish with the second article but when I reread them I understood that it could not finish in that way because they lacked a phrase that summarizes all these overseas realities. Indeed, not only overseas but also in Italy in 2021. 

The reality that these ill-mannered users, politicians and experts do not understand is that the Italians overseas, and especially the children and descendants of our migrants, are children of two worlds because they embody aspects of Italian Culture with the Culture of the country of residence. 

I will say more, as the generations pass many of them will no longer be children of only two cultures but, with the inevitable arrival of new members of the family of other nationalities, they are the children of two, three and more cultures, with one or two dominating but in each case each Culture gives a contribution to shaping the personal identity of the descendants of our relatives and friends overseas. 

Wherever there are migrants, without exception, they live in two worlds. Firstly in the home where the Culture of the country of origin is in force, where they speak their language and still respect their traditions, customs and also religions, and outside the home they live in the country of residence whose customs and cultural traditions are often in conflict with those of the migrants.  

Every immigrant and every son or daughter of immigrants must find their own path to be able to live with these differences and it is this path that will determine the personal identity of each individual.  

Not all of them find the same path, it would be possible at all. Some try to keep their original customs, some decide to abandon all their past to start a completely new life and others decide to put together aspects of the two or more Cultures. In any case the path is not easy at all and we will never know how many tears the immigrants and their children/descendants shed because the compromises and/or radical decisions created conflict not only between children and parents but also with the natives who accept unwillingly the new residents in their country. 

Unfortunately and also paradoxically the interventions of the ill-mannered users in Italy who make fun of the Italians overseas are a foolish face of the latter aspect because their idea of the “Italian norm” is so limited that any variation is not accepted and “the others” are automatically derided without them asking themselves the most elementary question: why have the Italians overseas changed so much in their new countries? 

And the reply is summarized with the phrase at the head of this article, they are the children of two worlds. Without forgetting that in all the cases they are the descendants of Italians and therefore our relatives. A fact that many of those ill-mannered people refuse to recognize. 

This means that we all have to do much more to make these realities known not only in Italy but also amongst the various Italian communities because a quick check of the social media pages dedicated to the communities would be enough to understand that each one is different and that we know very little about the differences not only from country to country but even from city to city and this is a serious lack because every community is a new expression of Italian Culture and therefore part of our common Cultural Heritage. 

Precisely because we have done nothing to understand these differences we have never made a real history of the Italians overseas. RAI transmits TV programmes to present Italian Culture to the world but what has it done to make Italians in Italy aware of the real faces, the true experiences of the many generations of Italians overseas in all the continents? 

The answer to this question is a sad and bleak little or nothing. 

As long as we do not fill in these gaps of information of the Italian realities overseas we will NEVER know how to really promote our Culture to the world, starting with the specific aspect that defines us all, the Italian language. 

And until that day there will always be those ill-mannered and provincial users mocking them because they are the expression of knowing almost nothing of the lives of our migrants around the world. 

If we truly want to bring Italy closer to her communities overseas the step to take would be to begin to understand that we all must know much more about what happened to our relatives and friends overseas. If we want to know how to promote our language we must encourage the descendants to want to learn and this is not done by making fun of how they speak or to think about the Italians overseas only in terms of clichés that are often deceptive if not worse. 

Italy needs the Italians overseas, not only because they are our relatives and friends but also because, for those who think only in economic terms, they have always been a huge source of earnings for Italy but the most important income is never only in money but in terms of Culture and in this Italy as a country has never done enough. And the ill-mannered users on the social media are proof of this.
